Beds & Borders, Inc.
Beds & Borders, Inc. is another excellent wholesale grower of specialty plants located on the very beautiful North Fork of Long Island. Beds & Borders was founded in 1987 by the late Kathryn Pufahl, who began growing unusual plants previously unavailable to the wholesale trade in one small plastic greenhouse. Since that time, the business has grown tremendously to 90,000 square feet of growing space in a computer controlled production facility. Their specialty are annuals and tender perennials, which can be found in garden centers from Vermont to Maryland and are used extensively by the industry's best garden design professionals. Andrea and I found a wonderful selection there.

3 The colors and varieties are astounding!
4 These are Korean Mums, which they grow for New York City's Central Park.

6 Violet hederacea - Tasmanian Violet - The violet-purple flowers are tipped with white and accented with a little, bird-like orange 'beak.'
7 I just love how all of these plants look together. The colors and textures really complement.
8 Someone has a lot of watering to do here!
9 Here I am discussing how I use this plant with Heather - staff at Beds & Borders.
10 This looks like an impressionist painting.
11 I'm always impressed with the inventory here.

13 Beautiful succulents - Andrea agreed that a TV segment on growing succulents would be great.

Hi Martha, The North Fork of Long Island is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen and Beds and Borders is an exceptionally spectacular place worth visiting time and again. Oh, how I wish I lived close enough to be there often. Maybe someday.... These photos are absolutely fantastic. I just love the fact that we can enlarge each photo to see all of the details. By doing so, it feels like I'm right there and can reach out and touch the plants or smell the blossoms. Beautiful!!! Jan

Martha, you are too cool, take a tour riding in golf carts of many nurseries, look at plants, step over plants, pick up plants eat lunch AND not a stain on your white pants nor a sticker in your foot.

The plants at Beds & Borders, Inc are really beautiful and no doubt Zack and Heather have a lot to do with keeping them in tiptop shape. That’s an excellent crop of pansies and I really like the chicks & hens, but most of all the Tasmania violet. It has such beautiful leaves and I zoomed in and saw the orange beak too. Pretty neat - thanks for the tour Martha. I bought some perennials over the weekend which I need to get into the ground today and I also bought some beautiful ferns.
I look forward to when your show starts on September 14 so we can see which plants you and Andrea selected. Trish

Wholesale, not open to the public, right?
I was inspired by the above photos to look at their online Spring 2009 catalogue and it is so pretty and informative. An apparently nice and very accomplished family, I wasn't aware of them before. There is always something important to learn if you dig a little deeper. Best wishes to them.
Succulents! They pop up everywhere here and it's hard to keep them corralled. One man's weed is another's tender perennial. I did think it funny to see the weeds in the sedum. Just a little bit of "Amish imperfection" in a very tidy operation.

Wow Martha!
Beds and Borders have an account with NYC? That's nice. You still in that hot, black shirt? Yes, I see everyone is color coordinated! Good Lord! We won't find you stuck in a box of crayons, now will we! Ha!
