The big season premiere! Exclusive behind the scenes!
Today, of course, is the first episode of the fourth season of my TV show, "The Martha Stewart Show"! We decided to open with something entirely different this year, and we taped this first show at my farm in Bedford. As you can imagine, there was plenty of hustle and bustle and many challenges along the way. Editing can be magical and I am very happy with the outcome. As always, it's great fun to see behind the scenes, so please have a look at these photos and feel free to leave a comment.

I cant wait till tommarow to see the show!! I wish I was there !!!!

Martha, I am so much looking forward to your new season. Have to work this week 10-7 and will miss most of it unfortunately, but today we had a wonderful celebration of summer. My 94 year old mother in law and my 9 month grandson and all inbetween! This in what you are all about and me too! Best luck in the new season and I'll be watching whenever I can.

Thank you for sharing. I love filed trips and I love on location shows. It appears to be a ton of work, so I appreciate it even more. We want to see more of the MARTHA worls, that is why we trust the brand that is why are inspired to buy the many wonderful MS product items. It is all about Martha, our dear wonderful 'domestic goddess'. Take us on the road with Martha anytime.

How exciting it must be. My husband works in production and I once told him I thought it looked like so much fun, so he invited me on a remote shoot. He said he wanted to show me how much fun it could be. I rolled out tons of cable that led to the remote truck. I was so soar. I never really thought the actual production was so much fun after that. I love the outcome though. You make it look so easy.

Hi Martha, The photos in this blog are absolutely fantastic! You have fulfilled a wish of mine. Now I finally feel like I have actually visited some of your beautiful farm! It is so neat to see how much goes into this kind of production away from the studio. You are so kind to share this behind the scenes preview of your Big Season Premier with all of us. IT IS BIG!!! I love all of the photos, but my favorites are: #37 of Francesca and Sharkey, #43 of Dandy and Clover and #41 of the darling chow chow who looks just like Paw Paw!!! I can hardly wait to see your show tommorrow. I have to wait until 1:00PM on CBUT and 3:00PM on KONG. But, it IS worth the wait. I'm going to go back and look at the photos again, so I'll see you tomorrow! Jan

Dear Martha,
With great sadness I regret to say that I won't be able to watch your season premiere because apparently no television station in my market (Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina) has picked up The Martha Stewart Show for the fall 2008 season. I am utterly disappointed with the stations' decision, I might have to upgrade the cable package and get the Fine Living Network now. Love your blog.

Everything for today's opening looks like it was well-organized and well-planned. The food made me so hungry and made me wish I were there. The horses, donkeys, Francesca,Sharkey, Dandy and Clover, and the PawPaw pups looked so happy. Thanks for letting us know and see them up close. I can't wait to watch the entire show today. Thanks for sharing the Katona farm with us. Nan

Hi, Martha,
Thanks for the photos of your taping of the Big season premiere at your farm in Bedford. I was happy to see one of Paw Paw's grandsons and will be glad to find out what you decided about the puppies. Dandy and Clover look so content. Francesca and Sharkey are so cute surveying all the action from up on their perch.
Good luck on your 4th season!

Hi Martha
I can't wait to watch your show today. I have to tape it and watch it after work. Your farm looks beautiful, I would have loved to attend that show. I've put my ticket request in and hope to see the show live soon.
I hope you have 3 Chows to show off and not just 1. Best of luck with the new season.

I am so disappointed that my local tv station is no longer showing the Martha Stewart Show. I look forward for every show. I will no longer be a be able to see your show at 10:00 am.

I have admired your expertise since I bought "Entertaining" when it came out. I would love to see you add a regular segment about the basics of saving money in cooking and homekeeping. Things are hard for most these days, and my 30-40 year old children and their friends, think biscuits "pop out" of a refrigerated cardboard roll. As their mom I don't have the gravitas to make it cool to make the Basic biscuit-muffin-pancake-lowcake that our mom's kept in a starter bowl part of their repetoire. Also making basic cleaners from borax, washing soda, vinegar, soap instead of spray bottles at $4 a piece. I can think of many other things. Thanks for your inspirations, Laura

I was so excited about your new show, but the
WTVC Channel 9 in Chattanooga did not carry your show at 10am. I hope one of the other
tv stations will carry it this afternoon.
Thanks for giving the behind the scenes.

Welcome back, Martha! If this first show is any indication, we have an amazing season of the MSS to look forward to. Your farm is stunning and I was very envious of the audience today. Good luck with your new fluffy little chow. I look forward to seeing this ginger angel puppy on your show and watching it grow.
For those like me who had a reshuffling of stations for MSS, the new stations are listed on the MS website.

Dear Martha,
Thankyou so much for sharing your farm with us. Your show has been a great inspiration for me since I have come late in life to keeping house - you have taught me to tackle the challenge of cooking and my 97 year old mother now loves my meals. I have been a teacher and a farmer - but my farm is nothing like yours, maybe you've set another goal for me!
I'm anxious to see how life goes with your new puppy, I hope you have him on the show.
Thankyou for all you do.

Hi Martha,
Today's show was fabulous! Enjoyed every minute. The grounds are beautiful, like all the stone work, stables are wonderful, would like to have seen the cat's. Your new baby chow is adorable. What a lucky little guy he is!

I saw the Big Show this morning, and it was absolutely fascinating. The most professional care of horses I've ever seen! They are so beautiful. Your farm would be my heaven here on Earth.Hope you let us get to know your new handsome chow puppy, I know you will; and I hope he is another great companion, as was his grandfather. Enjoy your farm and keep feeding the chickens! Nan

I watched your season premiere today, I wouldn't have missed it. It was great. I felt like I was an armchair/sofa guest. I loved your vegetable garden and the fresian horses. I wonder how you could possibly use all the vegetables and berries you grow. Do you have Chef's buy some of your produce?
You picked your new chow chow, I don't know which one out of the three you chose. The three of them had different color leads...yellow, red, and I think pink (?). Congratulations on your new chow chow. Thanks for taking your viewers to the farm in Bedford, NY. I loved the new show.

Of course the food was to die for as always, but the animals, I fell in love with.... I also love the Chow Chow, so cute!
I have followed you for years and even have some of your wonderful books. I just want to comment on how warm and endearing you have become over the years!

(...forewarning, everybody...this might be a l-o-n-g post...I feel it coming on!...)
What a real treat today! - going behind the scenes (of what I'll see tonite) there at your farm! You have (a) tremendous hardscape, to go along with and compliment any and all plantings and natural landscape that you implement! I just love that you choose farm living in your private life and love the outdoors!
The luncheon table was sooooo Martha! - your signature-green/aqua chairs, lining the table to eternity - beautiful!...and the faux bois table covering!...all of your favorite things, obviously, which we ourselves have come to absolutely love! Francesca and Sharkey are indeed endearing little "hams" and are not at all camera-shy (but if they're not careful, they'll get their tootsietoes all wet in the birdbath!) Dandy and Clover - well, they were my "picks" of the Herefords' names! The donkeys, the horses - all the animals - I just love them all! (And) I'm sure with this new season coming on, alot of things will come to fruition in which we've been in suspense all summer long!
I can't imagine what orchestration took place just for this one episode's taping! If I'd've been an audience guest for this show, I'd've absolutely been beside myself, like, somebody, pinch me!...pinch me NOW!
Tonite's rundown: go home, eat, fill the birdbaths, water the "pots", rewind Martha, then watch (savor e-v-e-r-y moment!) (OH! I forgot...pet the cats, too! =^..^= )
...can't wait!
=^..^=

(P.S. to my aforementioned post...I forgot to mention the following:)
It's wonderful to see many "new" posts today regarding your season premiere! It's good to see my familiar fellow-bloggers, too, (I look for them each and every day) but it's good to see some new "faces" in the "fan club"!
=^..^=

Please do more shows like today. It was by far the best show!!! I have always enjoyed your shows, but I especially like the more personal ones. Tours of your gardens, a certain room in one of your homes, your table settings and arrangements for your guests, your outdoor living room, your kitchens, etc. are all more exciting and your learn so much about things to make that room or place better.
Posted by: Fran | September 15th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Martha, god bless you, your home and farm are lovely, you deserve such peace. Good luck on the new season! I have you on timed recorded events:)

Hi Martha,
I really enjoyed the tour of your farm on today's show! What a beautiful place, the happy animals, beautiful garden areas, great food. What fun you must have living there! Thanks for the tour!
Posted by: Debbie Reko | September 15th, 2008 at 9:58 am
I think it would be so much fun to see a live shoot! I would probably drive the crew crazy with questions but everything looks so interesting. Thanks so much for telling us the names of the Herefords and they are very cute names.
I get the show at 1:00 p.m. but couldn't watch until later due to lost luggage problems but no matter, it was worth the delay! You have so much responsibility and so many great ideas I don't know how you do it all! But I'm glad that you do what you do and share it with us too. (Not trying to be a poet here!) Your exercise room is to die for!
The people in your audience were so lucky to be there today. I'm jealous! Well, see you tomorrow; I just know it's going to be a great season. Trish

Dearest Martha,
I felt so awful learning about your mother has passed on. I always enjoyed watching her with you on your show. I admire you very much for having such admiration and a very loving relationship with her. I never had a good relationship with my mother, thats why everytime I see her on your show I wish I could do the same kindness with my mother. The support she gave you during your troubled years are priceless.
I am very sorry for the loss of your lovely mother. I did not know till today.
Sincerely,
Ellen

Love the chefs and pups! I taped the show but missed the end and will tonight what PawPaw grandson you chose. Gosh they were so cute!!
Does your show repeat on Lifetime anymore? I know Alexis' show starts tomorrow. Tell her good luck or should I say "break a leg!"
Also, one idea, on your print friendly recipes..is there anyway you can have the ads not there to save ink?
Thanks for all your inspiration! You look rested and ready for another terrific season! Best of luck!

I hope you do more shows from your farm, as it is so beautiful. Did you pick out your puppy? Can you tell us more about it?

Technical or cable issues caused a problem with my recording of the program. Is there any way to rebroadcast it? Also, I think many people probably did not know about the change in time.
Posted by: Mary Ann Laun | September 15th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Martha,
I wish that I could visit and photograph your beautiful property, but until then please keep showing us what you have done to develop this property. In its way, the property probably rivals Versaille which I have visited.
I was thoroughly impressed by your stables. Although I myself do not own a horse, I do know many people who own horses. I am sure that they could all learn from your expertise in horse-keeping how to better care for their horses. I suggest that you publish something that would teach those who own horses.

Hey Martha!
I finally found your show by accident this morning. Seriously, i figured it was gone or put on in the middle of the night - I was happy to find you on another channel, but it was at the very end of the show. The puppy is so adorable and almost made me cry just thinking of paw-paw. I hope to catch the repeat so i can see the majestic horses.
I am so glad i found your show again! I hope you do a show on how to be prepared when you lose power....after this weekend i think we all need to be ready.
Take care,

Martha
I found shades of the old Martha show format with the season 4 premiere . Loved seeing the chow pus, maybe you could take two of them and have on live at Skylands!
Loved seeing Joey from The Little Owl, he was so nice to me and my friends when we came to NYC last year to see your show and eat at his place.
Would like to see more of the farm in future Martha's so much more to see in depth with your staff there.
You looked well and relaxed, so happy to see you -I have missed you.I watched you this AM on The Today Show, looking forward to your visit to Conan tomorrow night!
I feel in love today Martha - with yor farm & animals....AGAIN!
You are most blessed with good health, home and your animals and a most busy and interesting life, and you look fab!

DEAR MARTHA,
I COULD ALMOST SMELL THE BARBECUE YOU WERE COOKING TODAY
FROM YOUR FARM IN BEDFORD. I
LOVED THE STONE BUILDINGS THE
BEST. THEY LOOKED GREAT.
THE CHOW WAS SOOOO CUTE. AND THE
CHAIRS THE AUDIENCE HAD, LOOKED
LIKE A WEDDING PARTY ALMOST.
JUST LIKE I WAS INVITED TOO.
LOVE, YOU,

I loved this episode. Martha, I enjoyed watching how involved you are in your home and surroundings. It seems idyllic, but was inspiring to see how much actual work goes into making it so beautiful. Your vegetable garden is absolutely wonderful! It is one of my greatest joys to be out and about in my own garden. Thanks for the inspiration!
Posted by: Erin | September 15th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Loved the shot of trying to get your cat to pose. Is that something you knew could be done? Did Vivaldi agree to your assestment?
I can not praise you and the people with your show enough.
I on the other hand I can not think of a single postive thing to say regarding the local stations that do not carry your excellent show. Nor can I say much more for the off beat channels that do have your show but do not broadcast with enough power so we can view it.
It is a joy to see the pictures. Thanks.

Why all these stations fiddle around with the new dreck that comes on every year -- then quickly and mercifully disappears again -- is beyond me. Martha and her shows are American icons that will last for a very long time to come.
Please television programmers, spare us the Tony Danzas, Rachel Rays and Bonnie Hunts. We are not amused.
I am so grateful that Martha's program is on here in Pittsburgh every day to provide a positive influence on society.

Congratulations on the new season! I love all of the behind the scene photos of what it takes to put on a production. I see that you use a Lex Products distro box for your power distribution. Those are the best. I'm a freelance lighting tech for an event production company as well as running three entertainment based resource websites. I love running the power for events.
Do you also use their three phase doghouses? I see in the photo with Francesca and Sharkey you use the same steel pipe bases that we do for our lighting trees. Very nice. Look forward to seeing more behind the scenes of your beautiful farm. Still holding out that all three of the little boys will be with you. : )

Worth the wait. Martha, the only repetitive dream I have ever had in my life (I'm only 28) Has been the same, I got the opportunity to visit your house (house's). Even rode my favorite breed of horse!!!! With you of course!! Weird? I dunno, but the episode was almost magical for me!!!! I love your style, your animals are breathtaking and your house was above my expectations. You are so blessed to live in such a gorgeous setting. Happy 4th season!! Martha,
I've always loved seeing you with chows and especially loved today's segment with all three of Paw Paw's chowlets. I just wanted to wish you a very happy life with whichever one you choose. They are all so precious. I lost my beloved chow, Chelsea, after almost 15 1/2 years. together, this past January. Seeing you with your chow babies has given me hope that I'll have a precious chow again someday, too.

Martha,
When I first started watching you my son was little. I watched your show each day eagerly to learn how to care for my home and family. I have a wonderful garden, beautiful home, with delicious family dinners. So much I have learned from you! Today was so special seeing you in the garden, those were always my favorite segments from the old show. It was wonderful to see you at home. PLEASE continue to do more shows like this, it was fantastic!! I loved seeing all the animals too!

Ms. Stewart,
I have several offices to decorate for the holidays. I would be most appreciative of any websites; shows; etc... that you could share with me. Thanks in advance.
Very respectfully,

Hi Martha:
Finally some new Martha, I am so sick of Sarah Palin! Will be watching out for your featuring your lovely dogs and pet information as I have a dog blog. I feature news on new research with pets, and natural remedies that are inexpensive and good for your dogs. Say hi to Franchesca...

Hi Martha,
What a fantastic way to start the day! Your show is now on in my area at 9:00AM, your first show of the season was well worth the wait. I so enjoyed seeing your farm, animals, scenery and chefs. The blog+photos made me a little more aware of the herculean efforts that go into doing a "remote" shoot. Thank you SO much for your efforts to teach us the many things you do!! Best wishes for the new season.

I was getting so excited about your new season, but when I went to watch it was not our local CBS station at 9 AM. I just found out you moved to Fine Living channel & am excited about the new season. I love your show and all the great information that you provide to your viewers. Thanks again,

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us! The grounds are gorgeous! I wonder if you have considered a prairie/native grass area? They are so beautiful and you'd be amazed at the bird, insect and other wildlife it attracts! Great for your honeybees too! Please consider an historic native prairie and/or grass garden!! And thanks again for the tour.

several years ago we met at the Detroit Historical Society luncheon. Martha, you were gracious enough to sign my photo "to my best friend, Diane, love, Martha" always a treasured momento of a lovely afternoon.
after watching the opening show i decided that is not enough, i MUST come back as one of your horses. your home, grounds are not to be believed but that stable........could there be luckier horses on the face of the earth?
good for you martha, your hard work and diligence is evident in everything you do.
let us see more of the 'farm'

Hi Marth,
I'm so excited. Looking at my guide today I found your show! It's now on channel 9(Fox) still at 11:00am! I can't wait to see your show today. Do you think yesterday's show will air again? I'd love to see it. Thank-You for all the wonderful good things you do. Take Care

Hi Martha,
I enjoyed your 1st show of the new season. I will look for your new show on FLN with your daughter and friend expecially since the President interrupted the program. You were gracious today in your comment about that. I am sort of wondering if Bush has a "chip on his shoulder" against you or something as he just always seems to interrupt your program hour to address the Nation about something. Half the time his interruptions seem to be, like, why is he coming on, at least half the time anyway.
I have just a little bone to pick here, however, with you and Oprah. And that is, when you give everyone in the audience things why is the home viewer never given a chance to receive some of these wonderful gifts? I know you can't give your audience giveaways to everyone viewingm but perhaps there could be some way, like the old fashioned drawing through the internet or mailing in a chance to win something via snail mail. Or, if you leave your phone # and if they are called at home and they answer, or something like that. When shows like Oprah have their big audience giveaways and she says "and everyone in the whole audience is getting (whatever)!" I am there "yawn", or what else is on. When you do it, I am there, "that's nice" but what about the home viewer? Anyway -- that's my beef with these "everyone in the whole audience gets a ...".

Friesians - yesterday's show
Hi Martha -
I was fortunate to ask you what sex Friesian to buy on "Ask Martha" in November 2005. I have a wonderful 16H gelding who is 7 years old.
Kate Wilson is also my saddle expert. I heard on the show that you "dry shampoo" your horses and use mane oil. I would love to know what that product is for dry shampoo - and also, the mane oil.
Honestly - my horse is the most amazing creature. Thank you for your advice. We are at Training Level in Dressage and he is doing very well.
Best,
Scott

I watched your show yesterday afternoon and fell in love with your farm. What a beautiful place. It seems so restful and comforting. What a spectacular job you (and your people) have done.

I watched your first day with great anticipation and I think I had a huge grin on my face the entire time. Your home/farm is stunning and cannot be suitably described so I recorded the show so my husband could see it.
I don't know how you motivate to leave in the morning. From your work outs, to gardening, to the stables. Unbelievable. You can also see how truly dedicated your staff are. You must be a wonderful person to work for/with for them to give so much of themselves.
I was also thrilled to see your new baby. They were all so adorable. He will surely be loved and pampered, as well he should be
Looking forward to the new season!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures of the farm and the miniature herfords and the paw paw grandchild. I was so looking forward to the show Monday but of course the winds began to blow at 70 mph as Ike passed through Indiana and our electric went out. Then a 150 yr old Maple tree went down in our yard and took down all utility lines. But thank goodness the brave electrical lineman have been out 24/7 getting things repaired and we got our electric back last night. Of course this was nothing close to what people are still going through along the costal areas. I'll be sure and catch the re-run.

How can I find out more about the computers Martha was demonstrating, i.e. one was with the horses, in the season premiere?

Martha your new season opener (Monday) was such a delight,I thank God I recorded it,cause I keep playing it back in case I missed something great. The barns, the HORSES,the ADORABLE SWEET BABY CHOWS,...almost too much wrapped up in one hour!
I so love it when you share your home life with us...I NEVER MISS THOSE SHOWS!!! Please keep them coming,...I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THOSE BEAUTIFUL HORSES,keep showing us more. I had to put my adorable male Chinese Shar-pei down after 15 grand years with him,I can relate to how you felt after losing Paw Paw.I too am searching for a new Chinese Shar-pei pup;..know of a reputable breeder??? All the best Martha,we love you here in Canada!!! Margaret Mironenko (Moncton,New Brunswick CANADA)

Hi Martha-
Good Luck on your new season! I enjoy watching your show, as I enjoy The Rachael Ray show - I love you both for different reasons... I would love to see both you and Rachael get over your pettiness and come together and respect one another for each of your unique talents and how you inspire so many people... I would love to see you both on EACH others shows... could that ever be possible?

Hi Martha,
I thought I'd finally say "hello". I've been following you since "Entertaining" was given to me by a friend that said to me "you'll enjoy this". I have.. and most of your instruction since that first book.
You certainly have been through some trials, and I admire your ability to still smile, share with us, and keep teaching..we all need a little basic "Martha".
Your new estate is beautiful..thanks again for sharing. Wishing you well and hoping your family appreciates you as much as we do.

This is just like the early Martha days. Outdoors, at your home, with experts. Who wants to hear from celebrity's?
Please, don't go back to the studio...

And they called it Puppy Love...... Martha congrats on you new pup! Went back in the blogs and saw the photos of all three. You sure look "in love"
It's always nice to have love for just one more pup =-)

I am so sad to say I have not seen a single episode since the season started on the 15th. The show moved to 11am. I get my 2 and 4 yo down for 'quiet time' at 1pm and flip on the boob tube to see what you are up to and then remember the time has changed. D'oh! I have to reprogram myself. Hope to see you on tv soon!

YES!!! I am HAPPY to say, after calling Suddenlink Cable a couple of times and emailing them, I am finally able to watch your show again!!! Now the show is scheduled for 1PM on channel 168 (Greenville, NC) (instead of 11AM on 168 last season). After watching MARTHA for the last few years, and now missing out on the new season shows, I have been going into "withdrawl" these past two weeks! THANK YOU!! LOVE You, and, again, thank you, Martha, for your positive energy & resources.

Martha, I was looking so forward to the show on the 14th; I couldn't wait to see! On September 13th, our county (in Indiana) was hit with the remnants of Hurricane Ike. We lost all power for 5 days, so I missed the show. Hopefully, it will re-air at some point. It looked like fun from the photos you have shared.

Dear Martha,
Hello, how are you? I am suffering from the "Miss the Martha Show." Here it is already October and I know your fabulous Halloween shows are coming up and I still cannot see it because the CW network here in Denver did not pick up your show this new season! I am so bitter and just not a happy camper! I am still trying to get Fine living! Why does this happen now, when money is so tight!!!
