The March Digital Issue of Living Has Arrived!
I was thrilled to read your lovely comments regarding the launch of Martha Stewart Living’s monthly digital issue for the iPad last month. It seems that you were as taken as I was by the fantastic digital extras, beautiful photography, and interesting stories featured in the February digital issue.
Luckily you don’t have to wait any longer for the latest digital issue of Living–the March issue has arrived! You can see a preview and buy it here. This special gardening issue comes to life with the tap of a finger and contains everything you need to know to start growing your very own garden.
1 Read about how my shade garden at Bedford came to be. Here, I’m holding a Victoria Lady fern–one of the most unusual ferns in my garden.
2 Click through an interactive slide show of my favorite shade plant varieties, including this fantastic trillium luteum or yellow trillium.
3 Our Good Things section gives great ideas for bringing spring to the table, like this place card, made from a little pot of moss….
5 Don’t miss our special Great Finds section filled with our 50 favorite products, projects, and places inspired by the garden, including this Fern Garden pillow from the Martha Stewart Collection at Macy’s…
8 Find out which cream I rely on to keep my hands in top shape. Plus, watch our editors discuss their own hand cream picks behind the scenes at our office.
9 Learn how to grow a garden no matter the size of your backyard with our small space gardening tips.
11 After watching our video footage of a lovely potluck garden party hosted by a community garden in Philadelphia, you’ll be inspired to grow (and eat) your own fresh food.
13 Tour Dede McGehee’s expansive garden in Lexington, KY. It’s just bursting with beautiful vegetable patches and flowerbeds.

I really like the flower arrangements in picture #11. The rest of the pictures are beautiful, also. I could just sit down to a meal of those fresh vegetables.

Hi Martha, I absolutely love the digital issues of Martha Stewart Living Magazines and will download the March digital issue very soon! The first two digital issues have been extremely superb and so much fun to view over and over again!! This gardening digital issue is going to be very inspiring for planting my spring vegetables and plants hopefully in the next few months. I have a new small greenhouse and I hope I will be able to plant my tomatoes and green beans earlier than before. I appreciate all of these wonderful things that you do for us-thanks so much, Martha! Hope you have a terrific time in Florida this weekend and will love to see your twitpics! Thanks again, Martha, and have a fantastic weekend! Jan

Martha, your iPad magazine versions are absolutely exquisite... but why do they take so long to be available in iTunes stores outside the States? I am still waiting to download the last three months! I have managed to access Cookies and also Beauty - which were stunning.

Shade gardening is one of the more rewarding types of gardening and can be low maintenance once you've planted the right type of plants. Even a large patch of fern seem decadent and take very little care.
There's such a wide variety of hosta ranging from blue/green to yellow/green and varigated white or yellow versions not to mention the variety of leaf shape and size of miniature to giant.
Ferns have always been cherished by my Mom and I have come to enjoy collecting them for my shaded areas. The taller ones like ostrich fern are so elegant and give a natural woodland look when planted among tall azalea or rhododendrum bushes. And they're absolutely stunning when the bushes are in bloom.
Layering the shade garden with moss, wild violets and other low growing plants followed with a taller tier of bushes, then trees will give lots of interest and intrigue with various shapes and sizes of leaves. Varigated plants are a nice surprise among the solid colors of other plants.
To keep maintenance down, plant what can grow in the area (micro climate) that you have. For shaded, moist areas, plant hosta, fern, etc., for sunny dry areas, plant drought tolerant sun loving plants. This is takes some research but will benefit your garden to be more successful and less hassle to maintain.
Most of all just get out there and have some dirty fun!

Martha - where is Franny? Even if it wasn't an accident please give the little girl a second chance. I know Zoe can get a little aggressive at times I think it's the small dog syndrome. I'll adopt her - please don't ship her off for good.

Hi Martha,
The Gardening issue has always been one of my favorites. I especially like all 50 of the Great Finds this month. Just the other day, I was wondering where I could get another pair of leaf-collecting mitts and voila, #39! Maybe I won't accidentally drop them in my leaf bag next time and dispose of them!
~
I still don't have an iPad so I guess I'll have to continue activating the pages by flipping them manually. "Community fare" was really nice - loved the cupcakes arranged like a sunflower!
~
I think you're in for great weather in Miami this weekend - enjoy! Trish

Hi, I don't have my ipad yet but I do have a copy of the March issue Living.
There is a beautiful net bag on pg.117 hanging on the back of the chair. Any idea where it is from?
Thanks.

There never is a bad issue of LIVING. I do not have an iPad but I do have a chair and find time to enjoy every issue. Dr. Dede McGehee’s article was perfect. I hope you continue to have such great articles. It would be wonderful to always have an article regarding individuals with busy; maybe even nonmainstream careers who find great peace in simple work in their gardens and homes. I remember the blog with Martha using her vacuum cleaner and being quoted as saying "I like running a vacuum...." cleaner

So enjoyed Margaret Roach on your show today. Great article about her as well as Dori Greenspan in March issue of More magazine. "And I Shall Have Some Peace There" by Ms Roach and Dori Greenspan's "Around My French Table" are both on my must get book list.

Dear Martha,
Whenever I use 9" or larger cake pans I like to fill the at least half full of batter. Usually this requires doubling the batter. This is not my problem, however. In order to completly assure that the layers are fully baked I wind up with a thicker crust on them, or horror of horrors, the sides are burnt. I line the bottom of the pans with buttered wax paper so sticking is never a problem. Do you have any solutions for my thick, crusty sides? As an unrelatted question, do you have any recipies for a strawberry layer cake using fresh or frozen berries? Thank you so much for your time. I an a loyal fan of yours and watch your programs whenever I can. Sincerly, Rhonda Kimpel

Digital Edition is A plus!
I have purchased all three issues, and plan on the next three- and then some!
The features are actually a lot of fun!
So interactive, vibrant, cleverly and expertly organized and presented in such an appealing manner! But wait, this is Martha Stewart I'm talking about, so I wouldn't expect anything short of perfection.
Ciao Bella!

I am really enjoying the March digital issue of the magazine. I downloaded all the issues so far and I also downloaded both issues of the Everyday Food magazine. I took it on the plane with me this past week and everyone that walked by asked what I was looking at. I proudly said " Martha Stewarts magazines!! isn't this cool?" Everyone was so impressed. They all wanted to play with my ipad. Congratulations on becoming a grand-mother!!! I am so excited for you. You have been just beaming the last couple of shows. Long time coming for you and I know you are going to be a fantastic Grandmother.

The view of the landscape is strikingly beautiful. I can always appreciate outdoor living and activities. Gardening would be another way of taking advantage of what nature has to offer.
