Visiting California Bakeries

I always enjoy visiting new restaurants and bakeries whenever I travel - it is not only fun to try new foods, but also very inspiring to learn about other businesses and their specialties.

During my last visit to California, I decided to conduct a mini “bakery crawl” - and visit a few of the popular baking establishments in and around Los Angeles. I was interested in doing more research for my television show "Martha Bakes" on PBS, and trying some unique and wonderful breads and pastries. Many of you know Nancy Silverton, the owner and chef of the iconic La Brea Bakery - she is a pioneer in the artisanal bread industry. She first opened La Brea in the 1990s, and today, many pastry experts have followed her lead and really evolved the world of bread. Our director of food development, Thomas Joseph, and I, toured three bakeries: Gjusta in Venice, Milo and Olive in Santa Monica, and Republique in Los Angeles. Our journey was covered by the LA Times - read about it here. Enjoy some of our photos.

And, don't forget to watch my show, "Martha Bakes" - this weekend, I'll how you how to make delicious pizza right at home! Check your local listings for times on PBS!
