20 Ways You Can Stand Up To Cancer
Approximately 1.6 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer this year, which is about one person every 30 seconds. So Whole Living has joined forces with Stand Up to Cancer to help raise much-needed research dollars with their “50 Ways to Stand Up to Cancer” digital issue. Each time this issue is viewed, we’ll make a donation to the initiative. So check out some of these and encourage everyone you know to take a look—and to tune in to Stand Up To Cancer’s fund-raising program, which will air live on major networks and several cable stations on September 7 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. EDT. For great tips and recipes, please click here.
1 Eat a Top Seed - Sesame seeds may halt the growth of certain types of cancer cells, according to some animal studies. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
2 Have a Dry Run - Produce retains most of its nutrients when dried, but dates, figs, and prunes actually outperform their fresh-fruit counterparts, with higher amounts of phenol antioxidants, shown to protect against heart disease and cancer. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
3 Sip on Exotic Juices - Pomegranate juice is loaded with vitamin C and potassium, as well as cancer-fighting polyphenols. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
4 Pick Berries - All varieties offer a unique blend of phytochemicals that seems to boost the production of enzymes that help knock out carcinogens. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
5 Discover the New Black - Black rice has anthocyanins— purple and red pigments that may decrease the risk of cancer. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
6 Say Shiitake - The Asian mushrooms contain antioxidants - free-radical attackers that help block the formation of certain carcinogenic compounds. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
7 Heed the Call of the Wild - One 3.5-ounce serving of fresh, wild salmon offers 0 IU of vitamin D, which is thought to play a role in cancer prevention. Farmed salmon has only a quarter the amount of vitamin D as wild, research indicates. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
8 Tap the Power of Cauliflower - Like its close cruciferous cousins broccoli and kale, cauliflower is blooming with antioxidant, cancer-fighting, and heart-healthy properties. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
9 Give It a Twist - All citrus fruits contain limonoids, which may stave off breast, skin, and stomach cancers, according to some lab and animal studies. They’re concentrated in the peel, so zest away. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
10 Cheer The Blues - In terms of antioxidant power, fresh blueberries are stars, with high concentrations of anthocyanins, which may curb cancer cell proliferation. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
11 Skip the Sugar - Dessert can be just as sweet and seductive without refined sugar. Studies show that eating too much of it, especially the refined types, may lead to increased inflammation. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
12 Add Some Zing - Ginger may reduce the risk of colon cancer by quelling inflammation in the digestive tract. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
13 Have a Salad – in a Glass - Kale contains isothiocyanates, which help purge the body of carcinogens, and apples appear to have anticancer effects on the colon. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
14 Focus on Fiber - Oats are a good source of fiber, which, in addition to helping the body eliminate toxins, can ward off hunger by keeping blood sugar levels steady and making the body feel fuller longer. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
15 Tuck Into Green - Broccoli is a source of compounds called indoles, which have inhibited cancer growth in lab studies. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
16 Roll Out the Red - Tomatoes contain lycopene, which may reduce the risk of lung and stomach cancers. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer
17 Try Turmeric - The golden-hued Indian spice gets its color from a pigment called curcumin, which is also an antioxidant that fights inflammation. http://www.wholeliving.com/183667/50-ways-stand-cancer

Hello Martha,
I am so far from you and your fabulous actions as I am living in Europe, in Luxembourg, precisely... I am an active member of Think Pink Lux which is more focused on women cancer, but you are right, there is so much to do to battle and also to help and support those who are in the battle right now... We are trying to get more visibility to raise more funds for our cause so any tips would be welcome to make us more efficient! Thank you.

Soda doesn't seem to be heavily consumed here in Istanbul. Instead, people can buy fresh juice squeezed right on the street. Carrot juice is my favorite but 100% pomegranate juice is also popular or mixed with fresh orange juice. It seems so much more healthy and useful than soda.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is just around the corner and I have learned of a breast cancer PREVENTION vaccine that can save more than $86.44 Billion in healthcare costs in this country, per year.
A preventive vaccine, developed by Dr. Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic was found to be 100% effective in preventing breast cancer in mice. Even mice bred for a high incidence of breast cancer failed to develop it when the vaccine was administered. Further, researchers found that mice already infected with breast cancer saw a marked reduction in tumors after being given this vaccine.
Funding for The Pink Vaccine would have a tremendous affect on millions of lives as well as on spiraling health care costs in our country. The $6 Million needed to move forward with clinical trials is a drop in the breast cancer bucket yet women continue to be diagnosed, and others die every day of this horrible disease.

Wow, this is practically the Turkish diet! Pomegranate juice is served fresh on the street (alongside fresh orange, grapefruit, melon and carrot juice). People don't bother with soda here. Dried dates and figs are a staple in Turkey and so are tomatoes! Turks eat tomatoes for breakfast paired with a delicious bread ring called simit that is covered in toasted sesame seeds. I wonder what their cancer stats are like and if they're lower. Hmmm.....
