My Day at Home
Dear Readers,
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog. It’s a fun challenge to prepare and post on a regular basis. However, this week, my blog team is taking a well-deserved rest and I have decided to repost some of the most popular blogs from the past. I hope you are all enjoying the summer and staying as cool as can be.
Last Friday, quite miraculously, I had nothing scheduled to pull me away from home. After a good night sleep, I had a vigorous workout with my trainer, Mary Tedesco. Feeling energized, I decided to tackle a couple of cleaning and organizing projects in the equipment barn and also in the offices down at the stable. It's amazing how much stuff one can accumulate. After going through closets, drawers, and shelves, I got busy and made some labels. I am a big fan of label makers and post-it notes to keep things neat and organized. When those projects were done, I drove into town to purchase a few things that were needed. Believe it or not, days like this are fun for me!
1 This building is aptly called the equipment barn. The floor is a sealed cement slab, which cleans up rather nicely.
5 Of course, I found a broken truck part and Fernando had to explain how it happened. I wasn't happy.
16 I also noticed that this green stool was missing a screw. I added that to my list for the hardware store.
18 I really like to shop at Katonah Paint & Hardware. Lucky me - there was a parking spot right in front of the store.
20 This is a real classic hardware store with drawers full of supplies - not the pre-packaged variety.
22 And, he had a close enough match to the screw for my green stool. Now I need to locate the touch-up paint.
23 I also needed a door closer to replace the one on the house storm door that slammed and nearly broke the night before.
24 Next, I took a jaunt down the street to the Village Market, where I purchased celery for my fresh vegetable juice and milk and raw sugar cubes for my cappuccino.

Dear Martha,
I just love your posts on every day life! They're quite wonderful. Trina

Hey Martha
I understand why you enjoy days like this. I love organising too! My days are busy, although not nearly as busy as yours, so it's always a treat to attend to these kind of organising tasks.

PS Thanks to you for all you do to inspire us.

Morning Martha,
I loved every photo in your post today. I too love days where I get lots done. I call them 'a day of do' and I am always pleased with the results.
Have a great day.

Hi Martha
Don't you just love days like that they are the best. I call that "putzing" around the house. It's amazing how many things you can find to do when you don't have things to do! Sounds like a Seinfeld episode
Modern technology is wonderful but like you said you never get a day off.
Have a Happy Easter.

The look that Martha gives you when you break something? Priceless!
I enjoy your blog, especially how you keep your farm in order. It gets me motivated on my own projects...lists, lists, lists.
BTW, I hope that you catch that person who is driving over your lawn!

These are my favorite posts. We get to see what you do on tv a lot but rarely do we get to see what you do on your days off. Thanks for sharing.
P.S. I am really enjoying the fact that Hallmark is showing many of the episodes of Martha Stewart classics.

Martha, I have followed you thru my 30s, 40s, and now I will be 50 on June 24th. You have been such an inspiration and my only complaint was the public needed to see you (I am told this constantly) doing something that the average every day person without wealth does. You have accomplished this on your programs on your new segments on "Hallmark". I am so proud to continue to brag about you and to be able to respond with this new program. The proof is in the pudding! Happy Everything my friend, Pamie G., New Braunfels, Texas

Your annoyed face just cracked me up. I feel just the same way in similar situations, but my "staff" doesn't jump when I'm annoyed.
You sure could whip my husband's garage into shape, that's for sure!

You have inspired me to get my own house in order. I need to go through all the drawers, closets, garage, etc. and clean and pitch! It is so much work, but such a great feeling when it is done. Thanks for the big poke!

I just love days when nothing is going on. Work on odds and ends, check things out, hang out with the dogs, cook up so food. It's wonderful. You're so funny.... how many celebrities use Goof Off?! That's why I love ya Martha!

Martha - your tips are so helpful. My pantry (walk-in) and kitchen are organized to the max. I love to have everything is places that make sense. Cups next to the fridge, plate and silverware next to the stove, baking items together, etc. I believe that organization=productive(ness). I can't believe that you had a free day, enjoy!
Posted by: Angel Barnes | March 31st, 2010 at 11:06 am
Her staff members, I'm sure, are thinking, "Uh oh...here she comes with that damned labelmaker!" Even I think that's a little over the top. However, if she weren't obsessed with such things, she wouldn't be Martha, and Martha's fussy nature and suggestions have inspired me to be more organized and tidy in my own life. I enjoyed this "day in the life" posting.

Hi Martha,
Wow, just look at all that stuff in your equipment barn! It looks like a few areas at Home Depot - my favorite areas btw, and everything is so neat. Well, you've inspired me. It is time to neaten up my tools in the garage and maybe keep them neat!
~
It is great that you can go shopping in town without people bugging you or maybe the locals are used to you by now. I'm watching you on Hallmark as I type this and you have on leather pants - so neat - and you're cooking ham with Salli LaGrone. I'm so happy Hallmark is airing your classic shows and also your daily show starting in September! Thanks for a peek into your ‘day off’. Trish

I notice your label on the door closer. I would suggest (goo gone) at the dollar store for a quick removal. It is cheaper and works fast. I bet you didn't pay a dollar for the stuff you bought. Love your show but my area doesn't get it anymore. I'll keep looking in case it come on again.

I find many label adhesives very annoying to remove from products. Indeed Goof Off is good, and the name reminds me that it is the manufacturer who goofed and chose the wrong kind of adhesive, perhaps prioritizing price over purpose. Why can't they test those doggone adhesives for removal in the factory ?!?

I have only recently discovered the marvelous Martha and now catch up with her activities daily on the web. The tip for the removal of lables is invaluable as I have just run out of a computer lable remover but cannot find a replacement here. Those 'high tack'ones are the bane of my life and always seem be be covering some vital instruction on the back of a container. Will see if i can get Goof Off on line - doubt if it retails here in Ireland.
Loved all the Patricks Day recipes & Irish guests. Bless you all on the show.

it's nice to know that MS takes a day to feed the cleaning bug like the rest of us - i've been doing the same thing lately - a screw here, a doorknob here, touch up paint there, organizing garage, labeling boxes... but must get one of those handy label makers. I've been using duct tape and a sharpie.

Could you please do more of these 'regular life around the farm' blog posts? I would love to see one especially on the the big equipment and that massive generator of yours.
As far as your roadside vandal goes, here is a website about setting up a camera to remotely view your property through an IP address:

Web Monitor is the product you would need to set this up. If you do this, you should hide the cameras in surrounding trees to camouflage them.

Hi Martha! I am enjoying the blog. I have been watching the TV programs as well, from our local channel, KTXH, to the Fine Living Network on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and now on the Hallmark channel! I just saw an Easter cooking episode with your and your mom making Hot Cross Buns. How sweet! Thank you for showing all of us how to be successful in the many tasks we have to do, and inspiring us to create! Take good care, and have a Blessed Easter weekend.

Hi Martha,
I hope that the celery you used for your juice was organic, since it becomes concentrated in the juicer it is important not to have any pesticide residue, and unfortunately, celery is at the top of the "dirty dozen" list of foods with the highest contamination counts.

Martha I would be so thrilled to receive this machine that embroiders. I have been wanting one for a very long time but due to recent economic difficulties (like I'm sure other families I have been unable to purchase "I want items"). The first project I would make is initials embroidered on shirts for each of my remaining siblings as gifts at what we call our annual "Original Family Thang" They would be thrilled.

Hi Martha, How nice that you finally had a day off to do whatever you wanted at your farm. I love seeing everything you did that day and of course you did more than I could imagine myself doing in one day. I like to do as much as possible everyday, but as time goes by I find that I can't do as much as I would like. I push myself, but still can't do as much as you do. I admire you for all that you do. I have been watching your TV Show at 2AM this week and I love every show that you do for us. During the day, I watch the Hallmark Channel before I go outside to do yardwork, etc. Thanks for all that you do for us, Martha. Would love it if you had your own TV Channel and we could all watch everything that we want at a reasonable time. Hug your sweet animals for me. Love, Jan

Martha-
It's amazing to me that you have time to address a missing screw, a door needing painting, a lock that needs repair.
Those are the "things of life," ordinary, every-day tasks that give us purpose and satisfaction when completed.
I love seeing a peek at your "private" life. Your ordinary day day off looks much like mine!

I too enjoy touring hardware stores...the best are the old-fashioned sort...very difficult to find nowadays. Somehow hardware stores of thirty and more years ago smelled nicer than the ones today. More real wood smell i guess. This is a great blog page as it lets people know how hard you work and you do not get from ground zero to lovely set dining tables with VIP guests in 10 seconds flat. A lot of dedicated work goes into anything successful. Thanks!

Soon after my husband died many years ago in a fit of depression I tore up most of my recipe collection. Soon after i had to sell our house and most of the contents. For some reason i didn't want to see the sewing machine that my mother had given me as a wedding present...i wanted to give it to a good home. I drove around close to where I grew up and spotted a tiny shot window with a hand-written sign that said "sewing/alterations". I figured this person could use an extra machine as mine was of very high quality...White brand. The woman had a thick Caribbean accent (to me at least) but the shock and smile on her face when i said i had a sewing machine that ran backwards and she could have it free if she wanted it and it was in the back seat of my car...well, she was so happy. I never returned to that shop but often wonder if the machine is still in that little shop so close to my childhood home.
Thanks!

Here's a suggestion for your collection:
Recipe Card Dividers. That's right. So many of my friends (and I) have 4" x 6" recipe card files, but no dividers. If they could include

Sure would love to have a big tool barn with all of those clean tools and great equipment used on your farm. How is the weather there this morning? Do you get to fly out to your vacation anytime today? I know you would have a terrific time if you did get to go! Have a great day no matter what happens! Martha! I am an avid fan and I adore this post for so many reasons. #1:I also love days like this. #2: I am constantly having to leave postits for my roommate who is very flighty and forgets to do much simpler things like turn lights off and close cupboards (drives me nuts!) and #3: love that you did it all in what my 2 closest girlfriends call "Mom Wear". None of us even have kids, but funny enough - all our Mom Wear outfits include stretch pants and a puffy! Love the candid photos!

Due to snow closing work, I had one of those rare, unexpected days off today. Since my boys are strong, I let them tackle snow removal. I reorganized my clothes since I was putting away laundry and sorted through and put some aside to pass on to the thrift store. I spent most of the rest of the day reading, "As Always, Julia" a book of letters between Julia Child and Avis DeSoto. I like this kind of downtime.

Hey, Martha:
Funny you should mention your labeler, I had my P-Touch out today. Wanted one since I saw it on your show and bought it about five years ago. Today, I finally bought more cartridges for it. Made a few more labels now that I have more of the tape to go in it, and also cleaned the print head. I'll be labeling the cats next!

Martha!!! I just found your blog. I love it!!!! Also love that you include pictures of you day. I may have to try that on my blog. Mine is mostly about art... as I am an artist.
If you ever get to north Alabama...Come see me and the other artists at our NEW art gallery called 16 Main Gallery in Madison Alabama...in the historic downtown area near the railroad tracks. Also...take time to eat across the street at a wonderful little cafe called Main Street Cafe.
Thanks again for all your wonderful tips!!!

Hello Martha: Take care of your lip. Bless your puppy.. Wish you were my neighbor right now.. I need encouragement. Two years ago my husband and I moved into a home with 5 bedrooms. One of the rooms I decided would be my office. Sadly it became the "storage room" Finally the time has arrived and I have to organize the mess so tomorrow is going to be Project Office / Day One.

The time you showed us that messy room, long ago, that was behind a closed door helped me so much. I was always afraid to tell anyone I was a "messy" worker or let anyone see my work room until it was all cleaned up. Seeing that room freed me! You saved me once again! Thank you!

How do you keep your furniture clean with dogs roaming all over your house?

I've never seen a more talented woman in my life. Is there anything you can't do? lol
I need my house organized. Only if I could get the rest of the crew on board.
I just happen to find your blog. I don't even know how. I said, "Martha has a blog?" I had to check it out. I'm glad I did. I think it'll be lots of fun here! As I like to read blogs for fun too!
Thank You!

I'm thinking this is the 3rd time this Blog has been around and just as much fun to read this time as the first time. And, I'd still like to know...How does your storage shed look today, and what did Fernando have to say about the broken truck part?
When you put sticky notes on broken things, do you put a date so you'll know just how long it takes to get it fixed?...photo #15.

I love Hardware Stores like the one you went too. When I visit hometowns in the Midwest that is the first place I go too.

Hi Martha, Thanks so much for reposting this delightful blog a third time! As usual, a third time is a charm and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this post again! Re-viewing these photos and comments was terrific! Seeing you happy and not-so-happy was very familiar to the way I feel sometimes! Seeing the website for Mary Tedesco was also fantastic! I don't recall seeing that wonderful website before. She is a superior trainer and it is always great to see her on your TV Show whenever possible! Thanks for reposting again! Was waiting to hear you on Sirius Radio 110 yesterday and it was a repeat of last week's Ask Martha. Sure hope you will be 'live' next Monday! Sure hope it gets cooler there in NYC-knew you had a rain storm because I was watching the Yankees against our Mariners yesterday and the game was about 3 hours late because of rain. We had rain all day and only 62 degrees here. Have a great day! Jan

Dear Martha, I would like to see your horse barn. I live in upstate NY and well horses are every where. With the flat track and Harness track both running there isn't a time when I don't see horses other than the ones I take care of. Just in the last three months we took in a boarder and newly retired Standardbred harness race horse so he can be trained to do something else. First he has to learn how to be a horse again. To Get Stylish Guy to stay turned out more that two hours is a challenge. Today we made it to four hrs which doesn't happen very often with him. I have had to use his favorite treats as a tool to stretch his time by taking his carrots(baby) and scatter them around his hay pile and in the grass. Then back to the barn he goes. He tried to walk all over me but I and he have an understanding that walking over me is not acceptable. I'm not a horse trainer but I have worked around horses and in an Equine Hospital and have some money saving tip's if you would like them just Email me at nurse-betty@nycap.rr.com and send me a carpenter I need some post holes dug after a tree took out two sections of fence. Since I hurt my back last year my lifting limit is less than forty pounds at a time. Any photo's of your barn interior and exterior posted on your website would be great.

I am a sticky label removing expert. There's a method for painstakingly pulling one off with your bare hands, which I've performed many times for myself and others. Anyway, I appreciate the product recommendation for the label remover, as I didn't know one was available.
Also, I love to organize! Whenever I organize a drawer or closet, I admire my handiwork (probably a bit too much) and think "Martha would definitely approve".

Martha,
I'm sure it is all a blur to you now, the Mark Burnett Apprentice Days, but every now and again I think of the experience with a warm smile. What a fun memory to be able to dine with you in your home, and tour some of your properties, and learn a bit about your world. I recently quit my job as an attorney to stay home with my two little ones (Miriam, 5, and Truman, 2). I started a blog, and as a writer yourself, I hope you find a moment to glance at it. You might find the posts humorous! I was going to ask Dawna for your email, but I didn't want to impose, and I figured one of your editors would catch this blog comment one pre-posting.
Good luck to you! I wish you the best. If you ever have a moment, drop me a line. After all the hard work we put into that one summer, it would be nice to keep that line of communication open.

First I would like to say what a spectacular thing of beauty Ms. Stewart has created in Cantitoe.
I have been enjoying all the pictures of the farm. Since Martha wants this to be a self sufficient farm, I was wondering if any renewable energy sources were used, ie geothermal, wind power, solar? I may have missed seeing a mention of it. That would be the icing on the cake for me!
