I Went To The Caramoor Opening Night Gala
This past June 22nd, I attended the gala for the 68th Summer Festival at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, right near my home in Katonah, New York. Caramoor is a 90-acre estate where Lucie and Walter Rosen built an Italianate-style villa and gardens to entertain their friends from around the world. In 1946, the Rosens opened their property as a performing arts center with a concert series that soon evolved into the Caramoor International Music Festival. The production that opening evening was a revival of the Broadway classic She Loves Me, written by composer/lyricist team, Joe Masteroff and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof). First staged on Broadway 50 years ago, this amusing romantic comedy is about two feuding colleagues who begin to realize that they have been friends as secret pen-pals all along. It was a delightful evening in a lovely venue.
This was the festive opening night of Caramoor. The giant white tent was festooned with red balloons. The beautiful decor was provided by Ned Kelly & Company. http://www.nedkellyandco.com/
The tables were very festive and the theme was red for the musical She Loves Me. The gala was catered by Great Performances. http://www.greatperformances.com/
This is Jeffrey Haydon, the new CEO of Caramoor, who has been the Executive Director of the Ojai Music Festival, in Ojai, California.
This is Nita Lowey (D, NY18th), our inimitable Congresswoman.
Also seated was Sean Patrick Maloney, member of the US House of Representatives (D, NY18th). He is young, avid, smart, and very progressive and represents a large constituency.
Caramoor Chairman, James Attwood, bestowed the evening's award on Zita Rosenthal, a former trustee of Caramoor who has been very philanthropic throughout the years. She was eloquent and funny and very knowledgeable about the early days of Caramoor.
Seated next to Sean Patrick Maloney was Leslie Williams, the wife of Jim Attwood.
A much more engaging photo of them
It was good to see Tom and Barbara Israel. Barbara is a leading dealer in fountains, statues, sundials, urns, gate pier finials, furniture, fencing, and wellheads dating from the fifteenth through the early twentieth centuries. http://www.bi-gardenantiques.com/
Another shot of Sean Patrick Maloney and Jim Attwood - The rose arrangements were stunning!
My friend Kathy Sloane also attended the gala.

The grounds were magical and the moon was almost full.
The inside of the Venetian pavilion - The Theater is set around Greek and Roman pink marble columns, topped by Venetian arches and protected by a billowy, light-filtering tent. It's always brilliantly lit and the acoustics excellent.
The bustling audience just getting seated for a tour de force production of She Loves Me.
The audience was packed and very enthusiastic about the performances and the music. The composer/lyricist team, Joe Masteroff and Sheldon Harnick, (Fiddler on the Roof) even took a bow at the end.
