Martha,

If you are ever in Portland, Oregon in the summer or early fall, you MUST go to the International Rose Test Garden. Portland is called the Rose City for a reason. Roses flourish for months here in the Pacific Northwest. I was so surprised after moving from New England to see roses blooming into late September and October. The test garden is probably at its best in early to mid August, when the largest variety of roses are in bloom. This is where new hybrids are tested before recognition, and there are a huge range of old standards and lesser-known hybrids, with new ones added each year. The smell of the roses is wonderful, and the views of the city from the park are very pretty.

Portland also happens to be a foodie heaven - I'd love to see an episode of your show feature some of the city's great independent food and drink producers, farmers markets and restaurants.

For a moment, I'm sure I could smell those through the computer. Maybe it was the laundry. I really like that little pink and green rose, and I just swore today that I wasn't going to buy any more plants, as my son and I repotted three roses that I can't find room for in the yard, and took up the poor bearded irises that have been hanging in there year after year without getting enough sun.
I have a David Austin rose called "Ellen" that is perhaps my favorite color, a pale pink-orange. It is an English-type rose with that crumpled Kleenex look in the center. This rose is a rampant grower for me in Los Angeles, sending long canes out like a fountain and I would put it on an arbor except that it would shade the last real sunny spot in my yard. As well, my daughter's name is Ellen Rose. All rather accidental. I believe that if one's daughter has the middle name of Rose they most likely can find a rose with her first name to plant. Alas, my daughter is not much impressed and doesn't really care for her middle name.

The roses are absolutely beautiful! Now I really can't wait for spring to come:) Also, that's the first time I ever saw a "flat" rose.

Martha sounded like you have a cold on today's show or getting one better bundle up really good tomorrow.
I bet the businesses who sale "outhouses" will make a bundle tomorrow, I couldn't resist!

I envision you with two cameras clicking constantly and you won't know which way to turn fast enough.

Have fun but be careful out there in that mega crowd.

P.S It's 79 here today wonderful!

Oh wow! Roses are just the... most... beau.ti.ful flowers of all!
Thanks for letting us see them, even here if far-flung Egypt. We do get some roses in the tiny flower stalls but not many.
My faves are the deep yellows and corals and the blue one called "Blue Moon"... gorgeous!
Have a great week Martha.
Love
