A beauty tip from Mary, my makeup artist
I asked my hair and makeup artist, Mary Curren, if she might share some of her beauty tips and here’s one that works really well for me.
Mary’s seasonal tip:
Heading into the winter season and still maintaining a nice healthy glow of the skin can be a challenge for many. Using the right bronzer or tinted moisturizers can really aid in getting the look you desire. There are so many good products on the market that can help you obtain the sun-kissed look without the damage of ultra-violet rays. For Martha's complexion, we have been using the Stila Sheer Color tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 15. After applying that, we reach for MAC Matte Bronze Bronzing Powder for an added “pop†of color. You’ll find that applying the bronzer as a light contour onto the cheekbones and then under the jaw line, blending downward on the neck, can really enhance your look during the long months of winter.

please share what brand and shade is the eyeshadow compact in photo number 9.

Hi, Martha,
Thanks for the introduction to your hair and makeup artist Mary Curren.
Thanks, too, to Mary for all the tips.

It's nice to see some of the people behind the scenes too.
I see that some of the MAC cosmetics are used. I swear by their lip gloss. Best on the market and in the cold climate where I am from (Canadian prairies where it is minus 31 right at this moment!),it is put to the test daily.
Hope all my fellow bloggers had a nice New Years eve as well...

Great tips. Thank you! I love hearing how things are done and it's always fun to see that it doesn't take much to look good, just a little fore thought and planning. Great job Mary, Martha always looks fabulous.

Dearest Martha,
This response is not necessarily about make-up, although I do wear it when necessary, otherwise, I use the old eye shadows and things to paint/make cards with...like I saw on your show once...and speaking of 'show'; yesterday's blog re-run was intruded upon (in my viewing area) by a hockey game! Hoping you will re-run the re-run and 'make-up' for the hockey puck!
Thanks for all the shady tips, though;)

I use MAC lipstick. They recycle -- when you take 3 empty lipstick containers back to them, you get a free lipstick.

I rely on Oil Of Olay every day. My grandmother used it everyday and I have since used it since I was 14, when I heard about it when I had to cleaned her little apartment. Expense products are not the answer; trust me. My best asset is my smooth skin and everybody now in my family is hooked.

I am a huge fan of MAC...especially their lipstick. Martha always has such a fresh looking face. As i am now in my early 60's it would be interesting if a segment of Martha's show could show ways to enhance the eye area for those of us who are a little older. I hate to see harsh eye makeup on anyone and certainly not on the older generation.

I adore MAC and use some of their products. But trust me, a bronzer would make me look like I was auditioning for Cats.

MAC is a wonderful Canadian brand of make-up that has really taken the world by storm. I still have the first catalogs released by the company in the early 90s: astounding photography with such creative and theatrical make-up designs! I'm glad you use MAC!

what exactly is included in her travel kit?

I could use a new lipstick and powder to revive my look. I am sporting hair this winter that looks just like an acrylic clown wig! I am afraid I am scaring little children.

A tinted moisturizer and Mac? Wouldn't have guessed that either would be recommended for anyone under the age of 25-30.(You clearly can look great with any products!) There are just so many fantastic lines available with ingredients that contain healing and restorative benefits. Wondering what Mary recommends for you now for skin care, i.e. cleansers & moisturizers?

Great make-up tip. Mary has a fresh and pretty look and she does a fabulous job keeping you looking fresh. I am glad that she doesn't pack on the strong colors on your face.
Martha, I love watching Liesl's wedding. It was on t.v. a couple of nights ago and I watched it for the third time...this time with my husband. Liesl is so beautiful and her hubby is sweet.
Happy 2009!

Thank you so much for sharing this tip with us! I'm going to try both these products. Your skin always looks so luminous. I'm 40 years old, and what I did makeup-wise in my *thirties* is no longer working for me. I don't know how to fix that. YouTube has many videos with teen & twenty-somethings giving makeup tips that don't apply to what I need at my age.
I would dearly love to know what to do for very dark under eye circles (dark enough that they're commented on often), fine lines, crepiness & how to make eye makeup look better now that I'm older. Maybe a makeup line for those 40 & up, & how-tos should be your next business venture, Martha!

Comments and sharing is great ...I have to share this one with my mom. She helps me so much with my business and never spends enough time for herself. This one will have to be a treat for her from myself. Thanks Martha for sharing. May you always be blessed - you are a wonderful person. Rhonda
Drop by and blog sometime. Always sewing and making something. My kids call me Martha junior. (smiling)

Hi Martha, Thanks again for another informative and fascinating blog. I have never been one to use makeup, but I still find it fascinating to see what others, especially you, use to continue to look so beautiful. You are so lucky to have professionals like Mary Curren and Eva Scrivo as your makeup artists. They always do a beautiful job, but then, you don't need a lot of makeup to bring out your natural beauty. Hope you are having a great New Year. Jan

Martha,
Can you recommend a good skin care moisturizer for face and hands for the winter? I am swimming at my gym nearly every day and I really need a recommendation. This tip from Mary is very helpful. Thank you. Winter in New England is very challenging on the facial skin. Any tips are most appreciated.

I will try the Stila moisturizer...but any other additional recommendations for harsh climates and preparing the face for it everyday would be great.

I love the Bobbie Brown bronzers. I find that they are very natural looking. She often pairs them with a beautiful pink blush... mine is called peony!

Martha, my mother of 81yrs and I watch you everyday from here (a little north of Syracuse NY) where it's very cold brrrrrr. We noticed that Eva Scrivo is missing lately and wonder if she will be back on soon. But a side note: you have been looking so much better. You are a beautiful woman with lovely skin, however lately the colors are wonderful and you are looking even more lovely. I like this color combo. Keep using whatever this artist has come up with. She's very in-tune with making you glow with youth!
Happy New Year

Happy New Year, Martha.
I've just completed viewing your family photo gallery, and was intrigued by what I saw. I've often wondered where you came from.
Looking into the windows of your mother's soul...which, of course, photos do little justice to...they seem to hold many stories beyond what meets the eye. I would venture to say, she was some woman.
I became interested in my own 'family dynamics' since the year 2000...never before realizing just how important one's background is in understanding certain behaviors...however uncommon they may be. I believe one's mentality can 'grow' well beyond the worse of family dynamics. Mine certainly have. I've always been eager to learn more through various associations, and mediums of communication. I learn much from you.
In all of what you may have personally inherited from the dynamics of your family...what I see (in you) is the 'creme de la creme'.
You're a genius, Martha. You're also beautiful, and extremely talented. You're the 'Real McCoy'; and, I love how you appreciate the same in those you associate with, and have as guests on your show.
You're a great teacher; and, thanks for your continued mentorship.

What ever happened to Eva Scrivo? Your current stylists and makeup people are fine but we are curious about why Eva is never on anymore, we so enjoyed her segments on your show.

For those of you who are wondering..... it looks like to me like Mary's travel kit contains:
MAC powder
MAC bronzer
MAC blush
Bobbi Brown eyeshadow palette
Shu Uemura lipstick
MAC lipliner
Lancome foundation
These products must work for Mary and Martha, 'cause Martha looks AMAZING! Of course, she'd probably look great without them too.... but what a team!

I was wondering who was responsible for Martha's fabulous look lateley!! Mary does a FANTASTIC job at keeping you looking your ultimate best, Marta! She's a keeper!!!

I loved Mary's beauty tip, thanks for sharing it, Martha. I have admired your hairstyle for quite some time, and being a hairstylist myself, wondered if Mary could share your cut design lines, and perhaps the styling techniques she uses to get your fabulous style!
For example, does she use a curling iron, rollers, or blow dry styling only? And what does she do to style those beautiful bangs of yours? I love your show and have learned so much from you through T.V., the magazines, your cookbooks and this great website. Thank you!
