Here I am with my Chow Chow puppy on the way to Skylands, my home in Maine. She's very comfortable on the plane - the ride lulled her right to sleep.
Every summer, I try to spend as much time as possible at Skylands. It's a long eight-hour drive, so when I can, I fly.
And, when I fly, I like to plan very early departures, so I still have a full day once I get there.
While in the air, we passed some familiar sights. This is the Tappan Zee Bridge, a cantilever bridge crossing the Hudson River and connecting Westchester County and Rockland County, both in New York. It is the longest bridge in the state of New York. The bridge is currently under construction.
We flew over parts of Westchester, including Bedford. The prominent road here is interstate 684, a 28-mile long north-south highway in New York and Connecticut.
If you look closely, you can see my farm in this photo.
My Bedford farm is not far from the Cross River Reservoir.
The reservoir sits within the towns of Bedford, Lewisboro, and Pound Ridge. It is about three miles long and can hold more than 10-billion gallons of water.
On the other side of the reservoir is the Mount Holly Sanctuary, the Yarrow Preserve, and one of my favorite places to horseback ride, the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.
Maine's coast has close to three thousand offshore islands, from small granite ledge to Mount Desert Island. Less than 50 of the islands are inhabited.
Maine has more than 3400 miles of coastline - that's more than California. It's only exceeded in length by two continental states, Florida and Louisiana, which has mostly bayou country.
Ash Island, in the foreground, is part of Knox County in Maine. It consists of woods, fields, and granite. Above it, it is easy to see the Knox County Regional Airport.
Rockland, Maine is a popular tourist destination. It is the departure point for the Maine State Ferry Service to all the islands in Penobscot Bay. It hosts the annual Maine Lobster Festival, and is home to the well-known Farnsworth Art Museum.
There are many islands in Penobscot Bay. The bay served as a portal for the one time "lumber capital of the world", Bangor.
Bradbury Island is in Hancock County, Maine situated between Crow Island and Orchard Beach. Hancock County is also home to one of my favorite places in Maine to hike - Acadia National Park.
This is Deer Isle Bridge - a suspension bridge spanning Eggemoggin Reach in Maine. It's the only vehicular connection from Maine's mainland to Little Deer Isle.
Maine is the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. Known for its scenery - it's jagged, mostly rocky, low, heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways, and for its seafood, especially lobsters and clams.
Maine is the least densely populated U-S state east of the Mississippi River. It is called the Pine Tree State - about 83-percent of its land is forested.
In the distance is the Bar Harbor Airport.
Here was the view as we approached the runway at Bar Harbor Airport.
Finally we touched down on the tarmac - a safe and smooth landing.
A direct flight to Bar Harbor is only about an hour and a half or so long - the puppy was very good the entire flight.
