Behind the scenes of the Today Show
Yesterday, on the Today Show, my daughter, Alexis joined me for a cooking demonstration. As you may know, Alexis and her co-host, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, have started their second season of their television show, Whatever Martha on the Fine Living Network. It's really hilarious. I've been helping to promote the show, and consequently, Alexis and I have been spending a bit more time together, which has been very nice. You can also see us on the cover of the latest edition of my magazine, Body + Soul.
2 On the Today Show, Alexis and I were demonstrating a couple of recipes from the October issue of Living. The title of the story is Salt & Pepper and we had several different varieties of each.
5 The recipe I demonstrated is Peposo, a peppery pork stew. You begin by making slits in a bone-in pork shoulder and inserting garlic cloves. The pork gets rubbed with plenty of coarsely ground black peppercorns and then marinates overnight in 2 bottles of red wine along with rosemary sprigs.
6 Alexis demonstrated one of her favorite meals - spaghetti with pecorino romano cheese. She uses whole wheat or spelt pasta, which has more protein than regular pasta.

I always use whole wheat pasta too. I had to be convinced to ditch the white, but the whole wheat has so much flavor and it's more filling with the extra protein and fiber.

In a way, the whole Today Show segment could've been the featuring of all the different salt and peppers themselves! It sure does seem like, thru all the preparation, the actual presentations on their show are awfully short (not intended in a derogatory tone.) We just want a longer visit with Martha...that's all.

Alexis IS your daughter, Martha! (you know what I mean.) When she was on your show earlier this week - man, did she ever look like you! In discussing 'Whatever Martha' nonchalantly amongst yourselves, I got a kick out of how you had 'damaged' your child! [giggle] I'm not FLN-enabled but I know some protective/defending hackles would surface if I viewed the girls' show, and it's wonderful that you just chuckle alongside them as they throw some jabs your way. (Jennifer is as bad as Alexis! [giggle] )

Well, some rain is due for most of us this weekend in the northeast. Don't despair! Just think of it as liquid sunshine, and it just m-i-g-h-t assist in bringing on those beautiful autumnal colors we so enjoy this time of the year.

Autumn blessings!

If I thought I could look as good as Alexis, I would eat whole wheat pasta with pecorino all the time. I don't really care for the taste of whole wheat but I would make the sacrifice. You both looked terrific and today also on your show. That is a perfect brown on you; at least my TV shows it as brown.

In viewing the tape from the Today Show, I couldn’t help but notice they edited the kick for extra points by Meredith. I just happened to see it on another site – someone is always happy to oblige with this kind of footage. LOL.

I hope everyone has a very nice weekend! Trish

I enjoyed the Today segment. I am enjoying October issue of Living and look forward to the October issue of Everyday Food. The eggplant recipes from September issue of EF were delicious! The new TV season is fantastic!

I can only dream of seeing a farm like yours. It is so beautiful. I enjoy foggy mornings. I remember growing up in Pismo Beach to weather like this. Now I am in the desert and don't get very much of that, although the desert has it own beauty.

She's pretty, like Momma.

Do you find that your succulents get too much rain water sitting out in the northeast during the summer months?

martha: I miss your show on tv. can only find it @ 330am and I don't get up to get ready for work till 340am, work as a nurse and have to leave ect. The next day I am off, I'll call comcast, mslo, and station that carried your show in the past.I haven't seen it advertised on fln either.I really hate it. not many shows on tv that aren't x or r rated, I have grandkids and they're not allowed to watch some things. also I thought another 1st past favorite,Emeril, was going to have new showes to see.I was so thrilled to see both of you together in business.I hope I het some type of an answer about thew showes. I "they-powers that be" can put all this junk reporate showes, why can't I and others in this area see you? Please help, I'm really sad.I don't know when your daughter taped the show with your chow but it made mw sad that she was making fun of him in light that he had died.we had to put our dog, a golden retriever to sleep, was having seizures from an inoperable brain tumor 1 week before he turned 10.my husband and granddaughter had such a hard time. solution: got another puppy same breed 2 weeks ago.I wasn't ready but Oh well. hope all is well with you and yours. hope to see you soon.love cynthia

Wheat pasta is amazing. It leaves you full without feeling sluggish. And the taste, in my opinion, is superior.
Alexis looks like a classic beauty in that black ensemble. The off-the-shoulder look is very flattering and sophisticated, and the black looks amazing with the blond hair.

Hi Martha,
I was just watching a video of you and your mom making pierogies, and stuffed cabbage and I was wondering if there is a dvd of all the recipes your mom made. With your mom actually doing the cooking with you. When its holidays time I like to make theses two things but I like to watch the video first so I get it right.
