Gallery: Arizona, Miraval Day Two

January 08, 2009
Arizona , Miraval Day Two Read The Original Post

Here I am making the most of things. The plastic poncho, compliments of my guide, Jerry - I was the only Miraval guest up for the sopping hike.
A river in the desert - how interesting!
The desert plants loved the rain and seemed to puff up and out instantly. This compass cactus, or barrel cactus, with its yellow fruits and flowers was very happy.
These edible fruits are citrus-like in flavor and make great hollowed-out cups for shots of tequila, I'm told.
The mountains, visible on day one, were obscured by foggy rain for all of day two. The desert, looking a bit greener and fresher than the day before.
Many small streams started to run over the rocks and sand. I was surprised that there was so much runoff and not so much absorption. The reason, I was told, is because there's so little soil and a lot of rock.

so cold and wet
The compass cactus gets its name because grows, leaning in a southern direction.
a natural stone basin
We came upon this unusual brick-shaped stone.

another look at cactus fruits
The flower of the magnificent saguaro cactus, is the state flower of Arizona. This one has arms growing in many directions.
Back at Miraval - quite soggy!
