Citymeals on Wheels Power Lunch for Women
On Friday, I attended the Citymeals-on-Wheels 22nd Annual Power Lunch for Women held at the beautiful Rainbow Room in New York City. This event was especially thrilling for me because I was honored for my contributions to geriatric care. My friend Lynda Resnick, of Roll International, was also recognized for her leadership in corporate philanthropy. This luncheon is really just a sea of fabulous women and some men who are there to give support to the most wonderful Citymeals-on-Wheels.
Founded in 1981 by Gael Green, the restaurant critic, the mission of Citymeals-on-Wheels is to make sure that no homebound elderly New Yorker will ever go a day without nutritious food or human company. Meals are prepared using public donations and are delivered by volunteers. To date, more than 40 million meals have been delivered to those in need. And at Monday’s lunch, more than 1.5 million dollars was raised, exceeding Citymeals-on-Wheels expectations! I applaud all who are involved. ÂÂ

In Canada we have a similar program called "Meals on Wheels". It is truly a wonderful organization and it's nice to see your pictures about this.
You lead such a busy life these days!

Good Morning Martha:
What a wonderful organization, Citymeals and the companionship given to the elderly. 40 million meals, Wow!
Oh my Gosh! You had the fortune of meeting Kathleen Turner, she is my favorite actress. I was just wondering? Will Kathleen ever be a guest on your Martha Stewart Show?

I think it's wonderful that NYC has such a program in it's large city! In coming from a smaller town, I have (ignorantly) viewed larger cities as being impersonal with the mind-set of survival of the fittest. My heart was warmed yesterday, watching this segment of your show, and learning of the feelings of responsibility that some have taken to initiate and perpetuate this valuable program. May God bless them! The dear gentleman shown yesterday who was 90+, who made his daily pilgrimage (down four flights of stairs, or so [with his cane!]) for his newspaper - my heart just ached for him, as he not only wanted a daily meal, but human companionship, too...bless his dear heart!
We ALL have too much! We're considered rich (in retrospect to the whole world) if we have a roof over our heads, with some spare change laying around unaccounted for. It IS better to give than receive, and if we all gave just a teeny-tiny bit of ourselves (some spare change in that red kettle this Christmas, clothes we no longer wear, etc), what would it hurt?!!
My heart fills up, Martha, when I see your philanthropic endeavors that have come to fruition. May the Lord richly bless you as well for your generosity!

You and Gloria look like sisters! I guess you *are* sisters in the sorority of accomplished, contributing women---giving back to the community.

What a great role model you are. I applaud your sincerity in giving back to the community and helping those in need, especially the elderly. Keep up the good work.

Looks like a terrific event for a great cause. What a wonderful thing it is to do for other people. Perhaps you'd like to see how us women much less famous spend a similar amount of time together? I'll with a group of equally terrific women the weekend of Dec 6-7 at a Girl Scout camp outside of St. Louis, running an event for them to thank them and recognize them for all their volunteer efforts to provide leadership skills for girls who I hope someday will be doing just what you and others at your event are doing!! We will be on a shoestring budget and not dressed as nicely since we'll be at camp, but it will be fun.
Thanks again for sharing all of the variety of posts on your blog. I usually never comment, but I do enjoy catching up on all the events and everyday happenings going on in Martha Land!

Congratulations to you for being honored for your contribution to geriatric care and I also just read that you will soon be inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame. How great is that! I am so proud to be one of your followers! Trish
