Central Park and a Sea of Hats!

Last Wednesday was a chilly, rainy day here in the northeast, but that didn’t put a damper on the 30th Annual Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon.  This is a really fun event that I try to attend every year and if you are a regular reader of this blog, you may remember my postings from previous years about this important gathering.  Frederick Law Olmsted is, of course, the famous American landscape designer and the father of American landscape architecture.  Olmsted designed many renowned urban parks, including the spectacular Central Park in Manhattan, which is where the luncheon is held.  The Hat Luncheon is hosted by The Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, which relies heavily on funds raised at this event to continue to protect and maintain the park.  This year, more than 1,200 supporters gathered beneath the tent, sporting a sea of amazing hats and raised a record-breaking 3.5 million dollars!

My Appearance on 2 Broke Girls Tonight!

There’s a very funny show on CBS on Monday nights called 2 Broke Girls, set in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York.  The sitcom follows the adventures of two financially poor women, Max and Caroline.  Max comes from a poor working-class family.  Caroline, on the other hand, was born wealthy, but is now penniless because of her father’s shady business dealings.  The two meet while waitressing in a greasy spoon diner, begin an unlikely friendship, and then become roommates.  Caroline soon discovers that Max has a real talent for baking fabulous cupcakes and they begin saving their wages to start a cupcake business.  Of course, there’s a hilarious cast of characters and I was surprised, and quite pleased, when I received an invitation to appear on an episode.  Here are some behind-the-scene photos taken on the set last March.  It was a really fun experience and I hope you will catch this episode of 2 Broke Girls tonight on CBS.  Check your local listings.

Finding Your Roots This Sunday Night on PBS

Last January, I had the honor of taping a segment for the fascinating PBS program called Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., which will be airing this Sunday evening.  Being fascinated with genealogy myself, I already knew a great deal about my ancestors and I was very curious with what Professor Gates could add to that knowledge.  Gates and his production team work closely with leading U.S. genealogists and ancestry experts from around the world, discovering family stories and unknown histories and relatives that the guests of this show never knew existed.  The Professor found it fascinating that many of my ancestors were domestic workers and craftsmen, such as ornamental ironworkers, basket makers, seamstresses, and farmers.  Others were entrepreneurs, running a butcher shop, a delicatessen, and even a saloon.  It’s clear to see that my genealogy has really formed who I am today.  I hope you can tune into Finding Your Roots this Sunday at 8PM.  Check your local listings.
