Friends in Maine
Recently, I spent nearly a week in Maine and I must say that it was action packed. I was joined by a team of editors from the magazine and photographers, who worked hard with me creating multiple stories for Martha Stewart Living magazine. In addition to all of those activities, I hosted a preview party for Friends of Acadia’s annual benefit. It was a beautiful evening with more than 130 patrons in attendance. This preview party was a new addition this year so that the “friends” could view the items to be offered later at the auction, hoping to create energy and buzz. From what I’m told, that is exactly what happened. In total, the Annual Benefit raised over $608,000, which will help to maintain Acadia’s 47,000-acre national park of mountains and ocean.
1 One of the stories we photographed for the magazine was riding on horseback through Acadia. Here I am crossing a cobblestone bridge - one of the many gorgeous bridges in the park.
3 A beautiful Icelandic pony named Tina Turner rode with us. Her rider was Lili Pew, Friends of Acadia Board Chairman.
4 Patrick, son of Sem Groenewoud, Mr. Rockefeller's carriage driver. He brought a second horse from their stable for Kevin to ride.
6 James Dowdle, Muffin's husband, looks the part of a gentleman rider. His horse is a six-year-old retired race horse, who he is training for the Bedford trails.
7 Little Miss Muffett, Jillian Dow, my property manager's daughter - Jillian, at eleven, did more work than most adults and we all love her.
11 Jillian took Rinze from me after 2-1/2 hours of riding. I had an appointment at the house and she was more than happy to ride the horse to our stable.
18 This is the temporary paddock my two Friesians used while away at 'camp' - very different from the grassy fields in Bedford, but they loved it.
21 One afternoon, David Rockefeller took us out on his newest Hinkley Picnic boat. He drives with a joy stick and is quite the cowboy driving carefully, but fast, at 37 knots!
22 Brian Lindquist works for David Rockefeller. He is enormously knowledgeable about all things having to do with Acadia and the Rockefeller legacy pertaining to the formation of Acadia National Park.
25 One evening, I had a party to benefit the Friends of Acadia. More than 130 patrons attended, including David Rockefeller, and France and André Desmarais from Montreal.
27 My terrace was quite crowded at the height of the event. Lili Pew officiated and gave a little speech of thanks.
28 Lili Pew works very hard for the Friends of Acadia, an organization which raises a lot of money annually to supplement one of the nation's most visited parks.
29 My editorial team - Sarah Carey, Ayesha Patel, Quy Nguyen, Vanessa Holden, and Fritz Karch - attended the party.

Maine sure is a beautiful place!!!!!
You all seemed to be having a great time, even if you were working. I'd like to have a job working with you.
That was a great amount of money to help Acadia. Keep up the good work.
Gloria!!

The shots of the terrace full of happy guests look great. Everyone seems happy and content. And the boy jumping from the ferry building is a great picture of an American summer and a carefree world.

I fell in love with Maine through your pictures. Friends of mine are taking me to Bar Harbor for a week over Labor Day. They rented a cottage near Acadia that is right by the water. I am so excited about going. This will be the first "get away" I have had since the explosion at my kennel and I think it will be a good thing.

I am all for good causes. It is nice to know that the Annual Benefit raised a substantial amount that will help maintain Arcadia national park. Blessings to all who contributed! Trish

I want to be Martha. Everyday I look at her slide shows and I am envious. We all are. I just love you Martha.

Great times in Maine! Love that little Jillian...very poised for one so young. Is France Desmarais the daughter of our former Prime Minister Jean Chretien? She looks vaguely familiar.

Dear Martha,
I spent my entire twenties living in the Maine countryside and your photos have brought me back. It's a beautiful place and I can't think of a better combination than good friends, horses and Acadia National Park.

Hi Martha, What a busy, fun week you must have had in Maine, again. Can't wait to see the new MSL magazine articles related to this trip. How fun it must have been for the horses and the riders to enjoy those terrific trails in such beautiful weather. The Friends of Acadia look like they were having a terrific time there at Skylands. Sure would love to travel to Maine someday. What a beautiful place here in our wonderful country. Jan

The first time I visited Acadia was when I joined my sister and some women from NH on a carriage driving trip. I'm a New Yorker and did more hiking than driving, but I loved the carriage roads, lobster, and the idea that this is an island with 24 mountain peaks! I was hooked. And I've gone back every summer since. To ease my nostalgia when I couldn't get to Acadia, I started blogging about it. And, of course, I mention Martha!

What a generous hostess to open your home and gardens. I am looking at the one photograph of your terrace and is that planters on the roof there or do you have a sod roof? It's beautiful. And your fresian horse is adorable! Really all of the pictures make us feel like we were there. Thank you, Candylei

Martha; Wow! What beautiful country Maine is and I love the horses. Looks like a great ride and a wonderful visit.
By the way, I also loved the show today. The recipe and the goats were great. Cannot wait to see if I can find some goat milk locally to try out this recipe.

You are a good photographer. That young man was my grandson, Richard Howland, at 27 a veteran Islesford lobsterman, president of the Cranberry Isles Lobster Co-op, constable of the village, member of the volunteer fire department, and busy building his own shop and house here on Little Cramberru.

Lynne Dominy is now at Acadia National Park as she has done so much for NDNS in New Mexico, think she will continue there. Thank you so much for your interest in Nature and preserving it for all to enjoy. I am glad you are also allowing us to be part of your life.
The harder you work, the luckier you get..

Martha, it is so wonderful to hear you honor Jens Jensen with appreciation! Have you ever done a story on his marvelous retreat called "The Clearing" in Door County, Wisconsin? It's a place for people to go and "clear" their mind. I took two different vacations there enjoying classes on jazz appreciation. What a privledge it was to share that glorious exposure to nature with fellow jazz lovers. Best of all, it is a very affordable experience.

We were in Bar Harbor from August 16 to 20 - I love that place! Got up at 4:30 one morning and went up on Cadillac Mountain and watched the sunrise - beautiful. Lot of fog this year and tourism was up from previous years. Good for their economy. Three cruise ships came in while we were there. The first one was huge. Lot of fog - had our whale watch cruise cancelled. A reason to go back plus watch a sunset one evening.

I just arrived home here in Nova Scotia after spending several glorious days in Maine with my 10yr old Angus and my friend Mary Lou (Angus's cherished godmother). We all had a grand time, with something for everyone, with Acadia National Park being the most memorable experience. In fact, I am downloading my pics as I write.
Your focus on happy faces set within a beautiful background is striking and so wonderful to see. I am the advertising manager for Nova Scotia Tourism I love to show the faces of Nova Scotians who create the experience and those who come to enjoy. After all, great memories are what vacations are all about! I think we smiled from ear to ear throughout our entire trip! Kudos for capturing what really matters.
