Introducing my new beautiful kittens
About a month ago, two new kittens came into my life. These adorable dominant calico Persians were born on May 11th and exactly four months later, their breeder, Pam Rutan Dillmuth of Top Shelf Persians, topshelfpersians@aol.com delivered them to my home. I became aware of this breeder when my friend, Grace Coddington, the Creative Director of Vogue, used some of Pam's cats in a photo shoot for the magazine. These three-color calicos are extraordinarily beautiful creatures and Top Shelf Persians is well known in the world of cats. Empress Tang and Princess Peony have acclimated nicely to their new home and are so joyful, as only kittens can be.
1 Here are my new kittens Empress Tang and Princess Peony.
2 Look at Pam's denim jacket! This spells serious cat lover!
3 Pam introducing one little beauty
4 And her sister - another beauty
5 Of course, Francesca and Sharkey were very curious to know what was in the cat carrier.
6 Lots of sniffing going on!
7 Bartok is a bit wary of new cat smells in the house.
8 Up in the craft room, Verdi approaches the carrier with caution.
9 Vivaldi tries to act as though nothing is happening.
10 Pam is having a tearful goodbye.
11 Empress Tang is hiding behind a stack of books in the craft foom
12 Princess Peony is very shy and came out of hiding for a brief moment.
13 I just love her facial markings!
14 Empress Tang is the bolder one of the two kittens and likes wandering around the house.
15 She is a very playful cat and likes a lot of attention.
16 Princess Peony enjoys snuggling in my bed.
17 She is so fluffy and soft.
18 Purrrrrr
19 Sweet dreams, Princess

Martha, I'm amazed at how welcoming your older cats are. We lost one of our beloved cats to cancer in June. We adopted a new kitten a few weeks later. Our male tabby (it was his mother that died and they were very bonded) did not welcome the new addition. We also have 2 older cats and they love the kitten. But our male tabby has stayed in a separate part of our home not wanting anything to do with the new addition. He likes being with our dogs instead! Perhaps the fact he lost his mother has something to do with his anxiety? Anyway, congrats & good luck with your beautiful new babies!!!

The kittens are beautiful but have you ever consider adoption from shelter?

They are beautiful. We have a Tri-Color Calico Persian we brought back with us from Mexico. They are such sweet & fun cats to add to your household.

Awww, what a sleepy little girl Princess Peony is, and she and Empress Tang is absolutely adorable! For any who know that my little Mandy girl is calico, you can only imagine how my heart is very partial to these beautiful little fluffballs today! (My favorite is Peonyblossom, with her markings up on her little head).
~
Your other three fluffballs, Martha, prob'ly think you've betrayed them, but their little lives will resume (as you already know.) Frannie and Sharkey sure were cute while being their usual inquisitive selves, too...have they gotten a thump across their noses yet, from the kitties' strong forearms?! Owning cats helps one understand the literal meaning of a 'hissie fit', doesn't it?! [giggle]
~
I'm glad everyone's getting along nicely and acclimated to all the new smells, and sounds, and their new brofurs and sisfurs. [another giggle]

Hi Martha - The kittens are adorable! I envy you. I have never seen calico persian's before. When they calm down I hope you have them on your show. Also noticed today you mentioned you just got some geese - hope to see their picture soon. I too enjoy the persian breed, you can't beat the personality and temperment.

So have the cats u already have gotten to know the newbies yet?
Posted by: Missy | October 8th, 2009 at 11:31 am
The kittens are really cute, but how wonderful it would be if you would start adopting shelter animals instead of buying from breeders; think how many people would follow your example.
Something to think about and make it your own idea, for the good of the pets - the fewer breeders who are making money, the fewer puppy mills and the like there will be out there.

They are beautiful. I have a calico, Willa. I rescued her one night when I was driving to a friend's house and saw eyes reflected. Of course, I pulled over to see if it was a dog or cat. It was a kitten but she wouldn't come to me; however, she didn't run off. She did her cat movements but just wouldn't come. I called my friend and told her to bring food and a carrier. She finally started eating and I VERY QUICKLY grabbed her tail and put her into the carrier--she never scratched me. God was taking care of things. It took quite awhile before I could pick her up but she finally learned to accept love. I have a problem now that I hope you or one of your friends could help with. I rescued a deaf dog, Louie, in May. I need to find him a perfect forever home. I'm 58 years old and can't work so I live with my daughter, Laura. Laura is very tired of Louie because as a young dog (one-year old), he is very energetic. We already have four dogs (three are rescues) and can't keep him. Louie is such a sweet baby and has never gone to potty in the house. He is probably white German Shepherd/Bulldog mix and has albino traits which is probably why he is deaf. My address is 813-B Philema Rd. S; Leesburg, GA 31763 and phone is 229-888-6444. I don't mind if you post my email address if it will help me find Louie a home. Thanks and May God Bless.

I am always intrigued by and excited to see pictures of your pets! I am a senior veterinary student and can definitely say I share the same passion for animals as you do. Your new persian kittens are adorable and I myself rescued a calico persian shortly before starting veterinary school and your two new editions to the family remind me so much of her! Thanks for sharing such wonderful images with us!

So adorable! I have two Himalayans with blue eyes and white hair. Love them! Nobody could have prepared me for the kitty hair though! Oh my gosh! No, seriously! OH MY GOSH!!! Good bye black wardrobe. Hello to coooolors!! Sooo, two gadgets have saved the day for me. One...was my litterrobot that I ordered online. It looks like a spaceship. Can't believe I paid THAT MUCH for a fancy litter box. But boy, it has made my life easier. Love the silly thing. And then, that overpriced Rainbow vacuum that I bought used off of Ebay. Great deal, but still too much money. It's the only vacuum that can annihilate "cat hair tumbleweed"...without an untimely departure to vacuum cleaner heaven. Can't believe I just wrote all this. I guess I'm good for a laugh.

Oh Martha, they look so adorable!! I had a Persians cat once, when I was young. But sadly have to give her away, as my sister with her baby moved with us and we couldn't keep my cat anymore! I was quite sad about that!

Now I have a little daughter, who is mad about animals, especcialy kittens and puppies
We haven't got any yet, but maybe later on she can have one.
I love Persians cats, they look like a furball and they are so soft
Good luck with your cute kittens!

They are SO cute! Congratulations! Did you exhaust the lexicon of composers' names, hence the names "Empress Tang" and "Princess Peony?" They're charming names, at any rate. Better keep an eye on Francesca and Sharkey, considering their love of playing games with cats...hmmmm!

It's cute to me that you named them after royalty. My good friend, and self proclaimed Queen of crafts and all things in general (www.thepalacepost.blogspot.com)is always referring to her children as the royal offspring... and her pets... well... she calls her dog, "RD." (royal dog). Too funny.
Enjoy your furry puff balls. Wonder if they'll act as prissy as they look

"Well Franny, she's done it again
Added to our family she'll never refrain.
Sharkey, that's what makes Martha our friend
She stands tall, but knows how to bend.
When all is said n done kittens are a lot of fun
The secret is knowing when to hold or to run."
There's a whole lot of sniffing going on,
As the pecking order starts to take its form.
Bartok and Verdi try to figure out their lot
While Vivaldi pretends he knows what's what.
Empress Tang is bolder and did the house tour,
Hiding behind books, playful to be sure.
Princess Peony is the smarter, so fluffy and soft,
Snuggles in the Boss's bed up in the loft.
Sweet dreams, indeed, to the purring Princess.
Who rules the roost? Is anybody's guess.

You know Martha, you shouldn't do this to me. Now I want another kitten too. I have one very sweet little rescue girl named Abby Katzen who rules the roost around here. I would love to get her a playmate but daddy say's one kitty is enough around here. But I think Ms Abby Katzen and I are begining to wear him down. I just want to go out today and get a new baby for our family. Enjoy your lovely new kittens, they will bring you much joy,for sure!

Be sure to save their hair and make something out of them. Purse, sweater, scarf....
Posted by: Mamamia | October 9th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
The kittens are truly beautiful. Martha, I hope that next time, you adopt kittens from a shelter or rescue group and not a breeder. There are so many kittens waiting for homes in shelters across the country who are just as beautiful and deserving as these. So many will never find homes.....

Hi Martha, I love your canaries and your kittens as well. I have one canary along with 5 other birds and I would love it if you would discuss how to build a large backyard aviary. A zen place full of birdies. I would love to built one when my boyfriend and I get our first home very soon and it will be for my six birdies that I have and that I have adopted from different sources. Thank you so much and hope you read my comment. PS: I was also wondering if you could please email me the place where I can order a beautiful butterfly-and-bird patterned wallpaper that you showed on your April 2009 issue. I am trying to purchase this wallpaper for our future new home and hopefully you will get this message and will be able to inform me via email. Thank you once again. Peace to all living beings, including you!

I've never seen Calico Persians and they are so cute!
May you enjoy many, many years with your new girls!

They are very cute, but I am puzzled as to why you do not adopt from a shelter or breed rescue - it would be such a wonderful example to set to your fans.

Hi Martha,
I was so surprised to see your kittens and where you got them from. Last year my mother, who had never had a cat before, decided she wanted a persian kitten. My daughter, who's a friend of Pams step daughter Sarah, took my mother to Pam's house to show her Pam's persians. My mother fell in love with the kitten that was available for purchase. This kittens mother and siblings were the ones in Vogue Magazine. Princess didn't make it for modeling, lucky for us.
She is so special. She has an outstanding personality. She's loving, affectionate, playful, even with my little shitzu, mysterious, and a great bug catcher.
Since they all came from the same family, I think your going to be very happy with your new kittens, that are not only beautiful, but come from good temperament persians which is so important. I'm sure they will be a joy to you as our princess has been to us!
Congratulations on your new additions to the family.
Sincerely,
Kim
PS if you'd like to see a picture of princess, I can send it to you or you can go to my web page to take a look.

I was wondering how you came upon the idea to name one of your dogs Sharkey. I am the last of the Sharkeys from my generation as my brother never married and I had two girls but never married. I was surprisingly delighted to hear you speak of your dog, "Sharkey"....and here I was thinking we were of a rare breed.
Martha, I love your show and just wanted to say you are wonderful at what you do.
I would like to know if there are any craft projects that can be done with acorns. My home is surronded by a fortress of trees which is nice in the summer, but come Fall, the acorns are everywhere. When they fall, the cap comes off so I don't have many acorns that are whole, but I can always match up a cap if I had to. Any ideas?

HI martha Your kittens are beautiful, but so is their breeder,Pam. I got Smokin Joe from her 2 years ago and got a Bicolor black and white persian from her yesterday. My Patti is your kittens half sister. She hasn't been in my home for 24 hrs. and erveryone has fallen in love with her. She has 17 other cat play mates. Not only does Pam raise beautiful Persians, her cats are the most gentle and loving cats you ever what to know. Best wishes with your new babies, you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful kittens! I love calicos. What I like best about Persians is their perpetually dyspeptic expression.

They are so beautiful. Our pets are a reflection of the people we are and the better people we try to be to make their lives happier.

Congrats on the new additions to the family. I do however, wish they were saved from a shelter. We have so many animals without homes to breed more and to support it by purchasing them is simply not good judgement.

Beautiful cats, but please be careful about their access to pins. In picture number 11 it looks as though there is a pincushion near the cat's head and a curious kitty could be attracted by the shiny pins. I speak from experience - my cat swallowed a needle and had to have surgery to remove it - big $$$ and painful for the cat.

Precious, adorable and happiness in the form of two new 'babies' for you! Congratulations!

Such an important decision to bring new animals into your home, yet so infinitely rewarding.....it always concerns me when I interrupt the life of a little being, but I know they will be so much happier in the long run,as my home is built around the love I have for them! It obviously goes without saying that it is the same in your home. Enjoy your new babies!

i agree with missy, there are so many beautiful cats and dogs in shelters and rescues, why do yours have to be so perfect, i guess thats a dumb question !!

Hi Martha,
I have been a fan since I was 10. The kittens are beautiful but I really do hope you consider adopting or rescuing your next pet. There are many breed specific rescues out there. You could even open your own! Thousands of healthy and friendly cats are euthanized every year. There are far too many cats and not enough good homes available. Every cat bred means a shelter cat dead.

Hi Martha,
Welcome to the feline world! I have two wonderful kitties even though one has health issues with the eyes. Both, Shy and Abby were rescued and I have not regretted it one bit. Am sure that Shy and Abby, along with myself, will be watching your show and hoping for a glimpse of your girls.

Love your new kittens, but I think it would be better if you adopted from a shelter. There are so many wonderful cats (and dogs) there who need loving homes - and what better home than yours!

How wonderful they are, I am always thrilled when you share your pets and time. I cannot watch Martha Stewart Show in Canada as none of the cable companies carry FLN so I read my magazine and when I have time I reach you through the computer. I am so saddened that your show is not broadcast in Canada; there must be millions of us who really miss you.

Love the photos of your new kitties. I have a cute little calico tabby. My husband has a beautiful black & white long haired cat. They are rescue cats. We also have two basset hounds and a boxer. The bassets are recue dogs.

So wonderful little furrbabies, mom used to adopt one Calico when she's teenager and she got really wild and bouncy one. Any latest pic of them?

Dear Martha:
I only recently learned that you are a longtime Cat Person.
My Daddy doens't read your magazine, books, or anything, sorry. (I know, I know, how sad!) ;-D
Your new housemates are absolutely adorable!
I hope that when they are old enough, and gain new skills, that they will, like your Dogs, have a blog of their own! (Yes, I just learned of their work, as well!)
Sincerely yours
