Gallery: Going to the Merida Market in Mexico

August 29th, 2008
Martha travels to the Merida Market during her trip to Mexico. Read the Original Post

The sign on the way into the famous Merida City Market.
These are the traditional beans eaten with almost every meal. They are shelled fresh in the market.
This lady shells many pounds of beans a day, sitting on her stool in the market.
A mix of sliced mango, jicama, apple, and papaya sprinkled with chili, sugar, and salt.
These are stacks of banana leaves, used for culinary purposes.
This bare-chested vendor kept cool behind his stacks of carefully folded banana leaves.
I actually bought these galvanized tin trays, which I will use for barbecuing and roasting outdoors on grills and in pits - by the way the six pans cost $9.00.
Squash, peppers, and chayote - these are just a few of the many fresh vegetables grown locally and sold.
Squash, peppers, and chayote - these are just a few of the many fresh vegetables grown locally and sold.
Sour oranges - very, very popular to eat, peeled, with or without chili powder, or in desserts, or fruit juices.
Small loquats - big black seeds are inside - these are so delicious, but must be eaten perfectly ripe.
Potatoes of all sorts are grown here - these yellow-fleshed spuds are like Yukon gold.
Papayas are especially delicious here - bright orange flesh, very sweet, and very nutritious.
A tortilla factory right inside the marketplace - I was surprised at how clean everything really was and I ate comfortably from the vendors.
A bit more modern, but another automated factory for tortillas - the 'daily bread.'
Fresh eggs and homemade smoked sausage - I could just smell an omelett!
My favorite find - red grapefruits carefully sectioned and served in plastic-lined glasses with a fork - they were so good and refreshing.
Look at these colorful, homemade marshmallows!
Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are sold peeled.
These tamales looked so good - I almost bought one but resisted the urge.
a pile of those wonderful tamales
Stall after stall sell wonderful foods - here roasted pork is served on tortillas with lettuce and sour orange juice.
Fresh iced juices are sold ready to drink with straws - coconut, papaya, banana, watermelon, etc!
The drinks have very interesting names.
more of the iced drinks!
meringues and roasted apples
This is sliced mango served in plastic - all the work done by others!
Mamey - another delicious fruit cut into edible wedges.
