Last spring, I posted a blog about planting my urns at Skylands, my home in Maine. I am happy to report that those urns grew successfully and I now have some recent photos to show you. I also have new pictures of some very different plantings taken at my home in East Hampton. Those urns also did extremely well. Sadly, it's the end of the growing season and time to empty the plant material and store both plants and urns for the winter.

When you receive your September issue of Martha Stewart Living, you will find that it's filled with many wonderful decorating ideas. You'll also find a fascinating story about Wolff Pottery and my visit with master potters Guy Wolff and his son Ben. I first encountered Guy when I was traversing Litchfield County in Connecticut in search of antiques, plants, and ideas for the magazine. Ensconced in a small wooden building, Guy was busy making flowerpots for gardeners like me. He explained that inspiration came from history, paintings, and his own artistic imagination. I was quite taken by his pots and became a 'regular' customer.

Son Ben grew up watching his father throw pots and it was only natural for him to develop his own beautiful designs, tools, methods, clays, colors, and embellishments. When choosing pots for my greenhouses in Bedford, I went for the more historical shapes Guy made, but asked Ben to design the unique darkish-gray wash on light clay - so remarkable! Please enjoy this blog. These photos were taken behind-the-scenes at the magazine shoot.

Continuing on our journey, we drove to Wiscasset, a very pretty little village and also the antique center of coastal Maine. I had driven through last summer and was very impressed with one shop in particular called The Marston House, in a very beautiful 19th century carriage house.  Owners, Paul and Sharon Mrozinski, focus on American and French 18th, 19th, and 20th century furniture, textiles, and decorative objects. Their friend and neighbor, Diane Haas, who is a friend of my friend, Jane Heller, helped us with the itinerary of this trip. Paul, Sharon, and Diane were kind enough to invite my little group of traveling ladies for an excellent lunch prepared in the kitchen of the shop. The food was colorful, fresh, organic, and very, very delicious.

After leaving Portland, we continued on our journey up Route One headed for the little city of Hallowell, ME. We were in search of a lighting store that we were told not to miss. When we found Brass and Friends Lighting at 154 Water Street, we were a bit skeptical looking at it from the outside. However, stepping through the doors was like stepping into a lighting extravaganza, one that I've never experienced before. Brass and Friends has an incredible inventory of quality antique lighting fixtures. Come and see these photos of this most eclectic shop. Believe me, if you're looking for something particular in lighting, you may very well find it here.

I always enjoy stopping at Bob Withington Antiques, located on scenic Route One in York, Maine, in the southern part of the state. Withington & Company specializes in European and American antiques, decorative arts, garden ornaments, lighting, and mirrors. The problem I have at Withington is that I want so much of what they have in the shop - beautiful and unusual pieces. It's a good thing that I travel with a digital camera. Somehow having an image to take away and look at satisfies my urge to buy something extraordinary but something I don't necessarily need.

One of the focal points at my home in Bedford is my large canary cage, which contains a sizable population of beautiful and melodious red and orange canaries. The cage sits in a small dining room located through the kitchen servery and at first, I wasn't sure how to decorate the walls. A couple of years ago, I was visiting Art Basel Miami Beach,  said to be the most important art show in the United States, when I came upon a collection of ten most unusual bird portraits by Belgium-based contemporary artist, Carsten Höller.

What makes this collection so unique is that the birds were not born naturally, but were the result of scientific genetic mutation. Carsten Höller, who studied biology before becoming an artist, was drawn to the exotic plumage of these birds. He used a 19th century process called photogravure, in which a photographic image is etched onto a copper plate and then printed in ink. These limited edition prints are a fascinating study in black, white, and shades of gray and are perfect for what is now called 'the bird room.' Please enjoy this photo gallery.

◄ Back

Next ►

Picture 1 of 25: The bird prints are hung on all four walls of what I call the bird room.

See All Photos in this Gallery

On Wednesday evening, a group of us from my company attended the Gala Benefit Preview of the American Antiques Show (TAAS), held at the Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 West 18th Street in New York City. A very popular show for the past eight years, TAAS features some of the finest dealers in seventeenth to twentieth century American folk art, furniture, Native American art, decorative arts, and fine arts. Net proceeds from this preview benefit the American Folk Art Museum, a most extraordinary collection of American Folk Art and Americana, dating from the eighteenth century to present day. The show runs through this Sunday and it was amazing to see. And I encourage anyone visiting New York City to pay a visit to the American Folk Art Museum – it’s fascinating.

◄ Back

Next ►

Picture 1 of 56: Kevin took photos of our entrance - this one of me entering the show in front of one of the great quilts - the heads are of the myriad paparazzi at such events.

See All Photos in this Gallery

Because of my visa problems, I was not, to my great dismay, permitted
to travel from Prague to England. Instead, Kevin Sharkey
and Robin Marino – the new CEO of MSLO – made the trip to
Stoke-on-Trent in England without me. They had a fascinating visit to
the potteries of our business partner – Wedgwood. Please enjoy these
stunning pictures that Kevin took of just some of the gorgeous things
that they saw on this field trip. I’m very sorry to have missed it.

In this beautiful and stately cupboard are the Martha Stewart designs for the company - sold at Macy's and now at Harrod's.

This is one of Wedgwood's iconic table decorations - it's for sweetmeats, which is candy or sweet confections.

The Wedgwood Museum is a wonderful place for visitors - it will be completed in 2009 in time for the 250th anniversary of the potteries.

On Tuesday of this week, my television crew and I visited the lovely home of Richard Perlman and Ellen Hanson in quaint Sag Harbor, way out on the east end of Long Island, NY. Their house is a beautifully restored Greek revival, decorated so wonderfully by Ellen, an interior designer. www.ellenhansondesigns.com Richard is Chairman of the Board and Director of Turbochef Technologies, Inc. www.turbochef.com The reason for our visit was to tape a cooking segment using an amazingly fast Turbochef stove, which you may all watch and learn about during our next television season. It was also my friend, Memrie Lewis’s birthday and I persuaded her to join me for the fun. Because we both love to antique, we managed to squeeze some looking and shopping in after the shoot. Ellen told us where all her favorite places were in Sag Harbor. Here’s a bit of what we saw.

This is the exterior of Richard and Ellen’s home – quite elegant.

Here we are – Memrie, Richard, Martha, and Ellen.

This is Youngblood – 26 Madison St., Sag Harbor NY

Youngblood has many gorgeous lighting fixtures.

This past Thursday, Kevin Sharkey and I attended the Benefit Preview Party and Collectors’ Plant Sale at the 16th annual Antique Garden Furniture Show and Sale at the New York Botanical Gardens, located in the Bronx. This year there were 36 dealers from around the country, who displayed really extraordinary garden furniture and ornamentation dating from the early 1700’s to the 1950’s. Some of the highlights of the plant sale included hard-to-find trees and shrubs, and a wide range of unusual perennials for sun and shade. The really nice aspect of this sale is that plant lovers, like myself, can take a piece of this magnificent botanical garden to nurture and enjoy at home. It’s also a splendid time of year to be at the Botanical Gardens. After wandering through the plant sale and the antiques displays, Kevin and I had a difficult time leaving the splendor of all the thousands of bulbs, and the flowering trees and shrubs, all in magnificent full bloom. Such heaven!

Wow! I have never seen ten urns in a set before. These would be great in a large formal garden. I was quite tempted but finally decided that I really need other types of garden ornamentation more.

What a wonderful collection of dogs, cats, and other animals made from stone and cement. It seems that so many people are 'decorating' their homes, inside and out, with old garden ornaments, like these.

Another temptation - 3 identical wire-work plant holders - these would be great on a porch or in a long hallway to display begonias or African violets.

We often see Joan displaying at antiques shows. The animals and wire-work belong to her shop.

I really loved these 2 carved stone bowls - good for indoors or out.

These are my friends from Fleur, in Mt. Kisco, NY, who always have beautiful garden furnishings. They brought an impressive collection of mushroom seats, in carved stone, to this year's show.

<ahref ="http: onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=800,height=599,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false"> </ahref>

Here are 2 monumental limestone planters that I actually purchased - I'm told that they came from a school in the US Midwest. The plinth, or base, measures 3-feet square.

Mark Morris, the antiques dealer - not the famous dancer-choreographer - sold me the planters. He had many other items that were extremely beautiful.

Multiples of a kind are very useful in decorating and were actually available in several booths this year. It's always surprise to find sets of 4 or more.

These carved, stone Gertrude Jeykll pots really caught my eye - they were very expensive - but so beautifully aged and in mint condition.

I was really drawn to this faux bois cement fountain - large and in perfect moss-covered condition. The lead liners and the size made it very attractive, but I just didn't know where it would look best in my garden.

Look how beautiful these carved stone urns are.

Also beautiful were these 2 square, stone planters - Kevin really wanted to take these home.

What an exquisite bird cage - luckily it was too tall for my bird room in Bedford

The Steins always have an amazing assortment of very beautiful furnishings for the home and garden - they're extremely knowledgeable, too.

They had a pair of these beautiful urns in moss-covered condition

Bob Withington, of York, ME, has been a fine source of garden and other antiques for years. I love his taste.

a trio of urns and pedestals!

One of 2 lead baskets that would have been good prototypes for a garden basket reproduction.

Brennan & Mouilleseaux also have wonderful taste and many lovely things.

Too bad - red tags mean SOLD!

The plant sale attracts many buyers and a flurry of activity before the antiques show opens.

This statue would be beautiful in the garden or inside the home - I really would have loved her.

My friends bought these 2 carved stone eagles - originally from England, they're in fine condition.
