The New Sheep Shed
You may recall my recent blog about the delivery to my farm of an adorable pair of Black Welsh Mountain Sheep. They have adapted quite nicely to their new surroundings and I wanted to give you an update about how we’ve increased the size of their outdoor romping ground and provided them with a new shed. In fact, it is the same cedar shed that was featured this past season on my television show for a painting segment. It was, of course, painted Bedford Gray, as are all the buildings on my farm. The structure is made by Sheds USA and is available at The Home Depot, where you can also find my wonderful line of 280 paint colors in 5 different finishes.
1 The sweet little Black Welsh Mountain Sheep in their temporary pen under their temporary shelter
2 Sheds USA delivered the structure disassembled.
3 The sheep were curious as the Hi-Lo moved the floor of the shed into the field.
4 Cement blocks were positioned so that the floor would sit upon them.
5 The floor was then lowered onto the blocks.
6 The sides of the shed were carried in.
7 As were the roof parts
8 The shed was complete with the exception of roof shingles. Chhiring enclosed the space with wire fencing.
9 The next day, Chhiring and Pete hammered on cedar shingles for the roof and replaced the glass window with bronze screening.
10 The shingles will weather and will eventually turn nearly the same shade of gray as the shed.
11 The wood floor was covered with a rubber mat and lined with hay.
12 A detail of the screening
13 More ventilation holes were cut in the wood.
14 The sheep feel at home here.
15 And they love to run in their larger yard.
16 They move fast!

One of my sister's recently had a shed delivered similar to yours pictures here, only bigger. She used it as a potting shed. The exterior looks like a miniture house. These are such great ideas for housing animals. Easy on the eyes as they say. Thanks Martha

Those Black Welsh Mountain Sheep are beautiful and what a lovely home they now have. My grandmother grew up on a farm in Cornwall, England, and kept Black Sheep too, though I don't know if they were Welsh or not! I love the Bedford Grey: I am going to source the colour to get my garden Walls painted the same shade. Looks great. Oh and didn't Sbeds USA do a great job. The neat ventilation holes are both stylish & practical. Green Acres is the life to be!

Martha so have you named these new additions to the farm? They are adorable.

Picture perfect ! Did you painted the inside as well and what kind of paint (exterior from home depot ? ) is it ? Do you have any problems with sticky paint if the weather is very humid over a longer time ? How can I prevent this ? Always love your "farm blog" !

Nice timing Martha, I was just looking for a little more garden shed inspiration.
Also glad to hear your mini-flock has more "romping ground..." Great mental picture!

Hi Martha,
The sheep shed looks like a little doll house - so stylish with the window planter and shingles. You take such great care of your precious animals - your sheep are adorable! Trish

Hi Martha, Thanks for this wonderful blog about you new baby Black Welsh Mountain Sheep! They look so healthy and happy living there on your farm. I love how you show us how to build things step by step like you did about the blueberry pergola, also. It's very useful and inspiring. I'm going to try making a smaller pergola and a shed from Home Depot some time soon. Hope your weather is improving. Ours goes from hot to cool about every other week. Hug your dogs for me. I love reading their blogs and their tweets on twitter. Very special!!! Love, Jan

The sheep are adorable! Their shed is just the perfect inclosure for them. How big do these sheep get? They look so healthy and happy already. Who could blame them! Thanks for sharing the little "no names" with us.

Oh Martha. You're always introducing me to things I didn't know I wanted. Who KNEW I really wanted a sheep shed? Certainly not me. But I do. Luckily I also want sheep. A sheep shed just isn't the same when it's filled with say, balloons or miniature spoons.

I'm sure others have noticed and commented on how Martha seems to especially enjoy dark haired animals. It's so cute and they sure look beautiful on the farm. Wish more people felt this way. Apparently dark haired animals are the least popular at shelters. Shelter workers are always trying to come up with ways to convince people to please give them a second look. They do things like put ribbons on them or bandanas around the neck. Poor sweeties.

Martha:
How really sweet, a brand new shed for the sheep to go into out of the weather. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Lovely sheep & now you can spin the wool to knit. I spin & knit & find it very relaxing & fulfilling to make something from scratch. I love your show & farm. Will be watching on Hallmark in the fall. JoAnn

Those are nice black sheep but they are not Black Welsh Mountain sheep with those docked tails.
In the UK if you are caught docking the tails your flock is unregistered and you are forbidden from ever owning Black Welsh Mountain sheep again.
They are lovely but please do not call the Black Welsh Mountain sheep because they are not!

Peoni in bloom on July 16? Hm... Mine usually bloom in May - early June once and then go dormant. Is it a special breed?

Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail right on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks.

Glad that the new sheep have a home, especially with coyotes running around !

I researched Welsh names, words for "Black" and the most common names of "pure breed sheep winners" from the Iowa State Fair (where I'm from) and came up with the following: (girl name 1st, boy 2nd)(welsh terms (defined at end)
Nelly & Noir
Gladys & Glen
(gladys = welsh "country")
(glen = welsh "valley")
Bethany & Brin (brin = welsh "hill")
Emlyn & Ebony (Emlyn = welsh "around th valley")
I hope that helps in the naming process! They are darling.

Do you worry about wild animals getting in those sheds? Are they very hot at night in these heat waves we've been having? How do the animals stay cool?
