My Birthday 2010
This year, my birthday was very pleasant. I shared some really delicious meals with friends and I got to blow out candles on a few different cakes. On the actual day of my birthday, I arranged an early morning hike with my trainer, Mary Tedesco and my friend, Muffin Dowdle along the Leatherman’s Loop at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. This lovely 4700-acre park is owned by Westchester County and was assembled from 18th and 19th century farms and ancient wilderness. There are more than 40 miles of trails through the woods, past wetlands, rock outcroppings, or through open meadows. Our hike was moderately strenuous, but very invigorating.
My birthday dinner was held at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ABC Kitchen in Manhattan. This rather new eatery has a strong focus on farm-to-table with most items on the menu obtained from local suppliers whenever possible. I was joined by my daughter, Alexis, Kevin Sharkey, Robin Marino, Susan Magrino, and her husband Jim Dunning. It was a very delicious and memorable celebration.
1 Betsy must have reminded the boys that it was my birthday. Each of them came trotting across the paddock and gave me a warm nuzzle.
2 Muffin is a real horse lover and has a couple of her own. We have a good time riding together.
3 Rinze - better late than never.
4 We drove to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation to hike Leatherman's Loop. This loop hike traverses the hills of this park, reaching a panoramic lookout over the Cross River Reservoir.
5 These lovely trails are open to hikers and equestrians, but bicycles are not permitted.
6 The topography of the reservation is diverse from deep hollows to ridges 800 feet high.
7 Mary enjoyed snapping photos of the beautiful scenery.
8 Leatherman's Loop is classified as a moderate hike - 6 miles long and about 4 hours in length.
9 A nice photo of Muffin
10 Stone walls from the old farms are still standing throughout the park.
11 Mary enjoying a bit of meditation overlooking the reservoir
12 I joined her in the peaceful serenity.
13 After the hike, we stopped at The Bedford Post for a quick snack.
14 Later that night, at ABC Kitchen, I was given a beautiful red clutch from Chanel.
15 Sitting at an adjacent table was fashion designer Michael Kors.
16 And fashion designer Elie Tahari - It's always great to see them!
17 The crusty bread is amazing.
18 Fruity olive oil and sweet French radishes
19 A roasted portobello mushroom with celery seeds - very flavorful and satisfying
20 Farm to table crudite with a tasty anchovy dip
21 Shaved fluke with grapefruit - the sweetness of the fish melds perfectly with the acidity of the grapefruit.
22 Daughter and mother
23 Alexis, Jean-Georges, and me and Alexis's birthday creation for me
24 She made a wonderful silky smooth orange creamsicle cake.
25 One candle is plenty!
26 Alexis also baked little raspberry and blueberry tarts with a cream cheese crust. So yummy!

G'day - Glad you had such a lovely time for your B'day. It is winter 2010 here in Australia. My DH is away working at one of our ski resorts 3 months so enjoy experimenting in the kitchen.
Comfort food time;soups, curries, toasted sangers [sandwiches]. Enjoying watching past episodes on Martha on free to air midday here. Wondering if it is possible to get your EverdayFoods mag here. I am back in US for my 60th next July & my MIL's 80th in 2011!

Great Blog today with wonderful pictures. I am so pleased you had a happy birthday. Live the 'daughter and mother' picture. You both look so alike and what a talented baker. Although the cake looked good, it was the cream cheese crust pie that Alexis baked that made me feel hungry!

Many many more wonderful blessings and days ahead for you Martha, for your loved ones and the entire MSLO family. I was missing Big Martha when I saw the picture of you and Alexis with the cake. How proud she is looking down on you and Alexis and all that you have built and continue you to give to the world, especially the center that you have dedicated to her. Can I say -- those horses have stolen my heart! You seized the day and continue to inspire and teach all of us to do the same. Life is so short.

Hi Martha,
Thanks for sharing your special day with us and there is nothing like a 6 mile hike for 4 hours up and down a steep terrain to get you started! NOT. I’ll be lucky if I can walk the mall for 1 hour. You amaze me. I’m glad you had a fun day and as much as I don’t eat a lot of sweets, I can’t help but admire the ones Alexis makes. She is a great little baker no doubt about that, and cooks too! I love her salads. Anyway, I envy anyone who is on the receiving end, like Kevin! I think Alexis’ goodies were in his top ten things he can’t live without or wherever he mentioned it.
~
(If you don’t mind Martha) To Ann – Alexis put a link up today for the Orange and Cream cake she made for Martha which you can get by visiting her blog at Whatever Radio. Martha has the Whatever Radio link in the left-hand column of this page.

Thanks again Martha for sharing your birthday with us and I wish you many, many more! Trish

Hi Martha, I am so happy for you that you had such a delightful day for your birthday! Sure would be fun to go on that hike and I'm sure it was invigorating. Bet the snack at Bedford Post was great, too. Chef Jean George certainly does have a terrific restaurant and all of the food looked divine. Alexis is truly a wonderful baker and your birthdy cake was beautiful! Bet it tasted wonderful! Totally loved all of these great photos of your fantastic birthday! Wish you many, many more! Love, Jan

Gosh Martha I am not sure but I would say your true friends are those who go with you on those "moderate" hikes. Going to dinner with you is a cake walk especially if Alexis is bringing dessert.
Glad you had a fun time all day long, even if the little dogs were not excited about it.

Wow, lots of Birthday wishes! I called my daughter and showed her the cake with the one candle. She said she loved the simple cake...that the cake tray made everything look so elegant. Great pic of you and your daughter. Thanks Martha! My Word Press travel blog has a story on weird wedding trends that gets a lot of hits. My story on shoes has a pic of your boots when you were in Toronto, Canada. Thanks

Your creamsicle cake looks marvelous. Would Alexis possibly share her recipe with us? Just the name takes me back to childhood memories of beautiful cakes and this one looks so amazing.
I know you have received birthday greetings and gifts by the numbers I am sure, but may you always remember that you are such a wonderful gift to your fans. We thank you for you.
We love you.
Very Respectfully,
