I'm planting Eucomis 'Rhode Island Red' in the center - this purple plant develops 3-foot tall leaves with slightly ruffled edges.
One of 2 giant urns from Kenneth Lynch, which sit at the entrance to the vegetable gardens.
The urn isn't quite filled to the top with potting soil, allowing room for the plants.
I planted another eucomis at the backside of the urn. The jagged-leaf plant in the foreground is Melianthus major 'Purple Haze.'
This felted foliage is Senecio cristobalensis - green on top with purple undersides. I also planted Senecio petasites, which have all green leaves.
This is my favorite kalanchoe, which I brought from Maine.
I decided to add in a few Capsicum Black Pearl - ornamental pepper plants.
I'm always happy planting in my garden
For a fun contrast - a bright orange/red coleus
A better look at the coleus - I love the yellow highlights.
Shaun is carrying extra potting soil to fill in around the plants.

The other beautifully planted urn
And here's a little tip for herbaceous peonies, which are growing around these urns -
If there are more than 2 buds on a stalk, snip off the smallest one. This will provide more energy for the larger blooms.
