A lovely afternoon spent with my friend, Paul Newman, to benefit his Hole in The Wall Gang Camp
Last weekend, I was invited to the 7th annual Polo for Children luncheon to benefit the Hole in The Wall Gang Camp held at the exclusive Greenwich Polo Club in Conyers Farm. Polo for Children, of course, features a most exciting polo match. A very delicious luncheon was served and there was also a live and a silent auction that took place. My hosts for the event were Jane Green, the author and Ian Warburg, my friend.
These are my hosts, author Jane Green and businessman, Ian Warburg. Isn't her hat wonderful?

Here I am with Jane and Ian. Jane was celebrating her 40th birthday.
Many of her friends, including her lovely parents, flew in from London
for the weekend, which included the very worthwhile fund raiser for the camp.

My friend, Susan Warburg, Ian's mother, first introduced me to the Newmans many years ago.

The man himself, Paul Newman, founder of the camp
and me. I have known Paul and his wife, Joanne Woodward, for many
years. In fact, I raised money for the camp years ago with a show house
in Westport, CT.

Freddie Mannering came to the US with her mom, Giselle, a well-known
British interior designer. Freddie loved the event which was focused,
of course, on children.

Here I am wearing one of Suzanne's wonderful hats, along with Giselle, and Freddie.

James Naughton, the very talented actor/singer, joined his great friend, founder of the camp, Paul Newman, to conduct the auction - lots of money was raised.

Tabitha, Jane Green's daughter and a friend - face paint is very popular amongst the young party goers.

Paul Newman and Martha Stewart: talk about a dream team! But where is Joann?

Martha:
It looks like Paul Newman had a beautiful day for the Hole in the Wall Gang fundraiser. I'm so glad to see he is doing so well. He has always been one of my favorite actors, partly because of his generosity and partly because he looks so much like my father.
I'm hoping to attend one of the matches this summer. I met an elderly gentleman at La Cremaillere restaurant near the Greenwich border (your area) last summer who encouraged me to come this year.
It looks like great fun!
By the way, I remember the Adams House fundraiser you did for Paul Newman years ago. You featured the renovation of the house in your "New Old House" book, which I find fascinating, as I am a hands-on person.
Thanks for giving back!

Yes indeed -- I purchased a copy of New Old House about ten years ago it was on the reduced table can you believe that!! I should have looked for another copy to share -- but 17 dollars for me back then was a chunk of change. -- if there is a second Entertaining Book in production will there be a book, the story of Cantitoe Corners and the Renaissance of the 150 hectare estate you put back together? Chapters featuring the restoration and construction of the farm I can see the map you printed in your blog embellished for end pages of that volume.

Both yours and Jane's hats are beauties !! As always, I enjoyed your pictures but I can't help wondering why there are no pictures of food. I guess we're just spoiled with all the wonderful "meals" we enjoy through your blog

A worthwhile cause and a fun event by the looks of it!

Hi Martha!
You are more beautiful than ever! I love the hat you have on, very stylish indeed. The Hole in the Wall Camp is such an outstanding project and I'm pleased to see that the luncheon was so well attended.
I especially like Mr. Newman's line of salad dressings, "Newman's Own," in particular the new Light Balsamic Vinegarette, I put it on everything, and I even cook with it too. The truly wonderful thing is that a portion of the profits, from the sales of his products, go to various charities. And in the past 26 years they have given away over $200 million!

Hi Martha - I am the Advisor for my local high school's drama club in CT. For each audition, I require my students to prepare a theatrical resume for me. A few years ago I received one from a student who claimed that he had done some theatre work with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and he listed a few others. I thought he might have been teasing and/or exaggerating so I inquired after its authenticity! He then told me that he has a terminal illness and had been going to the Hole In The Wall Camp for several years - he couldn't say enough good things about it. He has grown into a young man now and runs his own computer repair shop (I use his services frequently) but I will always have a sweet spot in my heart for the good things that were done at that camp to help such a special person in my life!

I agree 100% with Jan Erickson. Two American Treasures in this blog.
The hats are fantastic as the people underneath them, wish Paul Newman had one of his on, he wore them so well in the movies. I would love to see where Jane Green stores her's. What a hat box. Martha, yours would be right by the back door on a hook waiting for you to grab it and go.
As always a touching blog.

Martha,
You look gorgeous in your hat as always.
Thanks for sharing the wonderful blog about Hole in the Wall Camp. It's a wonderful charity and am a consumer of Newman's Own Products!
I remember in the late 70's/80's that stretch of land for sale in Ashford with that beautiful pond and remembering how thrilled we were when we heard Paul Newman purchased it for the kids!
God bless you both for all the work you do.

A very interesting blog.
I have always admired the Newmans for their great sense of giving. I'm sure the children in need appreciate it greatly. I lived in Connecticut back in the 70s and heard a lot of positive feedback. Best wishes to all.

Dear Ms Stewart - my own children attended camp for many years - and I volunteered a few summers as a counselor. One of my favorite things to do with campers was to read the little plaques on the theater seats naming the benefactors. I always pointed out your plaque - and the kids loved knowing that you were a "camp person" too. Blessings to all who share their resources - it truly changes these children's lives. They really blossom there - and many get through the winter on the promise that they can return to camp in the summer. Thanks to anyone who supports the Newmans and this wonderful place.

I appreciate your publishing the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp benefit. Now ak your readers to donate! My daughter has been a camper there for 3 years and it has transformed her life, which has seen much illness & suffering. She always smiles when she speaks of the camp. And it has been totally free- which is so important to parents who have so many expenses due to illness of a child. I now read the Paul Newman is ill, and my prayers are with him. He has done so much for so many, and in person he is the kindest most unassuming man.

Well...I've never met anyone who is more of a Paul Newman fan than I am!
My family and friends have made fun of my "obsession" for years...but I don't mind.
I am thrilled to see recent photos of Mr. Newman at one of his many charity events.
My all-encompassing devotion to Paul Newman began when I was in the sixth grade...I started keeping a scrapbook at that time.
I am now 47 years old...and I admire him today for so much more than his beautiful blue eyes!
He is such a generous...talented...pro-active...devoted...positive person...and not a bad actor!
I've watched every single movie he's ever made...yes...even The Silver Chalice...and in all these years he's never disappointed me.
It may sound silly...but one of my lifelong dreams has always been to meet Mr. Newman....and I'm definitely NOT the groupie type!
I've been very close twice in my life i.e. once in the late 70's at the Hallett Motor Raceway in Stillwater, OK and again in the early 90's in Kansas City, MO when he and Joanne Woodward were filming Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.
It seems that almost everyone in Kansas City spotted him during the filming of the movie but me!
I wish Mr. Newman the best and hope he's here with us (ME!) for many...many years to come.

Having grown up in South- & Westport, and summers having ushered at the Country Playhouse, I had frequently seen the Newman/Woodward clan about town and at the ice cream parlour (is it still there?) across the Road from the Playhouse. The Newmans/Woodwards have always been the most gracious and unassuming people! Their good works are testament.
And you have always been the purveyor of charm; elevating everyone's consciousness to what looks, smells, grows, tastes and works better. Thank you for sharing this event with us.

Hi Martha,
I have been a both a Camper and a Counselor in training at both the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, CT and at another one of Paul's camps called Double 'H' Hole in the Woods Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY. Paul Newman is a great man, He is truly a hero to many of the campers who attend the camps all around the world. We greatly appreciate what he has done for us. Many memories have been formed at those camps that will never be taken away. Thank you for supporting the camps and for helping to raise money. The campers, counselors, and staff appreciate it more than you will ever know. God Bless you.

We love you Paul!

Paul Newman since 1982 has donated profits from his salad dressings to a panoply of charities. This is precisely what Jesus asked of men.

Great pictures, looks like much fun was had by all! I've always been a fan of Mr. Newman and enjoyed his films. He is a great humanitarian and I support his works by puchasing many of the Newman's Own products. Martha, you look great in the hat! I am a huge fan of yours as well!
Thanks to Mr. Newman and God bless him for all he does for the children.

I admire Paul Newman so much ,as an actor, and a philanthropist. He has done what so many of us have aspired to do; put his money where his mouth is. He is my hero!

What a great cause.
What a great event.
When I make a spaghetti dinner or offer my mini schnauzer a chicken biscuit I will think of the camp and all the wonderful people who continue to do unselfish things for the greater good.

For Paul: From one old Clevelander to another - there's no one on this earth better than you. You are the epitome of what a human being should be and I will always honor and love you.

Thanks very much for sharing the wonderful photographs, Martha. A friend of mine was employed at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for many years and few years ago my husband and I had the good fortune to tour the camp. I cannot tell you what a profound impact the experience had on both my husband and me. Paul Newman is the epitome of benevolence, generosity, and class. Thanks to him for being a shining example of how we should all live our lives.

He is a blessing and I am so happy to see his charity doing so well. I have always supported his charities and love love love all of his products. Great man with a great lady! Praying for him to have a heart of peace and happiness. Praying you too have a relaxing (you?) and fun summer. Soak up the joy of summer Martha, life as we all know it is too short.

Thank you Martha, it's wonderful that you share this with all of us! I've always related to Paul Newman, I hail from N.E. Ohio, (near Cleveland), and my father has always looked so much like Mr. Newman, almost like twin brothers! I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Newman at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia during the early 80's, I remember that Mr. Newman gave his undivided attention to all his fans, including a young fan who was in a wheelchair. I also remember that after each and every fan was satisfied, Mr. Newman hopped onto a small wheeled elevated bicycle and very comically pedaled off into the crowd, it was a real kick, everyone broke up laughing, I'll never forget it! Paul Newman is a great humanitarian! Thanks again for sharing this event with all of us!

thankyou Martha for sharing px from the Auction, esp giving a glipse of Paul Newman. How like him as a person, to attend when obvioiusly from reports he had been ill . As a teenager, I would collect autographed pictures from studios (remember?); had a huge poster in my room of Paul Newman and quite the crush. I still have a bit of a crush, but more a feeling of gratefulness for him existing in our lifetime and his inspiration. thank you so much, Paul Newman.

I am running the NYC Marathon with the Team Hole in the Wall, which is a fund raiser for the Hole in the Wall Camps. I had the honor of visiting the camp in Ashford, CT and it is such an amazing place.I feel honored to be doing just a little to help send a child to this fabulous camp.
Once again, thank you for posting this on your blog!
I pray that Mr. Newman's health isn't as bad as I have read recently, but my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. He is an amazing human being!

I just saw article about you and paul newman. my prayers are with him and his family- He is such a wonderful humanitarian. I have been reading about an ongoing cancer treatment called DCA (dichlorateacetate. there are scientists currently researching it in Alberta, Canada. because chemical is dispensed for another illness, some people have constructed a forum and it sounds like it may be effective for lung cancer.
You and his family are friends, I thought you may want to look into it for him. God Bless.

My dearest Martha,
It was the posting of your picture with Sir Paul Newman, that I found out he was ill. I still hoped that he would pull through. I am saddened by his passing. What a gem of a human being. What a life of distinction and class. The likes of him, very rare. We will miss him. I thank God for blessing us with such a being. The world is in mourning but I know he never wanted sympathy, or pity. He lived a full life. It will take a while, but we will celebrate 83 years of blessings, continue to give of ourselves to the service of goodness in our communities. This will honor his memory. Paul, you will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear about Paul Newman dying after his battle with lung cancer. Thank you for sharing this story about his camp and the pictures in June so we can see him just a few months before he passed away. I have been a fan of his and Joanne's forever. I still have a copy of a speeding ticket he got when he came through Baton Rouge (where I reside) in the 70's because it has his signature on it. Joanne and I are both alumnae of LSU in Baton Rouge. They are truly a wonderful couple, being married 50 years, and giving so much to theatre and charities. Eternal rest grant unto Paul, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

I am saddened by Paul Newman's passing more than I can say.
Those of you lucky enough to have counted him as a friend must feel such an enormous void.
I was never lucky enough to meet Mr. Newman but have held a special place in my heart for him for most of my life.
He will be missed.

I never knew how much I would miss Paul Newman. I never knew how much I loved him and I never knew him personally. But I'm blown away that he is no longer here with us. I always would watch any show or read any article if his name was involved. I would see him on a talk show or hear his voice even if it was for a car no matter, I was always relieved that thank God he is still around. Now I'm deeply hurt and sad that he isn't here anymore. But I'm trying to see it from God's point of view He wants to spend time with his perfect angel now. He was sent here and the great luck he had because God had a special plan for him. He fulfilled the plan so plentiful that God was pleased and said, "Paul come rest with me" and that is the only way I can feel any comfort about him dying. I would not want to imagine what people close to him are feeling, because I am absolutely miserable. (Sorry, but I just have to state my true feelings about the situation.) God bless Pauls' family and friends. Thank you, Marcia from Omaha
