This is Alfredo making furrows to plant vegetable seeds.
Mingmar is removing weeds from around the cold frames.
Alfredo and Blake are discussing which seeds to plant in which beds.
Setting the pea brush in place for the climbing beans and peas
It's important to really anchor it solidly in the ground.
Blake is smoothing the beds for plants sprouted in the greenhouse.
These little leaf lettuce plants look strong and healthy.
I really love these Royalty Purple Pod beans from Seed Savers Exchange. www.seedsavers.org
And also these Gold of Bacau beans
I'm sure the tomato vines are happy to finally be planted in the ground.
Alfredo is tying the grapes to their supports. We made delicious white and red jelly from those grapes last year.
As you can see, the peonies in way up in Maine have only just begun to bloom. The growing season is much later there.
This little tiller is used to turn and aerate the soil for a new crop.
Next a furrow is made. A string stretched taut like this is a very good guide to keep rows straight.
Titan sunflower is one of the tallest-growing, biggest-headed, and largest-seeded varieties. These giants can grow 12' tall with large yellow heads reaching 18–24" across!
We've had very good luck with sunflowers growing against this fence and hope this year will prove the same.
This part of the garden is reserved for cucumbers, squashes, and pumpkins. A garden rake is used to mound the soil.
Several mounds are formed, each approximately 12-inches across.
Pearl Hybrid cucumbers have a crunchy and nutty flavor.
Baby Pam pumpkins are the best quality for pumpkin pies, having dry, sweet flesh.
Jack O'Lantern Racer F1 is an extra early, ribbed, dark orange ornamental pumpkin.
Of course, we grow plenty of summer squash.
Taken from above, the mounds have been planted with seeds and seedlings.
Another corner of the garden contains a versatile herb garden.
The vegetable garden looks so neat and tidy. The crew did a splendid.
