Mom
As I announced on my television show on Thursday, my dear Mother, Big Martha, as we fondly call her, suffered a stroke. My Mom recently turned 93 and although her body was slowing her down, her mind remained sharp as a tack. She is in the hospital receiving really fine care and has been surrounded by family members and dear friends. We are all hoping for a speedy recovery so that she can get back to the life that she loves. I want to thank all of you who have sent best wishes and I will keep you informed of her progress.

Yes, she is very beautiful. I hope she gets well soon!
Kind Regards,
Stef in Seattle

Your mom is a doll and has the nicest, biggest smile! I love it when she teases you like moms will do! I will continue to pray for her to return home ASAP and hopefully she'll be back in the kitchen kneading some dough before you know it. She is an artist when it comes to that!
My fondest wishes for a speedy recovery are being sent her way. Trish

I'm so sad to hear this news of your mother. With timely care her prognosis is good, but recovery can take time. So saying, a favorite quote of mine to focus on at such a time is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Adopt the pace of nature: Her secret is patience."
Prayers for your mother and the family are lovingly sent your way.

Big Martha (which I think is so cute, b/c she's so petite) radiates a positive attitude toward life and everything she does woth it. I would only think that she would do the same with her recovery. She really is a role model for us all.

Martha,
How sorry I am to hear about your Mom. I had the pleasure of meeting your Mom at a 1995 Westport function at your house. We had a lovely conversation and talked about our Polish connection! She is a lovely, warm and beautiful person and I will remember that day for a long time. I always enjoyed your segments featuring her and would hurry and make her recipes. (her meatloaf is still our favorite!!)
Please give her our well wishes for a speedy recovery and we will keep her in our prayers. God bless you both.

Good Evening!
I’m saddened to hear that your sparky Mother is less than well.
In August, I had the pleasure of meeting her in person and was reminded of my own Mum. Good values, a strong moral compass and not hesitant to express her well considered opinions, your tough minded Mom could have succeeded in the U.S. Senate!
The amazing thing was that although she is 93, “Big M’s” mind was amazingly well exercised and truly as sharp as could be.
In fact, your mom so reminded me of the refrain of an oldie hit, “Solid as a Rock” that I looked up the lyrics. What a delight to find that it is a song of enduring love- only the most “romantic” aspects were less than suited to remarkable mothers like yours (and mine). What an anchor these extraordinary women provide.
Martha, thank you for sharing your mother with us. May we appreciate and honor all devoted Mothers, as thoroughly as you have honored yours. These great women stand by us and by our children, through thick and thin, inspiring us to our very best. Let us, in honor of Big Martha “arise and call (our Mothers) blessed.”

Dear Martha and "Big" Martha
your mother is a wonderful person, so glad that she is "with it" at 93!! My heart goes out to you and my prayers to your mom for a speedy recovery! I know what it is like to have your mom in the hospital, my mom was 96 when she was hospitalized, and the trauma was too much for her. Her dementia really took over after that, but we were fortunate enough to celebrate her 97th birthday with her before she passed. Martha, as so many others have, I've enjoyed watching your mom AND you over the years. She's just precious, and I add my love and well-wishes for a speedy recovery. Sadly, Houston does not carry your program, so I'm very glad to have this site where I can keep up with you and your family. Please, give your sweet mom a gentle hug from all of us who love her!

Martha,
I, too, have a Polish (and Czech) family heritage, and learned baking and cooking from my Mom and Grandmas. Having now lost them, my Mom most recently, I cherish the precious memories and wonderful recipes and traditions they have blessed me with. I, now, am passing these treasures on to my daughters, so that the family traditions and memories may live on.
Mom and I would watch your show - sometimes together, sometimes in different towns (and then discuss it over the phone!) and really enjoyed when Big Martha joined you in the kitchen, making her special Polish recipes, and, of course, teaching us to scrape that bowl clean!
Mothers and Daughters and Grandmothers and Granddaughters...such treasures, such precious memories.

Martha,
One of my very favorite shows of yours was when your mother was baking with you and your niece Sophie. When Sophie attempted to roll out the dough she had nothing but trouble. The two of you were giggling like little girls. It was so sweet. Your mother patiently showed her how to do it again just like it was the easiest thing in the world to do. On the next try it seems Sophie found out practice makes perfect.
I shall have positive thoughts for your mother and keep her in my prayers.

I love every single show that included your Mom. Not that I don't enjoy the others as well, but the ones featuring the special relationship the two of you shared always warms my heart.
I have always admired your determination and drive. When asked on a university application who my role model was. I mentioned my mother, for the example she set for my sister and I as a single parent determined to make a better life for herself and her children. I also include you for your dedication to the extraordinary. The concept that if it is worth doing, it's worth doing well, and doing it well is worth the effort.
Your Mom was your inspiration and taught you so much of what you know, and you have chosen to share some of that knowledge with so many others. As a result, your Mom's legacy will live on as we teach future generations. I hope you can find a bit of comfort in that in this difficult time.
All the Best,

My thoughts are with you today as I learned of the passing of your mother. I lost my mother 32 years ago at the age of 39. I have lived my whole adult life without her and it never gets easy. Hi Martha, Last Wednesday, Nov. 14th, my two daughters and I were at the Japan Society for your lecture which we all enjoyed immendsely. I was going to ask a question which has had no answer for many years now, but the timing didn't seem appropriate. I have been looking for a Turkey Oak, Quercus Cerris, for such a long time and have had no luck in finding it. I seem to remember that you had one, perhaps at Turkey Hill? I've seen it at the NY Botanical Gardens but no info as to a source. We are zone 5 but pretty well protected - Poughkeepsie, NY - so I think it would do okay. Any help would certainly be appreciated.
I just read about your mother and my condolences go out to you and your family. My mother, being Polish, enjoyed watching her on your show as many of the dishes she prepared were very familiar to her. She'll be 89 next month and still "keeps on ticking" (and still drives her friends around. With sympathy Carol

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your mother. I loved to watch you two interact on tv! It's so wonderful that you were fortunate to be close to your mom as an adult. How proud of you she was!
Her pride showed through everytime she joined you on camera, Martha. I've also lost both of my parents and I can tell you this: Not a single day will go by when you don't miss them. The emptiness will eventually fade from a sharp pain to an ever-present dull ache. Holidays are always the toughest...but you know what? Our parents would not be happy if they knew we were moping, and miserable for missing them. We must celebrate the live they led, and the life they made for us, in everything we do from this day forward.
Bless you and your family, Martha.

Dear Martha and family,
I am so very sorry to have learned of your dear, sweet Mom's, "Big Martha", passing. I did not learn of this until your show this morning, and I am heartbroken for you and your family. Along with millions of others, I enjoyed her for many years when she appeared on your shows. She is a love! I lost my Dad (and three siblings) within the past several years), so I have an idea of what you and your family might be going through. Please hold on tight to each other and all the wonderful love and memories you have of your Mom. What a terrible loss. So many of us (your/her fans) out here will share in that loss. How wonderful, though, that she had such a good and healthy life for 93 years! God blessed her and all of her family with so many good and wonderful years. I pray that we can have our Mom for a healthy time to come. My thoughts and prayers, together with those of my family, are with you and your family. When you give Thanks on Thanksgiving Day, I am certain you will thank God for all the wonderful, happy, and healthy years your Mom had and could share with generations of her family. You are amazing, and I love you. I hope someday to have the opportunity to meet you. God Bless you and your family. There is no doubt that God Blessed your Mom, "Big Martha". May she rest in peace. Dearest Martha,
You are so many things to me; I am
so endeared to you for so many reasons. I want to extend my deepest sorrow at the passing of your lovely mother. Big Martha reminds me so of my own Mother (little Doris!) who I called "The
Douchess". Three years ago, Mother was here in my home for Thanksgiving. She suffered a cerebral hemmorage just three days
later. As each Thanksgiving has
subsequently passed, I've missed her in ways I would not not have
ever thought possible. Thanksgiving has become such a mingling of sadness and joy; in total, I'd have to say this holiday is the sweetest of all. I
have felt that your Mother and the
Douchess would have been the very
best of friends. Mom tried to teach me so much of what Big Martha gave to you....home, family, cooking, all the "good things" about entertaining, gardening, and on and on! I know
you'll miss her as a "constant" and "rock" in your life - it just
becomes habitual in a way nothing
else ever has been. My Mom was gusty and independant too.
When Mom first had her stroke,
she had surgery - I stayed with her all but two full days until
January 22nd (she was born April 22nd, 1920). When she finally realized that she would never be the zesty little size 4 shushing down a snowy mountain, etc., she
finally gave in. I held her in my arms until the warmth in her
tiny little self took a very warm
and differently mature place in my
heart.
My blessing was to take on the
tast of switching the mother-child
relationship with her- a privileg I will cherish forever as aruly "good thing". On the
other side, Big Martha lived so much longer and her passing was quite fast. This, too, you will
cherish forever as a truly "good thing."
You will remain in my thoughts;
thank you for all the wonderful things you give all of us each day.
Thanksgiving Day takes on a whole new meaning....

Dear Martha,
Good mothers are such important role models for their children. They teach us so much and expect nothing in return.
Your mother was the epitome of a good mother--a sensitive and caring person who bestowed upon you and your siblings respect for other human beings and most of all, good family values.
I will miss your mother terribly because she was such a delightful lady. I have always loved when you cooked and kibitzed together.
Thank you for all the wonderful memories, being so good to your mom, sharing her with us and for always honoring her.
Many blessings,

Dear Martha & Family,
I love watching the shows with you and Big Martha cooking together. It reminds me of the times my Mom taught me how to make the special recipes handed down from her Mom my dear Grandmother. It took a lot of practice and patience just like the two of you.
I was shock to hear that she passed away when I was watching your show this morning.
My prayers go out to all her children and especially her grandchildren. I know how much all of you will miss her so much.
God has a special angel and she is cooking for everyone!
God Bless You & Your Family,

Martha,
I was so saddened to hear of your Mother's passing on this morning's show...I had seen the show last Thursday when you mentioned how ill she was. You, along with your mother, have gifted the world with simple, do-able recipes, crafts, gardening tips, etc. that were enjoyable to try. She was truly an angel to all she came in contact with, and, I don't have to tell you and your family, she touched many, many lives outside of her family. It was heart-warming to see the pictures of her on your TV show this morning. My love, prayers, and sympathy go with you now...May your memories stay alive forever. With gentle thoughts and Love, L. I am so saddened by the death of "Big Martha". She reminded me so much of my Polish Grandma, even favored each other!! AND the food y'all made together was like me being back in Grandma's kitchen in N.J. I make lots of the old polish dishes myself, but nothing that could ever equal my Grandma.
God bless you and all your family.

Just a note to thank you for making the tribute to your mom available. I (66) am caring for my disabled sister (62) and miss a lot of current events. Your mom's passing is one that really touched me as I remember so many of her visits with you. She reminded me of my mom who was the most wonderful, giving woman and ALSO VERY MUCH IN CONTROL! I loved Big Martha and enjoyed it each time she appeared with you on tv, with a favorite being the dough lesson with your neice.
I just watched the tribute and wept at the loss but more with the privilege of joining in with you and Big Martha for the lessons and fun!
With fond memories, Carol

Dear Martha,I read once that we have the privelidge of smoothing our loved ones' way to Heaven. I certainly saw the smiles of Big Martha whenever she appeared with you. She was a sparkling gem. Our minister said at a family funeral, "Just let us love on you awhile." Thank you for sharing the tribute. God's love and our prayers to you and your family.

My mother will turn 91 in April....she watches your show daily, and often mentions that your mom used to be on the show and how much she enjoyed those episodes.
We were able to get tickets for your show about a year and a half ago, and your staff treated my mother royally...a tribute to you and your staff; they know how to make people feel welcomed. The staff learned from you, and you learned from you mom. Good job, Mrs. Kostyra.
One last item....Your mother's Mushroom soup is now a staple at our holiday table. On a recent vacation to Poland, my mother's request as we were leaving was that we not forget to get the Polish mushrooms for "Martha's Mother's Soup". You and your mom will always be remembered on holidays at our home. God Bless You.

i am so saddened by the news of your mother. i watch your show everyday but i must have missed the tribute show for some reason or other. i cherish you and your mother and hold the both of you in the highest of regards. please know that you and your family will be in my thoughts and my prayers as you deal with the loss of a fantastic woman that touch so many lives. just reading the other posts it seems like your mom passed close to my birthday which was november 14th. from now on every year on my birthday i will stop for a moment and think of your mother and the kindness and fondness and love she envoked to so many. your mom was in a class of her own. my favorite show with your mom would be the one where u, your mom and sophie along with your nephew were taping your mom making the family traditional christmas cookies so the grandchildren will have a record of how to make the cookies. i am sure you have many tapes like these that you all will treasure forever. take care and God bless to you all!

Many have lost loved ones in this world and what conforted me a great deal was something a person told me.It was this, Love doesn't die. The love they had for you in this life goes on and lives inside each of us that they had for us. So I used this information during my grief times I would remember all those special times and love we shared. It helped and I know that you and your family have your special memories of your mom to keep her close to you forever. She was a bright light in this world and I loved her sense of humor and repore she had on your shows.
Thank you for the gift of sharing to us all you and you mom gave to all of us her in the TV world.

I'm a little late reaching your new blog. I've been ill myself lately and haven't kept up with what has occurred. My heart just goes out to you in the loss of Big Martha (Mom to many Martha Stewart fans for many years, myself included).
What a brilliant lady and thankfully sharp and very functional to nearly the end! Remarkable and joyous! She'll be looking down and keeping a watchful eye over her children and grandchildren.
In closing, I know that you will miss her dearly at Christmas and the shock of this great loss has not settled in yet. Please know that your caring fans will be here for you in the months and years to come.
Please continue to do what you do best--teach and create as your MOM did!

Dear Martha,
I didn't know your sweet Mother passed away, till recently. I am so sorry for your loss. My Mother was also 93yrs old and passed away this Sept 25 after breaking her hip. I was fortunate to live close and help take care of her so she could keep living alone.
She and I often watched your show together. She loved you because you are a strong women and still take pride in taking care of your home. She was also very strong, full of wit, and extremely particular in how we "did" things. When ever we saw your Mother on your show (those were her favorites), Mom could relate. Mother was also a good cook. She even had her own resturant in the 40's. (She bought live chickens killed, feathered and butchered them herself before frying them). I've watched your pride, respect and love for Big Martha through the years, and along with your grief at losing a big part of you, I understand.
God give you peace.
Sincerely,
Janice in Breese Illinois

Dear Martha,
I am so sorry that your Mother has passed. I enjoyed her so very much on your show. I love when you show spots from your old show.
I wish too that you would consider creating a cookbook perhaps with the proceeds benefiting her favorite charities!
I appreciate all that you do. You are a wonderful teacher to all of us. It is a great gift to be able to learn something new each time we can watch your show.
Be blessed!

When you did the tribute to your mother this last week, it was wonderful. How blessed you are to have so many wonderful memories and on "film" to pass down for generations to come.

Anyway, I am an at-home-mom & have always found strength & incouragement for the past 20 years from you through all your different media facets. After viewing your photos while visiting the Super Bowl, you have once again encouraged me to TAKE MORE PICTURES! All the litle things that we will surely forget, such as the roof on top of the stadium in Arizona and the way your close friends look so at peace, happy & just enjoying life...not all "dolled" up for a photo shoot, if you know what I mean! I so admire you & wish you continued success !

Dear Martha: I cannot watch daytime TV as much as I used to and therefore, did not learn of your Mom and Paw Paw's passing until today, Friday 5/9/08. I was so saddened to learn of their passing. I enjoyed your mom so very much each time she appeared on your show. She had so much "zip"; and I loved when she'd "zing" you. Really funny! Even tho' you may have been sightly irked at the time.
But it appeared you had a wonderful relationship with your mom which is something you will cherish your entire life.
I will miss seeing this lovely lady on your show and am truly hoping you will show nice, long clips of your segments together very often. I would have loved to see your tribute-to-your-mom show and hope it will air again. If it will be shown again, please announce it several times in advance for those of us who can't get to see your show as often as we'd like.
My sincerest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of the great lady: Martha Kostyra. My prayers are with you.
Angela C.
