A 152-Mile Bicycle Ride and Summer Interns at MSLO
Recently, two Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia employees, Katie Spear and Jeanne Meyer, participated in a bicycle trip from New York City all the way to Montauk, at the very tip of Long Island. This ride is called Ride to Montauk and offers four beautiful flat routes for beginners and experts, from 30-miles to 152-miles. Katie and Jeanne, being in tip-top condition, tackled the entire route and said it was a blast! I'd like to share these photos with you.
You may recall that every summer, for a month-and-a-half, we at MSLO, open our doors to a group of college students and recent graduates who work as interns in various departments of the company and this summer we currently have 36. These energetic interns are working in many different departments from editorial, to crafts, to art, to photography, to corporate communications, to marketing, and more. It’s always fun for me to meet the interns and I’d like to introduce them to you, as well.
1 This is MSLO executive assistant Katie Spear with Joe Schroeder - former CFO, BBDO-Atlanta. They rode with America By Bicycle and cycled 3,690 miles from Oregon to New Hampshire in the summer of 2010 and reunited in New York for this year’s Ride to Montauk. http://www.americabybicycle.com/
2 Jeanne Meyer - MSLO SVP of Communications, did the ride with several members of her triathlon team, all of whom are training for their next Ironman race later this summer - TJ, Tim, Marissa, Alex, Nick, Chris, Gunnar and Bill.
4 Katie snapped this photo of Joe as they crossed the Williamsburg Bridge, heading to Brooklyn in the early morning light
7 The organizers had great rest stops and provided fresh fruit, Lara bars, water, and gatorade. At Watermill, mile 120, pie from Briermere farms was served. At the finish at the Montauk lighthouse, they offered beer from Blue Point Brewery, plus burgers, chicken, pasta, and ice cream.
10 The finish! Jeanne says that the proof is in this Garmin read out - about 152-miles in 9-hours and 15-minutes - 8 hours of riding plus some rest stops - and 9,278 calories burned!
11 At the end of the ride, hot portable showers were offered to all of the participants. Gym bags or backpacks were taken to the finish by the organizers.
12 Katie snapped this shot after the ride on the long trip home. The Long Island Railroad shuttled riders back to Manhattan. Bicycles were carried by truck.

All I can say about that bike ride is...WOW!!!!!!
And, as for the interns...LUCKY INTERNS!!!!!!!
Martha, have you ever thought about having some interns, during the school year, of older adults? I'd like to be one, and I know a lot of your readers would jump at the chance to be an intern. (If they're still able to jump, that is.)
I hope you have a good and Godly week ahead.
Gloria G!!

Hi Martha,
I envy the bike riders – riding was always one of my favorite things to do. It gives one the best leg strength imaginable and I think it is one reason I was a fast runner on the track team. Thanks for sharing those pictures – I was really impressed with Jeanne’s Garmin read-out of burning 9,278 calories. I need to take up riding again!
~
Thanks also for introducing us to all of this year’s interns. It’s interesting to read what they are majoring in and the fun facts were actually fun to read. I chuckled at a few such as spending too much time on Twitter and Pinterest! Don’t we all! Wow, so young and some have done a lot of traveling already. I’m sure they’re having a great time in New York and especially at MSLO.
~
(Thanks Gloria for the laugh of the day – re: readers – ‘if they’re still able to jump’. About the only time I jump is when a lizard comes out of nowhere and scares the wits out of me, so I guess I can still jump!) tehe Trish

Hi Martha, WOW! What a terrific 152 mile bike ride that Katie Spear and others we involved in all the way to the end of Long Island! The photos of that event were superb and how fun to see some of them riding in East Hampton where you took some great photos! The weather sure looked great with the beautiful blue sky! Going 3,690 miles back in 2010 from Oregon to New Hampshire is also outstanding-great bike riders! Thanks for the great website 'Ride to Montauk'-that was fabulous with all of those great photos and comments, too! How nice to see all of these wonderful photos of the 25 new summer interns for MSLO! Those marvelous young people should have a great summer learning all that they can and each of their comments were terrific! Thanks for sharing-I love to see what your wonderful crew members love to do! Hope you have another great day! Off to see F&S visiting Parrots and Company store! Jan

Loved these pics. Got out my vintage bike and found tires deflated so pushed it to service station. Imagine my surprise when young attorney came up to me asking "do you need a gauge?" Seems like I just put in air until tires hold me up but he knew what he was doing and got me on my way. Great people in Dakota and also in NYC. Good luck wishes to MSLO interns..

The bike ride looked incredible! Congrats to all for staying the course.
The interns are incredible...and already so accomplished. They will have a great
Summer experiencing and working in your environment. I would say they will all have an interesting future.
