1 This monumental Eric Soderholtz planter was created before 1930, in Gouldsboro Maine. I found the pot in an antiques store in Maine - Bob Withington's. It was planted in June with exotics including giant alocasia and succulents.

3 A Gertrude Jekyll-type pot filled with oversize succulents - They were planted in June, and by Sept/Oct had attained a very good size.

10 The garden at Lily Pond reaches it peak - when? In October! The turquoise blue pots, collected over the years, were planted with several varieties of alocasia. The ones in the back are giagantic this year, underplanted with caladiums and dicohndra.

11 This alocasia is smaller in height but the very beautiful fabric-like leaves are highly defined with many shades of green.

16 Caladiums from Home Depot grew very well, as did the dicondra, which was tiny in June, when we planted it.

You'll also find a fascinating story about Wolff Pottery and my visit with master potters Guy Wolff and his son Ben.  I first encountered Guy when I was traversing Litchfield County in Connecticut in search of antiques, plants, and ideas for the magazine. Ensconced in a small wooden building, Guy was busy making flowerpots for gardeners like me. He explained that inspiration came from history, paintings, and his own artistic imagination. I was quite taken by his pots and became a 'regular' customer.

Son Ben grew up watching his father throw pots and it was only natural for him to develop his own beautiful designs, tools, methods, clays, colors, and embellishments. When choosing pots for my greenhouses in Bedford, I went for the more historical shapes Guy made, but asked Ben to design the unique darkish-gray wash on light clay - so remarkable! 2 This charming wagon is at the entrance to Guy's driveway.

3 This is Guy's newly finished pottery shop. The front is a restored 1740 post and beam structure, which houses his showroom. Guy added onto the back to create his work room. You can see photographer Frédéric Lagrange with his camera in the doorway.

6 Ben also displays his pots in Guy's shop. Ben is known for using a wide selection of clays, glazes, and finishes to achieve his signature look.

7 Here I am admiring some of Guy's 'One of a Kind' collection. These pots are spectacular.

9 This print is of a Rembrandt Peale painting of his brother Rubens, who was a botanist. He is holding a potted geranium, reputed to be the first specimen of this exotic plant ever grown in the New World. Guy, of course, studied and reproduced this original pot.

10 Guy keeps his personal collection above the showroom. This is old English stoneware.

11 Many of these pieces are historical New England pieces.

12 These sake jars are historic Tamba Ware from Kyoto.

]]> http://www.themarthablog.com/2009/08/more-guy-wolff-pottery-as-seen-in-the-september-msl.html/feed 26 Maine road trip continues, Wiscasset and The Marston House http://www.themarthablog.com/2009/07/maine-road-trip-continues-wiscasset-and-the-marston-house.html http://www.themarthablog.com/2009/07/maine-road-trip-continues-wiscasset-and-the-marston-house.html#comments Wed, 29 Jul 2009 04:01:08 +0000 Martha Stewart http://www.themarthablog.com/?p=2684 Continuing on our journey, we drove to Wiscasset, a very pretty little village and also the antique center of coastal Maine.  I had driven through last summer and was very impressed with one shop in particular called The Marston House, in a very beautiful 19th century carriage house.   Owners, Paul and Sharon Mrozinski, focus on American and French 18th, 19th, and 20th century furniture, textiles, and decorative objects.  Their friend and neighbor, Diane Haas, who is a friend of my friend, Jane Heller, helped us with the itinerary of this trip.  Paul, Sharon, and Diane were kind enough to invite my little group of traveling ladies for an excellent lunch prepared in the kitchen of the shop.  The food was colorful, fresh, organic, and very, very delicious.

The cage sits in a small dining room located through the kitchen servery and at first, I wasn't sure how to decorate the walls. A couple of years ago, I was visiting Art Basel Miami Beach,  said to be the most important art show in the United States, when I came upon a collection of ten most unusual bird portraits by Belgium-based contemporary artist, Carsten Höller.

What makes this collection so unique is that the birds were not born naturally, but were the result of scientific genetic mutation. Carsten Höller, who studied biology before becoming an artist, was drawn to the exotic plumage of these birds. He used a 19th century process called photogravure, in which a photographic image is etched onto a copper plate and then printed in ink. These limited edition prints are a fascinating study in black, white, and shades of gray and are perfect for what is now called 'the bird room.' Please enjoy this photo gallery.

On Wednesday evening, a group of us from my company attended the Gala Benefit Preview of the American Antiques Show (TAAS), held at the Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 West 18th Street in New York City. A very popular show for the past eight years, TAAS features some of the finest dealers in seventeenth to twentieth century American folk art, furniture, Native American art, decorative arts, and fine arts. Net proceeds from this preview benefit the American Folk Art Museum, a most extraordinary collection of American Folk Art and Americana, dating from the eighteenth century to present day. The show runs through this Sunday and it was amazing to see. And I encourage anyone visiting New York City to pay a visit to the American Folk Art Museum – it’s fascinating.

]]> http://www.themarthablog.com/2008/05/lets-go-antiquing-together-in-fabulous-sag-harbor-dont-forget-to-leave-me-a-comment.html/feed 71 A trip to the 16th annual Garden Furniture Show -- come see my pictures! http://www.themarthablog.com/2008/04/a-trip-to-the-16th-annual-garden-furniture-show-come-see-my-pictures.html http://www.themarthablog.com/2008/04/a-trip-to-the-16th-annual-garden-furniture-show-come-see-my-pictures.html#comments Tue, 29 Apr 2008 07:01:16 +0000 mslo1 http://www.marthablogspot.com/2008/04/a-trip-to-the-16th-annual-garden-furniture-show-come-see-my-pictures.html This past Thursday, Kevin Sharkey and I attended the Benefit Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale at the 16th annual Antique Garden Furniture Show and Sale at the New York Botanical Gardens, located in the Bronx.  This year there were 36 dealers from around the country, who displayed really extraordinary garden furniture and ornamentation dating from the early 1700’s to the 1950’s.  Some of the highlights of the plant sale included hard-to-find trees and shrubs, and a wide range of unusual perennials for sun and shade.  The really nice aspect of this sale is that plant lovers, like myself, can take a piece of this magnificent botanical garden to nurture and enjoy at home.  It’s also a splendid time of year to be at the Botanical Gardens.  After wandering through the plant sale and the antiques displays, Kevin and I had a difficult time leaving the splendor of all the thousands of bulbs, and the flowering trees and shrubs, all in magnificent full bloom.  Such heaven!   

Wow! I have never seen ten urns in a set before. These would be great in a large formal garden. I was quite tempted but finally decided that I really need other types of garden ornamentation more.

What a wonderful collection of dogs, cats, and other animals made from stone and cement. It seems that so many people are 'decorating' their homes, inside and out, with old garden ornaments, like these.

These are my friends from Fleur, in Mt. Kisco, NY, who always have beautiful garden furnishings.  They brought an impressive collection of mushroom seats, in carved stone, to this year's show.

Here are 2 monumental limestone planters that I actually purchased - I'm told that they came from a school in the US Midwest.  The plinth, or base, measures 3-feet square.

Mark Morris, the antiques dealer - not the famous dancer-choreographer - sold me the planters.  He had many other items that were extremely beautiful.

Multiples of a kind are very useful in decorating and were actually available in several booths this year.  It's always surprise to find sets of 4 or more.

These carved, stone  Gertrude Jeykll pots really caught my eye - they were very expensive - but so beautifully aged and in mint condition.

I was really drawn to this faux bois cement fountain - large and in perfect moss-covered condition.  The lead liners and the size made it very attractive, but I just didn't know where it would look best in my garden.

Also beautiful were these 2 square, stone planters - Kevin really wanted to take these home.

The Steins always have an amazing assortment of very beautiful furnishings for the home and garden - they're extremely knowledgeable, too.
