A visit to the fabulous Orchid show at the NYBG
I was so happy the other day to find enough time to stop in at the 7th annual orchid show held at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx of New York City. Running through April 6th, the orchid show is displayed in the majestic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the nation's largest Victorian glasshouse, so named for Ms. Haupt, a philanthropist, who helped pay for its restoration in the 1970's. This year's incredible show was designed by Raymond Jungles, a Miami-based landscaped architect. Jungles was inspired by his mentor, Roberto Burle, Marx, an iconic Brazilian artist. There are over 30,000 species of orchids in the world today and quite amazingly, this show boasts more than 6,000 species alone. Please feast your eyes on the splendor.

My husband and I live about 30 minutes from Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. It is the site of a former DuPont family estate. The outdoor area is quite large. It also has a huge conservatory with a spectacular orchid room among many other rooms. The conservatory is quite refreshing on a cold winter day, and equally entrancing at other times.

Lovely, or rather Gorgeous, wth a capital G, there are so many of us here and a few we are missing-Jan- that think you lead us where we all need to go. What a pleasant experience. Our spirits are with you whenever you tour such wonders.
Thank you for showing us things we all love, believe in and wish to savor.

Thank you so much for a tour of the orchid show. I am not able to attend the show this year and I can't thank you enough for posting these beautiful pictures.
I started growing orchids, under one set of lights, many years ago and have always enjoyed their beauty.
I am so thrilled that orchids have come out of the mist of exclusivity and are prolific everywhere.
My mother loves them and my teenage daughter also gives them a nod. They are for everyone.
Your pictures are all truly spectacular.

Very beautiful display and the conservatory is sooo splendid! when i was a child, my mom used to take me to the conservatory in Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Canada to see all the exotic plants. Well, you can imagine that everything seemed exotic in this conservatory since winters are very cold and long!

Hi Martha,
Love, love, love orchids! Can't, can't, can't grow them or even keep them around very long though. They don't like me!
So thanks for the great pictures; there are so many varieties - I had no idea. Trish

I loved seeing these pictures. I used to live nearby the NYBG and miss it very much (I live in Seattle now). It was lovely to have such a loving tour and such beautiful pictures!

Thank you so much, Martha, for sharing the pictures of those BEAUTIFUL orchids! I'm growing phalaenopsis and am excited to have my first blooms (other than the ones the plants came with) this year!! I've also been to Longwood Gardens in Penn. It is well worth the trip!! The orchid room smells delightful!

Thanks for posting the photos of the orchid show at the NY Botanical Gardens. The flowers looked magnificent. I live in PA and visited Longwood Gardens last year for their orchid show but I must say from the pictures, this certainly surpassed the Longwood show. The walls of orchids were amazing. If this show runs through April 6th, I may head up north back to my old neck of the woods in NY. Makes me want to quit my present job and get back into floral design! Thanks Martha!

Hi Martha, What a beautiful blog about orchids! Like other commenters, I find orchids to be especially beautiful in colors, sizes and shapes. Your photos are absolutely stunning and I would love to grow all of those wonderful varieties. I have to add the New York Botanical Gardens to my list of must visits whenever I get to New York City. When I was at Costco a couple of weeks ago, they had some beautiful orchids for sale. If they still have them next time I go, I may splurge and buy one and see If I have any luck growing an orchid. Once again you have inspired me to try something new. Thanks for all you do. Jan
