This was our Saturday night dinner party for my birthday and Trey Laird’s birthday, with David Rockefeller as guest of honor. We had a giant lobster roast in the carriage house of Skylands.
The cooked lobsters all ready to serve
The lemons were cheesecloth-wrapped for the lobsters, for seed-free lemon juice.
We also had locally grown, grass fed steaks from Maine purchased from our favorite Sunset Acres Farm and Dairy in Brooksville Maine. Bob Bowen and Annie Bossi also produce farmstead goat cheese, eggs, lamb, pork and poultry. http://www.sunsetacresfarm.com
Don't those steaks look good?
Kevin made this spectacular hydrangea and thistle arrangement for the dessert table. There are lots of old decoys in the carriage house which we use for table decorations.
Here I am with my birthday cake, which was a delicious white cake with lemon filling and Italian meringue butter cream.
David Rockefeller waited patiently for his slice of cake.
Two cakes and David Rockefeller!
After dinner, we played pool, shuffleboard, and squash. Patsy Pollack played a game with me.
There was also time to fool around and play. This is one of the "ads" that was produced featuring Trey Laird and Douglas Friedman, styled by Kevin Sharkey. No offense badminters!
This is a view from the house terrace looking out towards Sutton island.
Lunch on Friday was my favorite Dungeness crabs, sent from Indianola, Washington - half a crab per person - perfect!
This is the basket in which we cook the farm-fresh corn in the big lobster cooker. This cooker is the same design as one will find everywhere in Maine, in which lobsters, etc., are cooked in big laundry tubs over wood-burning fires.
I have a collection of taxidermy at Skylands and this is one of the more gruesome examples of a lynx killing a beaver. These old pieces are collectibles and are often found at local auctions.
A view of the guest house and the mossy paths and woods
There's even a turkey taxidermy on display in the playhouse.
The lovely Maillol sculpture, Riviere, found in the garden
Hiking in the rain and traversing a river on the way to Great Head - We were all soaked to the skin that morning.
The view from Great Head
This is Sand Beach as seen from the top of Great Head. It is so so beautiful.
The sea was quite rough that morning but by afternoon, all had cleared and the sky was blue.
This is one of the colorful giant lilies blooming on the great terrace.
We had a paella party on Friday night and this is it about halfway done.
The paella with the mussels added - The dish is cooked in a giant paella pan over a wood and charcoal fire on the monstrous Weber grill.
The paella cooking in the mist - Luckily it did not rain, but we had umbrellas just in case.
I helped by adding some salt.
The shrimp was then added to the pan.
This is the pink stucco wall surrounding the Rockefeller flower garden, built in the 1920’s and topped with Chinese tiles shipped from Peking.
A local boat was tied to the dock when we went to lunch at Islesford Dock on Little Cranberry.
This is a view from the dining room at Skylands.
A moss slit in the woods - These are extraordinary features in some woodlands.

Stefano, Trey, and Douglas
I love this photo of my tennis courts. It reminds me so much of the photos of Slim Aarons, a photographer noted as a chronicler of "the good life".
The great lily display in the hall - another Kevin's masterpieces - and I grew the lilies!!!!
The western terrace table set for lunch
The Sunday breakfast waffles being cooked in the fabulous Belgian waffle irons - This is mass production!
Here I am walking to my boat awaiting at a dock.
Trey, Jen, David, and Stefano relaxing in the stern seat of the picnic boat
Douglas standing in the boat as we went sight seeing along the coast
A misty morning in the harbor
Here I am with Kevin on the boat
GK resting on the boat
Kevin, Trey, Stefano, and David
Enjoying the boat ride with Douglas and GK
Another great shot of Kevin, Trey, Jen, me, Stefano, and David
Jen and Kevin
I enjoy being captain and manning the wheel and joystick.
The rainbow on my birthday (it was Trey's birthday also)
These sausages were from Star Provisions in Atlanta. They were great on the grill for Sunday night's barbecue. http://www.starprovisions.com/
There were also strip steaks on Sunday night.
We ate at the long picnic table in the backyard.
For dessert, we gathered at the council circle and lit the fire platform.
The ingredients for s'mores - homemade graham crackers and giant marshmallows and really great chocolate and some vintage Bordeaux.
The giant marshmallows, homemade of course, were roasted on woodland sticks.
On a cool night, this is a great spot to finish off a great meal!
Ooops! Kevin dropped some marshmallow on his fancy slipper.
