I was searching for charities and info on DSLD/ESPA when i came across this page. I am sorry to read this about your baby. I know how hard it must have been. My TB mare was diagnosed last week. It is so hard to decide what is right and how much is selfishness. She will be seeing a WSU Dr next week for ultrasounds and hopefully there will be no more bad news. I am happy to be broke as long as she is by my side. She means the world to me.

Hello Martha,
I am so sorry to hear about your Martyn. Besides my husband and two kids, I share my life with four dogs and the love of "my boyfriend" Waltzy. He is my oldenburg gelding, who makes my day a wonderful moment in heaven..... daily.
I know you must miss him dearly, but as you said, the only worse thing than missing them, is knowing one of our loved ones is in pain. He is dancing around, painfree now, and You are a wonderful mom, who did the right thing.
love to you

Most say thay understand, they don't, I to lost my 16yr young American Saddlebred to a situation, where that it was decided held on for me, and I need to let him go, so he was put down. I have One more that I addore, she is not allowed to play outside without a good brushing and as she is reaching her 27th birthday, I am the only one who refuses to accept her age!! I would love to see an episode of your barn, horses, and explenation to others of the work involved. I am now on disability due to the Doctor not being able to control my seizures, while working I was amazed on how many people have never been exposed to horses and how much work it is when you take care of them your self. I would love to have a sanctuary where inner city and others could come and experience! Please let me know your thoughts!!

There is a famous horse who is named Willem, who used to say, 'This it be right'. We only have our horses for a brief time, and our job is to make their lives happy and their passing without suffering. RIP Martyn.

Martha,
I am so very, very sorry for your loss. My heart broke as I read about Martyn's passing. He was such a beautiful horse. Losing a beloved animal is heartbreaking, I know. I love your horses. I think they are the most magnificent horses I have ever seen. I can't imagine losing such a grand, majestic creature. I am sure you and your staff will miss him very much. Please accept my sincere and deepest sympathy. Cherish the memories. Also, I am so glad that Meindert is ok.

Dear Martha,
I am truly sorry for your loss. He was a beautiful boy...and the spirit of a horse is such a powerful force, the loss of one is devastating.

I wanted to share with you a forum on the subject of DSLD moderated by Dr. Eleanor Kellon. This forum offers a cutting edge treatment protocol pioneered by Dr. Kellon, as well as being a support group for owners of affected horses. You can access the group here:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSLD-equine/?yguid=160861824

One of the foremost equine nutrition experts in the country, Dr. Kellon also moderates forums on EPSM, PPID (Equine Cushing’s) and Insulin Resistance. In addition, she offers a number of very comprehensive online courses for horse owners and equine professionals alike.

Having your horse diagnosed with DSLD, EPSM, or PPID is heartbreaking, and can leave an owner feeling powerless. The knowledge offered here is empowering...

Again, my deepest sympathies.
Best,
Maria Siebrand

Martha, so very sorry to hear about Martyn's passing. Animals bring so much to our lives. The photo shows the great love the two of you had for each other.

So very sorry for your loss. Was this identified as DSLD? It seems this breed tends to have dropped pasterns. He was a beautiful boy and I am sure he will be missed!
A poem:

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
