Last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Last night I made an appearance on The Tonight Show and it's always so much fun chatting with Jay Leno. He was asking me about my plans for Arbor Day, about my rather large compost pile, and he was especially interested to hear that I have been hit by lightning three times! The main reason for my appearance was to promote the new Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts and, of course, Jay got a lesson in crafting. If you missed last night's episode, you can see it right here, right now. Enjoy!
Here I am talking about being struck by lightning.
Crafting with Jay

I'm SO glad you posted this, I missed it and haven't reached for my DVR control yet this morning. Now I get to watch this with my morning coffee and email catch up.
And struck by lightning??? I never knew. Ouch.

I loved you on Jay last night! You were very funny and I learned something that I did not know about you.

Did the lightning strike give you your home decor and design super powers?
Posted by: braxto | April 21st, 2009 at 9:51 am
I got cracked up when you were talking about your Ex and how the lightning did not kill you. I am amazed that you have lived through it!
Posted by: Mindy Choate | April 21st, 2009 at 9:53 am
Painting with leaves is very crafty, getting hit by lightning three times is either super lucky or really bad karma

You and Jay kept me in stitches! Though I think you're funnier than he is...
Posted by: Ashley Bushfield | April 21st, 2009 at 10:03 am
So funny! I am in Europe and missed it. So thanks for putting it up. Loved the husband joke and the 'now I got a ruined piece of cloth' by Leno at the end. Hehe!
Posted by: Elvira | April 21st, 2009 at 10:06 am
I loved the part about killing the roosters, the females being much happier without them...
Jay was acting like a whinning child regarding the botanical prints, you would think you were forcing him to clean his room. You maintained your composure and class despite his protests. Well done.

Hysterical!! You two need a Broadway show together!
Fascinating that you were awakened 3 times like that - it's all good.
Keep twittering!

I am also listed as EllieAmoroso and EllieGreen.
Saw the Jay Leno show and thought you were great. I have been receiving your magazine for years. Great ideas and I have copied so many of your crafts for holidays. Your performance last night with Jay was wonderful. Need to see you more on those talk shows. I know you are busy with your show. When I was staying with my friend in Westport, CT - I did see your old house but it was sold at that time. Still looked nice. Have a great week. ciao!

Good Morning MARTHA,
I loved it. You showing JAY how to craft was adorable. You seem to have a way of making things look interesting and complicated things look easy. Oh my, you have been hit by lightning a few times and you are still here because you have a purpose in life. One of them being, with your line of products, making things available for the middle class which would otherwise not be available.
THANKS MARTHA!
SAUSS, XOXOXOXO

I LOVED your appearance. You are so hip Martha: twittering, crafting, helping ppl through tough economic times. Tracy and Jay were so not on the new-technology-bandwagon! My favorite line: "Why would I lie about a silly thing like that." ...on being 'electrocuted'.
Great job M!

Hey I saw you on Jay Leno and I laughed about the part of the lightning because I have a sister named Gale who was also struck by it the way you were and survived but you reminded me of her. I bet that you do not like storms anymore after that incident. Hey you were great on Jay Leno and I appreciate seeing a different side of you. You were funny Martha and you rocked on Jay Leno, I am a fan of yours and I follow you on Twitter. Keep on keep on Martha you are quite the most interesting person.

Come to South Florida and let's do a tropics show together. My partner and I invite you to film our tropical backyard. Golden bamboo, Birds of Paradise, Heliconia, Mango and much much more. Martha Stewart and Jay Leno! Two of my favorite entertainers! It just doesn't get any better than that! FYI, my dentist has been struck by lightning twice; once on the golf course and once while out walking with his wife (She was not hit.) It left him with naturally curly hair and that is NOT a joke!

I too was struck by lightening 3 times. I,like you was inside my home at the time. Now I respect storms and don't take them lightly. All 4 of the dogs(Poms)have to be IN MY LAP when there is thunder...poor babies.

Great show Martha! I didn't know that anyone could be struck by lightning and live. The person whom I'm named after was struck by lightning while riding her horse. It killed them both. I think you're very lucky to be alive. That was a funny show. Great idea with the leaves. Looks like a lot of fun!

I laughed...you and Jay were wonderful together!
He was such the typical man. But he did it anyway...but he was honest. You had such patience with helping him... I loved it all. Laughter is good medicine.

I enjoyed it because you seem more relaxed when you aren't doing your own show. Plus, when your other encyclopedia was out about repairs and how to do just about everything, I bought eight books and gave them for Christmas presents. My father enjoyed the book more than anyone! So this one will be a wedding gift for my neice who is a crafter and photographer. She'll really enjoy it.

Martha, you are a MESS! (a wonderful mess), and Jay is too! Gee whiz, I hadn't known you'd been struck by lightning, and so many times! Being an admitted weather geek (and so many other things! [giggle] ), I really have come to respect lightning as I've gotten older. I been known to continue mowing during a thunderstorm, just so I could 'get done', but now, I think I'm more prone to reconsider!
Sounds like your trip to California over the weekend was fun and productive. I know, without a doubt, they (Borders and your fans) were pleased to have you as their guest.
I'm always glad, though, when you return back home, knowing you are safe-n-sound.

What did Tracy say, I didn't understand any of that either???? I remember reading in the book Being Martha how you were zapped while on a fishing boat in SF during filming your first show and how you were in pain but finished the taping and then went to the hospital to be checked out, water in your boot and the zap just missed your heart went through your body and out your toe. Jay didn't let you finish that story.
Well, you sure had some HOT weather out here in sunny California didn't you!
I hope your visit to my beautiful state will encourage you to buy that horse ranch here in little wine country central coast CA LOL!!!
I wish you had posted the entire JELLO blooper to Youtube or here on The Martha Blog, there was a lot more to that segment!

Hi Martha,
I greatly enjoyed your "shocking story" on Leno!!! You should invest in a mini lighting rod and take it with you in bad weather! LOL
Seriously, your show is very informative with a weatlh of information for all people. I don't know if you had any contests for low cal recipes? I would love to see a show like that. Please let me know if you are going to have a contest. Many people might like that challenge.
PS - Congrats on your new book!

Hi Martha!!! I loved you on Jay Leno last night! You were in top form as Jay always tried to 'turn the tables' on your composure!! One thing struck me as you and Jay were talking about 'crafts' and their importance in these tough times... and Jay made the comment about crafts and his collection of cars and I thought "not many women has the means to have a hobby like his"... although, he has one car in his collection that I would love to 'take a spin in'.... I know he's got better cars than this but his '56 Buick convertible was like one from my teen years... so many memories! Martha, do you have any 'vintage cars'?
anyhow, not that you would need to, but, if you've been hit by lightening that many times, maybe you could thwart the powers that be and play the lottery??? Might just be the needful thing to change the course of those lightening bolts!!! hahahaha! Seriously, I thinking getting hit by lightening once would be frightening! How can you not be scared out of your wits after being hit numerous times???

How crazy about the lightning! I'm sure glad you survived it way back then because otherwise there would be a great number of things I wouldn't know how to do in the kitchen and home

Great show! A friend of mine told me that she heard you were a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Is this true? If so, which host do you prefer: Mike or Joel?

Saw you on Jay. Lightening, you've got to be the toughest woman I know of. My house got hit by lightening and that was bad enough. You were lots of fun on Jay. I think you're just getting better and better everyday!

you were wonderful as always - Jay was a hoot - your story was most shocking.(smile)

Hi Martha,
It's always so much fun watching Jay trying to create one of your wonderful designs, you can tell he really enjoys having you on his show! Thank you for all the years of your fabulous creativity!

I always wondered how you have the energy to keep the schedule you have and be so creative in so many fields.
Lightning strikes, divorce happens (all for the best) and you build an Empire of Creatitivity, an example for ALL women! I really admire you.

Very Funny ! Just what I needed this has been a very bad day and I needed a laugh.

I always enjoy watching you, but not when you are with people who obviously(to a viewer) do not appreciate your talents.(eg., Charles G., who was on your television show)
Please stay away from people who would like to take you down, particularly when they are trying to promote something of themselves and nothing else!

the story about your lightning experience was astonishing, truly a wonder of nature.
{Martha, I really don't believe your (X) Husband wishes that on you!}
Seeing you work the crafts with Jay Leno was very refreshing...loved the relaxed humor of it all, it suits you well Martha.

I had gotten your "tweet", but had missed your appearance on Jay Leno last night. Thank you, Martha, for posting the videos. That was the first time I have heard you share about the lightning incident - what a close call! I loved watching you guide Jay through the project. Looks like you and he had a great time. He's a good sport and finds humor in just about every situation. You are both gifted with outstanding creativity. I look forward to reading your new Encyclopedia of Crafts (I like origami / paper crafts). All the best to you!

I don't know, Martha. . .you seem to be giving yourself away on Twitter. Clearly your comments on today's show were taped *before* you appeared on Leno and had dinner with friends.

Something about you and lightning, Martha! There was a post about your tree being struck in March, and now 3 strikes for you. Better be careful. Remember the movie, "Powder"?

You're one of my favorite people to watch in such situations. One never knows what you're going to say. It's rarely disappointing.

I just wanted to thank you Martha for having the Etsy shop owner from the Black Apple on your show. I live in a city where there really isn't a year round venue for selling my items. I caught the show several months ago when the two of you made dolls she sold in her shop.
Well I immediatly set up my own shop and now 6 months or so later I have my shop filled with many of my items and I just wanted to thank you. I had not heard of Etsy until I watched your show.
Saw you on Leno the other night! I must say I loved those beads you were wearing. It looked like you had a lot of fun! You really have done it all from cooking to crafts to the clink to electric charges!

Hi Martha, What a fabulous time you had on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno!!! That was one of your best appearances!!! He is so much fun and the two of you together are fabulous!!! Your lightening strikes are amazing. I was only hit once and that was on a small lake near Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls, Idaho. I was standing on a raft close to the shore when it struck. That was back in 1948 and I can't remember the details, but I wasn't hurt. Jan

I loved your interview! You're always full of surprises. And The Killers are my favorite band so it was doubly good!
When will you invite them on your show? You know the singer grows peas in his backyard in Nevada, right?

Aloha! I saw you on Leno and GREAT NEWS! There is a composter for meat, poultry, bones, etc. "The Digestor" is a cone shaped composter that goes into the groud (and nourishes the soil around it as compost develops) and the cones sit on top of the ground where you put your scraps in (no danger of animal intrusion). Southington, Conn. uses this and encourages their residents to as well. Email me if you would like more information--I just learned about it this week from tourists from CT!--Amanda

Hilarious! Your surprise witty remark at the end of your "lightning" story made me laugh... and carved a smile on my face!
Always enjoyable and entertaining to watch you navigate the tricky and sometimes perilous skies of late night talk.
