Last weekend, I took a drive to Danielson, Connecticut, where Logee's is located. It is one of my favorite sources for tropical container plants. Logee's Greenhouses was started by William D. Logee in 1892.
Here I am with Byron Martin, grandson of the founder of Logee's Tropical Plants.
You may recall seeing Byron on my television show, sharing his extensive gardening knowledge.
The greenhouses at Logee's are packed with a large assortment of amazing plants. They are mostly arranged in alphabetical order.
98% of all the plants are propagated at Logee's where over 500 varieties are sold via catalog and over 1500 varieties are grown in the greenhouses.

William's eldest son, Ernest Logee, became interested in horticulture and turned his attention to growing tropical plants in containers, making these plants accessible to any one living anywhere.
Ernest's interests centered around the unusual form of Begonias.
He hybridized begonias for Logee's and was one of the original founders of the American Begonia Society, creating the Buxton Branch in Massachusetts.
He was drawn to Semperflorens, as well as Rex begonias.
He hybridized his own begonia and named them the Mother Goose Series.
Examples of his hybridized begonias are Lucy Locket, Pied Piper, Goldie Locks, Mother Goose and Pistachio.
Under the direction of Ernest, Logee’s at one time grew over 400 varieties of begonias.
Sadly, Ernest died as a young man when he fell from a tree he was pruning.
To honor him, Logee's periodically brings Ernest's begonias back into production.
When Ernest's younger sister, Joy Logee went to his funeral, she met her future husband Ernest Martin, who was also a horticulturist and member of the Begonia Society. What a fabulous coincidence - same name and same interest!
Logee's also sells a large variety of tropical fruits. This pear-shaped fruit is a Sweet Lemon, which happens to be incredibly sweet.
In 1900, William Logee bought a small Ponderosa Lemon tree from a grower in Philadelphia. It was planted directly into the ground in the original greenhouse. The same tree in the same greenhouse, called the Lemon Tree House, still stands today. Hundreds of thousands of propagations have been harvested from this original tree.
The following photos are of the plants that I purchased at Logee's. I was so excited about these new acquisitions and I had a great time potting them up in my greenhouse. Begonia Autumn Ember
