Halloween Special behind the scenes!
If you didn’t see yesterday’s Halloween special of the Martha show, then you missed a really fun time. As usual, the TV crew did an amazing job of decorating and this year’s theme was all about statuary, many living and many not. I was dressed as Medusa, who was notorious for turning those who looked at her into stone. Come and have a look at these photos.

I thought it was a great show. I've always been fascinated by those "living statues." Your Medusa hair was amazing!

The snakes were beautiful. I was wondering what they were made of and how heavy the headdress was to wear.

Your costume is fantastic as usual! I also loved the show on how you decorated your stables for the dinner. I posted some photos of my boys over the years...the Mummy was a good one that was easy. This year it was raining and we kept things simple...but I am on the lookout for clear plastic umbrellas so we can be a school of bubble wrap jellyfish the next wet Halloween. You posted that costume on your web page and I love it!

The living statues were fantastic! I've seen them in European cities and they are always amazing. My little boys watched your show and were stupefied. "How do they make the statues move?" When they learned they were real people they would laugh uproariously at the movements. Sammy said it was the "funnest" show you've ever had because of those living statues.
I made the pumpkin marble cake and took it to our Reformation celebration at church. I drizzled it with chocolate ganache. It was moist and delicious. Great recipe.

Martha,
I was lucky enough to be a part of the studio audience for the LIVE Halloween show. In fact I was one of the statues of Liberty. The set was FANTASTIC, and your crew did a WONDERFUL job! They were kind, helpful and made sure everyone was happy. They truly are a great group of people. We had a lot of fun, but I was dissapointed that I didn't get to meet you and have a photo with you. I do realize that it would have taken you a long time afterwards... but I am such a big fan, that it would have been an unbelievable experience for me and my family.

I was lucky enough to attend the show yesterday with my Mom & sister. We all had a wonderful time. Martha looked wonderful in person & I loved the graveyard with the owls & snow.
Thanks...

The Devil's Food cake looked sooo delicious that I made it this morning (Nov. 1) for my 65th birthday tomorrow. It turned out just perfect and I put a fresh yellow rose on the top. It was a "good" thing (not "bad")!! Thanks for the inspiration and fantastic recipe!

Hi Martha, Thanks for blogging about your fabulous Halloween show at a time when I know you are extremely busy with your book tour, etc. It was so great to see last year's show on Thursday and this new show on Friday. You looked so great as Medusa and Blake Lively was really cute a Cleopatra. I was in awe of the living statues, especially the way they were able to remain so still for so long. Your audience was also great. How appropriate to make a marble cake on your statuary show! Loved watching your Thanksgiving Special on FLN today. Was so great to see your mom make her delicious cabbage perogies {sp}. She was the best! Have a great weekend. Jan

Martha, the Halloween special this year was just as fantastic as ever. Your headpiece was awesome.
Eva did a great job as usual.
I am in awe of the living statues. I have seen many of them in person, but these looking like pure marble really made them phenomenal. Even looking at the photographs on your blog is unreal to me.
Hope you had a great Halloween!

I loved seeing the still photos of this year's costumes. Unfortunately for those of us in the Philadelphia, PA area your Halloween show was preempted by the six hour long (televised on all major channels) victory parade for our great Phillies baseball team celebrating their winning of the World Series. Is it possible for you to rerun that episode sometime, or upload it to your website? I also don't have cable tv.
Thanks.

I have recently become a stay at home mother with a new baby and have become an avid Martha watcher! The Halloween show was great with awesome ideas and costumes! I missed how to get some of those wonderful Martha M&Ms. Could I get that information?

Those live statues are great - we have a few street performers in Vegas that are just amazing.

Martha, you look supremely wicked! A fantastic costume and a wonderful show. I never miss your Halloween show.

Martha,
Hearing you talk about the book, Bats in the Library, reminded me of an incident that took place in the library of one of our schools. Sadly that didn't end on a happy note. I weote the folowing poem to commemerate the incident.
Murder at the Main Street School
He didn’t know he broke a rule
Making his home in the Main Street School
Where it was cozy and warm
Only coming out at night
To take an occasional hunting flight
Couldn’t possibly do any harm
But his adventure was fleeting
When he flew over the meeting
And landed on top of the case
For a man misinformed
Across the room stormed
With a determined look on his face
Poor little bat
His life ended in a splat
Under a library book
The man standing near
Knowing only prejudice and fear
Hardly gave a second look
Now all of the insects that would have been lunch
Will multiply into quite a bunch
And one can only wish
That they follow the man
Who held the book in his hand
And find him a tasty dish

Stunning statues! When going to museums I like to pose with statues. One of my best was being with a terracotta statue. Thanks for the great photos because I missed the show. Jennifer

Ms. Stewart,
During a conversation with Rosie O'Donnell on your Hallowe'en episode, you both expressed a wish for hybrid vehicles to be larger. I am writing to let you know that your wish has come true!
GM has hybrids in ever class of vehicles, even the Cadillac Escalade comes as a hybrid.
I drive a 2008 GMC Yukon hybrid, and love it for it's size, power, fuel flexiblity and efficiency.
I hope this information is useful to you.
Regards,
Ms. Sandra Shamas

Thanks, Martha and everyone involved making the show so fun. The theme and ability to carry it out in such great form was a true treat for us to watch. The actors or live statues need to be praised for the skills they have that I do not.
Thanks again.

That's the best costume I've ever seen! I watched Clash of the Titans: Perseus vs medusa a few months ago. The special effects are awesome.

AWESOME costume, Martha! I am curious to know how the snake headdress was made because I would love to be this for Halloween next year. You looked great and the living statues were very cool, too.

I loved all the halloween shows. I have M.S. and the past week has been a really bad one. I felt better yesterday and went to Kroger to get a copy of Octobers' Living and was told they were pulled on the 20th of October. I was so upset!!! Is there any way to get a copy from the publisher? I called everyone in the yellowpages to no avail. I have all the shows on my DVR but there is nothing to compare to the magazine in my hand. I am willing to pay the back issue price and shipping. I will also be subscribing to Living (after paying bills). Due to medical bills and lack of income I have had to give up many of the things I use to enjoy but "Living" will no longer be one of those pleasures. The shows were so great and if I don't my laundry out of the dryer NOW I will be late to the beginning of todays' show. Besides my 16.5# cat is waiting for her warm sheets (which much smell like vanilla or she will not sleep with me).OH YES SHE IS A DIVA!!!!
"MY LITTLE (16.5# LONG HAIR DIVA) ANGEL" IS NOW GLARING AT ME SO OFF I GO TO ENABLE HER.

Martha, you look great as always. Your costumes are always so cool. I love Halloween. And over the years I've found that you love it too.

Martha, you have helped me rediscover my love of Halloween over the years and I thank you for the great crafts, recipes and shows. This year Halloween themed show wasn't my favorite, but the set and your costume looked fantastic. I prefer to go to the darkside on Halloween, but it goes to show how many facets the holiday can inspire. Here's hoping you come out with a second volume of the Halloween book!

Dear Martha,
I really think you should consider auditioning for the leading role of the play "Madwoman of Chaillot". As you probably know, casting of such a wonderful part is extremely difficult.

Unfortunately, in my area right before Halloween they took the Martha show off our local NBC channel, now it is on only at 8pm on another channel, but the whole family has other plans for the TV then!!
I miss you, Martha, I so enjoyed watching you and the surprises you came up with everyday. I esp loved the cooking and craft and gardening sections.
Catch you when I can!
Pam
