Hi Martha!
I loved your photos of the Marc Jacobs fashion show. I'm a freelance scenic artist from NH and I've had the pleasure (and stress) of working on the set for Marc's shows for the last 4 years. It was a thrill to actually attend the event I had helped to "scenic", but I couldn't help but think about the tremendous effort it takes to pull off a show like that, and how most spectators are oblivious about it. No one knows better than you, I suppose, about behind-the scenes orchestration. Year before last, Marc's set designer, Stefan Beckman, called for white-washed planking for the ramp. During the run-through with the models, a few of the boards were punched through from the stiletto heels of the models. So there I was-on my knees on the ramp a few hours before the show-doing the repairs by painting faux knots in the wood! Then I rushed to buy an outfit,(I'd only brought paint clothes to the city) change out of splattered work duds for the performance. WHEW! The show must go on!

I adored many of Marc's latest fashions. The wild colors and avant garde styles were theatrical and so fun! When I was younger, I would have been lithe- and bold enough to wear maybe a few of them! Adorable hats! Did you see those pencil thin heels? How did they manage to balance and walk at the same time?
People tend to forget that the haute couture runways shows are more of an expression of an 'art form' to be appreciated versus offering up design ideas for practical fashion. It is the excitement, the drama, the presentation, all intended to stimulate interest in the latest trends and interest toward the designer himself. I was shocked to discover how very few customers actually purchase the featured runway fashions. Most of the designer's business sales are in no way as cutting edge as what is seen on the runway. Thanks for giving us a chance to attend with you, Martha!

Beautiful, gorgeous and wonderful. Here overseas we, as usual, share Martha's opinion!
By the way, have you also looked at Peter Som's collection. If not, please check out a picture on p.10 of the Herald Tribune of Wednesday, September 10. - Very different -
Check him out, I'd say, and Martha... take out that camera!
Greetings from Europe,
Luc Raes

I agree w/ DavidK, Marc's skirt is the best one there. I've never understood why designers seem to create stuff that they would never wear themselves (or someone they respect).
Sometimes I get the feeling that the designers are somehow ridiculing the women who buy/wear their stuff. I am in no way saying Marc J is doing that. He does in fact have some attractive stuff in this line. I do also understand that a fashion show is A SHOW-- but sometimes....... I wonder.
I do like a fashion show when you see a whole line of a designer's collection - you get a good sense of the style and how it can be translated, different materials, combinations. It's a good education.

I think Marc Jacobs clothing is beautiful but I must say I'm quite a "country" girl and I would find no where to wear those items. Possibly the short suit. Hope you had a good time and rested up in Mexico - we're waiting with anticipation for the new season...Thanks - We love ya' N
