My New Kittens!
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my animals. My dogs and my cats are such wonderful companions. I enjoy keeping several pet cats and throughout the years, I have had many terrific felines. With the recent passing of my beloved Himalayan, Verdi, I started thinking about bringing a couple of new kittens into the mix. My remaining Himalayans, Bartok and Vivaldi, are becoming quite old and the dominant calico Persians, Princess Peony and Empress Tang are now three-years old. You may recall Peony and Tang’s arrival on this blog. I’ve been so happy with their company that I decided to call their breeder, Pam Rutan Dillmuth of Top Shelf Persians, who delivered last week, two adorable, fluffy, playful, and curious Persian kittens. Take a look.
4 I'm calling this adorable one, Ch'in, after Emperor Ch'in, who ruled China in 221 BC and for whom China gets its name.
5 And this sweet boy is called Kublai Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, who became the Mongolian emperor in 1260.
7 During the day, Pam works in construction. She devotes her evenings and weekends to her cats, grooming and showing.
8 I first became aware of Pam when my friend, Grace Coddington, the Creative Director of Vogue, used some of her cats in a photo shoot for the magazine. I really wanted her cats.
9 Ryan, my gardener, couldn't resist petting these fluff balls, as he was decorating the house with plants for that evening's dinner party.
10 As with all my new pets, I gently bit each kitten on the face. This is how I let my animals know that I am now their mother.
11 This is Empress Tang, a dominant calico Persian. She and her sister, Princess Peony, have the same mother as these new kittens.
13 Calico cats are almost always female, as the color trait is linked to the X chromosome. There have been few cases of male calicos, but they have all been sterile, a result of carrying two X chromosomes.
14 Persians are characterized by their large round eyes, rounded ears, short muzzle, large head, short legs, and long and thick coat.
16 There are some short-haired varieties of Persians, but they all carry the longhair trait, so there is a chance that their offspring may be long-haired.
17 Persians are the most popular of pedigree cats in the United States. Many people desire them for pets not only for their looks, but also because of their calm and unpretentious nature.
23 I took the kitties down to the basement where there are several litter boxes and Kublai Khan found one and used it right away.
24 He then paused to take in his surroundings. He seemed to be very comfortable here, which is a good thing since this is the pet grooming area of the laundry room.

Oh, Martha, my condolences to you on the passing of Verdi. As a pet lover, I know it is never easy to give them up. Your new kittens are gorgeous; I know they will bring you a lot of joy. xo

Hi Martha, I like what you do to your cat at pic number 10. I use to do the same way to my son. He is 17.5 months old now. This could be good inspiration to snap with my son too... Thanks

Dear Martha:
I love your webiste, show and magazine. You really make a busy and chaotic world a lot more organized and fun! I really appreciate all of the information that you provided on your site concerning the 4th of July. I am an active duty service member and I was recently looking for a host of information - everything from flag etiquette, traditions, food and crafts! Your site provided all of this information in one place. Thanks so much!
I was wondering if you could provide more information on your pets page about the management and care of mature cats. We have two cats between 12-14 years old and they are having more medical needs now. We love them dearly!
Thank you and have a wonderful 4th of July!

Hi Martha,
They are so sweet and I like the names you gave them. I think cats are your passion too – it’s always been obvious to me that you really love them. I remember an earlier Martha Stewart Living show when all of your cats were on the counter at the same time. Marc Morrone was petting three or four of them and you were cuddling with the rest. It think there were eight of them, and you looked into the camera and informed us that ‘no, they aren’t glued down.’ I thought that was funny and then a few seconds later, one jumped down and another followed suit but I’m sure Teeny and Weeny stayed put. I was amazed that you had so many cats. Enjoy your new babies like I know you will and let us know how they like their baths and getting their teeth brushed. Trish

Dear Martha,
Besides seeing the beautiful pictures of your farm, I also love to see your
animals. What adorable kittens. I have 2 cats, 4 Welsh Corgis, and one dove.
I always wanted to get two pets from the same litter. I know it would be so
rewarding. Love your blogs! Enjoy the new arrivals and keep the pictures
coming.
You are always an inspiration,

My all-time favorite cat, long departed, was half Persian (the result of his Persian mother having had a brief, unauthorized "relationship" with someone "below her station"). I adored him, but memories of all the grooming he required make me favor sleek, short-haired cats these days. Interesting the way you showed the kittens you're now their mother; I'd never heard of that!

Hi Martha, Oh! How adorable your new baby kittens are and you look so happy and all of these photos are so much fun to enjoy! You are the best animal lover I have ever seen and you take such great care of everyone of them! Thank you so much for sharing delightful photos of all of your animals there at your terrific farm and I love seeing F,S,&GK when they travel with you and Uncle Carlos anywhere! I looked back at the blog about the arrival of Peony and Tang back in 2009 and Pam's website and thanks for sharing them again! I'm sure Ch'in and Kublia Khan will enjoy their life there with all of your other wonderful pets and of course having you as their new Mother! They looked quite happy in your basement and up in the craft room! Looks like Ghenghis Khan likes those babies already and they were curious about him in photo #6! Ryan sure liked the kittens, too in photo #9! Photo #10 was adorable and I recall you doing the biting of your dogs years ago, too! How great that the kittens got along with Empress Tang and Princess Peony and they all have the same mother at Pam's home! It's so nice that Laura loved them , too! Photo #20 is adorable-you look so happy! I'm sure Pam will come back to see your kittens when ever she can! Can't wait to see the rerun of your TV Show where Darcy gave you a birthday party because today is my 75th birthday exactly one month before your next birthday on August 3rd! Hope you have a great day and I will, too! Off to see The Daily Wag where F&S are introducing the new Kittens! Jan

What great photos ! I have so much nepeta growing in flower beds and watch cats come daily and enjoy it. I was never given that gene that might make me wish to be mother of a cat so just watch the antics of the many others who come into my life and into my yard. I may write a book about them, though and maybe that makes me 'thier mother'.

Sorry about your baby, Verdi's passing. But I love love love your two new kittens. My cat Hobo, who is not a persian, but very fat, sleeps with me and in the winter he keeps my feet warm. I can image sleeping with all your your cats, talk about a warm blanket!

Martha, you are killing me!, These cats are so unbelievably cute. I love cats and rescued Two that were actually dumped on a golf course....asked the man doing it..why ? He said my wife doesn't,t like them. This was 10 years ago and they are the most affectionate cats ever. That,s one of many things I admire you for...you love animals as much as I do. I have a macaw ..blue and gold for 35 years and he and the cats get along famously. Thanks for those wonderful pictures.

They are so beautiful. I had one Persian and one Himalayan. One passed away due to old age - she was a rescue. My male, Sparticus, was only 7 when I lost him (he too was a rescue). On the day he left us, my step-daughter found a Persian kitty on her door stop. Mia is now a part of our family. She won't replace my other babies, but my heart is full of laughter once again.

Martha, I adopted a flame point Himalayan girl from a coworker 8 years ago. Maddie is going to turn 15 in August. My coworker told me his mother in law purchased Maddie from a breeder in Connecticut. The breeder told her you purchased Maddie's siblings. I wonder if that is true.
Good luck to you and your wonderful pet companions.

Martha Stewart I had a cat I bottle fed at age 16 and I saved allowances to buy him a pet collar when he got grown. He was a big black velvety cat I named WOLF. He got caught on a bob wire fence and the collar chocked him. I buried him in a box with all his toys and had a family funeral. I never owned another cat and I AM 50.I OWN a couple Chihuahuas now. Just thought I'd share.

.
Oodles of Cuddles
.
For Martha, Top Shelf Persians have done it once again.
Pam Rutan's passion for Persian cats, has maintained the Strain.
An adorable silver tabby kit called Ch'in,demanding cuddles.
A sweet cameo white kit called Kublai Khan, needing snuggles.
They were both introduced to the beautiful Ghenghis Khan.
Later the deal was sealed by the signature cheek bite from Gran.
The two older Persian house cats are related to the new kits.
Laura is in love again and will hug the newbies to bits.
Only thing better than one new kitten is two new kittens,
Can't wait to hear what they think of the geese and chickens.
Big attraction for all cats in Martha's house is the canary cage.
Discovering the essentials, litter food water sets the stage,
And the lazy hazy days of summer continue to roll on.
A teary adieu to the darling little ones who start anew at dawn.
.

Congrats on the new kitties. They are lucky cats indeed - lucky to have each other, and lucky to have you and your staff looking out for them. And that big house to explore!
Once again, you are a "mom" to long coated cats - what is it about all that fur that attracts you? Have you been a "mom" to a short hair kitty?
Best wishes -
Ruth & her cat "Pinky".

Sorry to hear of your cat's passing, but I very much wish you would have considered adopting one of the thousands of kittens in danger of being put to sleep in a local animal shelter (or from a local rescue, making space for another kitten or cat to be saved from a shelter) instead of purchasing from a breeder.
The pet overpopulation crisis in America is overwhelming, and the people trying to solve the problem need visible people to set the right example for the rest of the country.

Sorry....Maine Coons are the best. You have to have at least one.
Speaking of biting on the face, Pam the vampire on HBO's True Blood would do something like that to show the cats were hers. You should get the actress on your show or magazine, because although she plays a fierce vampire, she's a softie and does a lot of charity work for animals in the US and around the world. She is doing a documentary this summer about saving animals. If you did a cover for Halloween with the True Blood star, it would be a hit too.

Cats scare me. I was scratched severely as a baby. I want love cats but, I am afraid. Are there calmer breeds then others?
Posted by: rose | July 11th, 2012 at 1:28 pm
Beautiful cats, Martha!
Did you guys know that Persian and Himalayan cats are frequently given up to shelters because not everyone wants to maintain them? But you don't have to be Martha Stewart to properly care for a Persian cat. It just takes some regular, brief quality time with your baby or trips to a groomer. There are several Persian-specific rescues across the country who help find homes for Persians.

Dearest Martha, Please know that my most precious Himalayan Sammy looked so much like your Verdi- I would always look for photos of the 2 of you as a reminder that I am not the only one who loved him more than life itself. Its been 2 years- he was MISDIAGNOSED & only 8 yrs old. I have had many many losses over the years of my life, but NEVER one quite like the loss of my angel Sammy..SO you have my heartfelt sympathy for your great loss. I also have 2 other Siamese that were babies when they were presented to me after Sammy''s loss. OF COURSE I adore them both! They are my LIFE! But I will always yearn for that most precious face of my darling Sammy....
All the best to you & your new babies! I know how much joy they will bring to you!

Martha... from whence comes your belief that "biting a kitten on the face" communicates to it that you are its mother? I have read over 1000 cat books (including multiple texts on feline biology and evolutionary biology, behavior, care, health, breeding, and many more topics) and I've never once come across such a thing. I've also read dozens of books on felines in the literature, legend and folklore of many cultures and have never seen such a practice referenced. I (and, I'm sure, many others) would be REALLY interested to learn the origins of your belief.

Dear Martha,
My condolences on the loss of dear Verdi. It's always hard to lose a beloved pet but heartening to know your heart remains open to adopting again. With your high profile influence, I'd love to see your brand advocate more shelter rescue.
Peace, love & purrs your holistic cat behaviorist neighbor.

I love your kittens, they're beautiful. However, I would like to see that you adopt a kitten or a dog from a shelter. There are so many cats and dogs who need a home. They may not be pure breeds, but they are so good and grateful. And we need role models, important public figures like you, to show that adopting from shelters is the way to go. Please, take this into consideration, there are so many animals who need a home. Thank you.

Hi Martha and congratulations on your new additions. I too am an animal lover - My wonderful chow chow Honey passed away years ago and since then I have only added kitty cats to the family. My two calicos are beautiful and share their home with a brown tabby, an orange tabby and a feral cat turned pet tuxedo. They are all rescues. I hope that you will consider adding a rescue cat to your home - So many cats need homes that buying a cat is a little tough for me to imagine. Thanks and take care. Sharyn

What adorable kitties, Martha. So cool that you are a cat lover.
One thing I would mention, though, is dry food isn't considered the healthiest. It's processed and dehydrating and has too much carbohydrate for a carnivore. Check out catinfo.org ~ a great site by a vet with a lot of good info about feline nutrition.

I love cats and your's are really cute. I lost my cat about 3 months ago, he was hit by a car. He was a yellow or orange cat and his name was Max. I got him from my daughter and the only thing that she ask me was if I could name him Max after her cat that she had when she was younger. We loved the cat and felt very bad when he past away. So I arranged to call my cat Max and we were happy together.

Love the cats, sorry to hear about the loss of a pet, we have lost 5 in the last year. I was wondering, since its Martha's birthday tomorrow, how would she feel about giving something instead of receiving for her birthday? I volunteer at an animal shelter in Michigan which is truly making a huge difference in people's (and pets) lives. The cat room is just beginning and needs scratching posts badly. I have been seeing the cedar posts with Martha Stewart show as advertised, hmmm the organization "With a little help from my friends" of Antrim County Michigan could really use those...anyone care to donate a few?
