To launch my 85th book, "Appetizers", I traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earlier this week, to do a demo and book signing at Macy's Center City.
Macy's Center City is located in the original Wanamaker's Department Store building. Founded in 1861, Wanamaker's was the first department store in Philadelphia and one of the first in the United States.
Macy's occupies three floors of the historic building.
In what was called the Grand Court, sits a large bronze eagle, obtained from the St. Louis World's Fair. It quickly became a symbol of the Wanamaker's store and a popular meeting place for shoppers.
The common saying was "meet you at the eagle" and shoppers knew exactly what that meant.
I arrived at Macy's to delightful sales associates helping with check in. I always enjoy doing book signings because it's an opportunity to meet new and interesting people.
Here I am in front of the step and repeat - a publicity backdrop used primarily for photography. The name comes from the repeating pattern on the banner. You see them at every red carpet celebrity event, and other fashion related gatherings.
One lucky winner won this in a lottery drawing - a collection of Martha Stewart kitchen items available only at Macy's.
My cake stands and compotes can be used for so many different things. I love the clean, refreshing white with all the colorful fruits. These pieces are great for every season of the year.
Kitchen supplies, such as these cutting boards, were well-stocked on the shelves. In fact, there was a ton of Martha Stewart products there, just waiting to be purchased.
Kitchen supplies and other necessary baking tools filled the shelves. It will soon be time to make delicious treats for those school bake sales!
Martha Stewart dishes, such as bowls, plates, mugs, etc.
The cast iron french oven is one of the most popular items. It comes in a variety of colors. It tastefully slow-cooks its meals for moisture-rich flavor.
More of the Martha Stewart kitchen collections.
Look at the vast amount of kitchen supplies and small tools.
Also from the St. Louis World's Fair was the Grand Court Organ. At the time it was moved to the Wanamaker's Grand Court location, it was among the world's largest organs.
Here were the pipes of the massive organ. It took 13-freight cars to ship the entire organ, and two-years to install it.
Currently, the organ is played twice a day - at noon and then again at 5pm. The largest pipe is made of Oregon sugar pine three inches thick and more than 32-feet long. The smallest pipe is about a quarter-inch in length.
Commanding more than 28-thousand pipes is this massive console, with 729 color-coded stop tablets.
And six ivory keyboards. Under the keyboards are 42-controls and 168 piston buttons.
The entire instrument weighs 287-tons.
They let me play the organ, or at least take a photo of me sitting at the keyboards - how fun!
The demo space was beautiful. The old building still had much of its wood paneling in some sections.
We made several items from my "appetizers" book - margaritas on page 235, winter crudités with buttermilk dip page 54, pull-apart lobster rolls page 130, and cherry BLTs page 225.
Thomas joseph accompanied me to Philadelphia for these demos - we always have lots of fun cooking together at these events.
The audience was filled the entire room. In fact, it was standing-room only. Thomas and I kept busy with our cooking, but it was nice to see such a large, energetic crowd.
These were our lobster rolls. Pickles and potato chips were served with it.
Stuffed cherry BLTs. These were delicious.
The crudite included celery, cauliflower, endives and pickle slices.
Wait staff passed out everything Thomas and I made - it all went very quickly.
After the demo, Thomas and I answered food questions from the audience.
Macy's also had a very nice display of my Whim bedding collection - full of prints to express anyone's personal style.
Whim is made in different, more cheerful colors that are easy to combine.
Each Whim set includes a comforter, one or two standard shams. All of the Whim items are sold exclusively at Macy's.
After the book signing, I signed many books.
It was a lively bunch - the lines were long, but I did one book, after another, after another.
Here I am signing another book.
And, each one was personalized. Those details are very important to me.
There were lots of happy guests standing in line with their new books!
And, the line went on and on - don't forget to pick up your copy. I know you will love all the tasty bites!!!
Here was another book to sign, and a photo - sometimes, I took photos with the visitors.
Here I am with some of the members of the Macy's department store team.
The last book, done with the signing - my signing hand was getting a little tired, but it was such a fun event!
