I'm no Luddite. I have the latest Mac desktop and lapbook computers, a well exercised iPod and certainly spend more than an ample share of my time emailing and texting - however recently I have been questioning where all this technological advancement is leading us. Brooks Stevens, the American industrial designer coined the phrase 'planned obsolesence' in the 50's and it is alive and well today - as an example when a computer one buys today is almost obsolete tomorrow - making the consumer feel a need to purchase the newer model. To what end, I ask, will the newer model make it significantly easier to write that book, start that business or manage one's life than the old model purchased a week ago did? The deadly 'time-sink' of personal email, texting, twitter and facebook is another topic - do we really need to all be in touch every minute of every day - does that not take away from the special once a week phone call to 'catch-up' with friends after we have had time to distill the events that we have experienced and turn them into a meaningful conversation. Do we need 4 text messages from a friend in an evening saying where they are going to dinner, what they are ordering, that the people at the next table are loud and whether or not they enjoyed the meal - and to top it off expect a response to each text message? Starting a business in the past year and looking for inspiration, I turn always to the usual suspects Whitman, Thoreau and Emerson for validation of the individual mind - in addition I read loads of biographies and autobiographies of people with creative minds and who lead productive and successful lives - like artists and writers and business leaders - that is how I discovered 'The Martha Rules'. What I have discovered is that in the modern period, between the wars - the 20's, 30's and 40's - that a HUGE amount of important and influential work was done that informs our life today. Great writers working in the cafes of Paris - great European and American architects and designers changing the world around them - great business leaders building important businesses - and at one point I realized they had no computers, no email, no text messages, no facebook, no kindles and yet they were intensely productive creating great work. Even though the new technology can be a great tool - I can't help but wonder if this personal technology boom and the fascination with it is not poisoning us a a people - creating a distraction and an excuse for not fully engaging meaningful work?

Martha, I just wanted to say that you are doing "good things." Especially with your assisted living home. Do you have any plans of getting solar panels at any of your homes, being that you believe in going green?

Hi Martha, As I have said before, you have a super crew who work for you. Steve and Eliad are no exception! They did a great job of filling you and us in on that terrific CES in Las Vegas. Kudos to both of them and how great of Eliad to share all of those fantastic photos with all of us who are interested in all technology. Thanks, you two, for not only great photos, but great information. Was disappointed that you weren't on 'Ask Martha' today as I was going to try again to get through to ask you a question or two. Here goes-Does Tom Tambrillo still work for you and help with all carpentry activities on your TV show and has your new beautiful Chow Chow come to live with you yet?? I hope both answers are yes!! Loved the 'Blog Show' today! Missed Brian Williams, but know he is in Haiti right now. My prayers are to all of those in Haiti. Jan

Interesting how much of that stuff is just decorative. That "I'm easy" t-shirt? Proof that this is mecca for the nerdliest basement dwellers. A line for free coffee? Sad. Nonetheless, it's good to know what is out there. Thanks for the tour!
