ABC's Nightline comes to visit my farm
Recently, I was approached by Nightline, the ABC news show. They were interested in putting together a program about my life. Remember last week's blog from the book signing in Philadelphia when I mentioned that Nightline was also there? Well, to continue with that theme, yesterday, Cynthia McFadden, one of he co-anchors of the show, arrived at my home in Bedford bright and early with a producer and a film crew. Cynthia interviewed me and tagged along during my morning routine. Then, it was off to New York City, to visit my offices and to document what my day is like in my business world. Be sure to watch Nightline on November 19th!
1 It was a perfect morning for a visit from Nightline - unusually warm for early November.
2 Early in the morning, before the crew of Nightline arrived, Gyurme neatened up the gravel on the driveway.
3 I started my day with my morning workout in my gym with trainer, Mary Tedesco. Cynthia McFadden joined me for the session.
4 After our workout, we continued our discussion over a healthy breakfast - scrambled farm-fresh eggs, homemade granola, fruit salad, and Greek yogurt - of course, cappuccino.
5 Cynthia spoke for a while to my long-time housekeeper, Laura Acuna.
6 Laura Acuna and Mary Curren, hair and makeup. Mary was laughing that she is always photographed with food on my blogs.
7 After breakfast, we moved outdoors and headed down to the equipment barn for a meeting with my Bedford staff.
8 On the way, we ducked into the blog studio, where I showed Cynthia some photos from my modeling days many years ago. Ken Fuhr followed with his camera.
9 Cynthia was interested in my bald cypress grove as it is turning a magnificent amber shade.
10 In the staff meeting, I instructed where to plant the new delivery of spring bulbs.
11 Here I am mapping out the new garden plan for the Summer House.
12 All the while, Nightline was rolling.
13 Cynthia was amazed at how much machinery is actually needed to run the farm.
14 My fleet of 2 Kawasakis sat ready to transport us to the next area.
15 As we drove down to the stable, we said 'good morning' to Billy, Clive, and Rufus.
16 Meindert was curious to see who was approaching.
17 Ramon was happy to be on camera.
18 Nicole Sutliff, of the Susan Magrino Agency and Kim Kaplan, assistant to Cynthia.
19 Camera man, Akram Abi-Hanna checks for lighting.
20 Akram captures the beauty of the farm with Gil Ben-Ze'Ev - sound technician.
21 The beauty of instant review
22 Rutger was in a playful mood outdoors.
23 Through the allée on to the chicken coops.
24 The chickens were clucking as we pulled up.
25 Cynthia was thrilled to gather a few freshly laid, still warm, eggs.

Martha, maybe this will be covered in the segment, but I have always wondered how many hours of sleep do you get a night. It is apparent that your mind is constantly thinking of new ideas and new business opportunities. I find when I am in that mode that I usually do my best thinking early in the morning (3am) much to my dismay. Do you have this problem?

I'm looking forward to the 19th. You are an inspiration to all of us running our own business. Have you ever considered writing an autobiography or even a memoir focusing on how you built your business?

I'm excited to see more beautiful pics of your farm on November 19th! We'd love to live on a farm, if only a small one. Perhaps when we are done paying tuition....!

I can't wait to see Nightline! Your farm and vision for your farm is an inspiration to all of us! I can't get enough of it on the blog and your TV show. What a great thanksgiving treat to see more of Bedford.
I was surprised by the number of staff you have working on the gardens. How many employees do you have at Bedford? Also - what do you use all the other houses for? I think you said once there are 4 houses at Bedford.

Hi Martha,
Always fun and interesting to see your farm and I think many of us learn something new each time.
And I love Cynthia McFadden's work ... she is very talented! I will be watching on Nov. 19 th.
I saw your request on twitter to vote for Whatever Martha on http://www.fineliving.com
I voted again today and wondered if my vote counted again. Do you know if we can vote multiple times?

It was a gorgeous day yesterday for the filming by Nightline, Martha! In Maryland, we actually ended up with a cloudy but near-70 day - I was expecting sunshine! The farm was just breathtaking, under those blue and bright skies - there was no better day to capture on film a day in your life. My favorite destinations along the way were visits with the animals - the donkeys, horses, and chickens! Of course, the girls were in-tow, too [giggle - I LOVE those little girls!] - the little mascots of Cantitoe Corners! Ms. McFadden had to p-l-a-i-n-l-y see that you're comfortable with your animals and know how to handle them, and that you're basically in your element, surrounding yourself by choice with the outdoors and nature.
~
I'll look forward to this show next week and will make sure I don't miss it!...it's already noted in my day planner (which is my bible, but only second to the Holy one! [giggle] ).
~
Have a beautiful day, my wonderful friend!

Hi Martha,
I always enjoy seeing you on TV specials or news shows and talk shows so I will definitely watch Nightline on the 19th. You know what I really miss though are your Christmas specials. I can't remember the last time you had one of those, 2003 maybe. Those were always great. (That was a hint!)

The show was so good today – I loved seeing the Brooklyn Flea and would really like to visit and eat all that great food! Thanks for bringing it to us via your show. Trish

Hi Martha, Thanks again for another fabulous blog. I can hardly wait to see the Nov. 19th Nightline program on ABC. I know it's going to be great because these photos give a good preview of the show. I've always enjoyed watching Cynthia McFadden and I'm sure she will do a super job of presenting 'A day in the life of Martha Stewart'. I'll bet she was amazed at how a typical day of yours went. Hopefully more people will understand and appreciate what you are all about. I certainly do and I love every day of your life. THANKS!!! Jan

Martha,
As a devoted horse lover I am so anxious to see your beauties in the live during the Nightline special. Your photos of them always draw me in and make me long for the days of caring for and riding my own.
Kudo's to Nightline for the upcoming program on the 19th !

Hi Ms.Stewart,
What a thorough and beautiful website you have, its very detail oriented.
Actually I am exhausted at all the work you must do to achieve all you have and I have a strong work ethic.
When is your next trip to West Coast?, Donald Trump is doing a lecture over real estate next week.
It would be a great learning experience to listen to a 30minute lecture over your areas of speciality.
Thanks,
Fan in San Diego, Kevin

The word nightline, although it has nothing to do with what I'm about to say, made me think of this... I can't remember what show it was, but someone ended up putting lights up along their property line where their trees begin. it was beautiful. great look at night.

Hi Martha,
What a wonderful idea Nightline has! Your farm is terrific and I think the show will be too. I'll be sure to watch.

Dear Ms. Stewart:
}....Is there such a thing as pie plate rims? If not maybe someone should invent them.
The photos are gorgeous. When I was a child I always dreamt of growing up on a farm...Are there any apple trees there? Speaking of apples, 'tis the season for apple pie..I had a quick question on how to protect the edges of crust while the pie bakes {besides strips of foil and burning your fingers while doing so

Hi,Martha Looking forward to Nightline and learning more about your farm. Thank you so much for all of the years that you have inspired so many of us with your ideas and love of the lives that we live as women. You and I are sisters in spirit as we enjoy all of the same things.

Lovely pictures of the farm and horses.

My grandparents had a 100+ acre farm. Spending weekends, holidays and summer vacations on the farm helped shape the person I am today. There is something to be said about being one with nature and Mother Earth. Thank you, Martha for sharing your days at Bedford; it brings back so many wonderful memories.

Dear Martha,
I just saw you on Nightline: You were perfect. I have always enjoyed your programs and magazines. My heart went out to you when you were "hit by the bus," and I was/in your corner (silently) cheering you on. You are inspirational, and my daughter's ideal as she aims for perfection in all she attempts. You have millions of admirers, and you deserve them.
I wish you a future filled with the best of health, personally and business-wise.
Enjoy a very happy Thanksgiving.
Yours,
