My Mother's Day! Come see my photos and please leave a comment
We woke up to gorgeous spring weather here in the Northeast and it was so wonderful to spend the day with my daughter, Alexis and dear friend, Kevin Sharkey. We shared a really delicious lunch and had a fun and inspiring time together. I hope you enjoy these photos.
The garden near the greenhouse is growing really well - Hostas, Alliums, Epimedium, and Leucojum
A new Hosta from Klehm's Song Sparrow Perennial Farms www.songsparrow.com is compact, bright green, and sturdy.
More Epimedium, Hostas, Thalictrum and Aruncus
The side terrace looks especially verdant this spring with all of the boxwoods, some stewartias, and the hornbeam hedge just leafing out. Can you believe how beautiful the Kmart Chippendale-style outdoor furniture is?
A gorgeous purple wisteria standard just starting to bloom
These were the wonderfully wrapped presents brought to me on Mother's Day by my daughter Alexis - the four brown and pink packages hold paper coasters printed with my initials, the big blue box is a pair of La Perla silk pajamas, the the colorful boxes were filled with baked goods
You may know that Alexis is a fantastic baker - she gave me homemade graham crackers, Butter-butters, and chocolate caramel bars.
Alexis searches for and finds incredible boxes for her baking.
Kevin gave me an amazing white porcelain lazy Susan cake stand.
Here is the first rhubarb of the season.
The sink is full of freshly-picked asparagus - we had some for lunch.
The dining room table was set with pretty linens for our informal lunch
A closeup of the place setting
The Olson's from Silicone Valley sent me some of the season's first bing cherries - so sweet, juicy, and delicious.
A great cantaloupe cut into peeled wedges
This is fresh cream cheese from Russ and Daughters in NYC - no preservatives.
Alexis is now making her own bagels - we all had to admit they were the best bagels we ever had!
Kevin said these asparagus were the best he has ever eaten.
After lunch and Scrabble, we went to my friend's court and had a tennis lesson with Radoslav Radev - a great teacher and charming guy
Kevin is actually a very graceful tennis player.
Alexis and I look just a bit weary after horseback riding, lunch, scrabble, and tennis
Woops! - at 5:30 I remembered that I promised to bring a lemon meringue tart to dinner at the Warden's.
I baked two, just in case - they were unbelievably yummy.
Katie Goldberg and her Seattle-based mom came to visit - Katie works in corporate communications - they wanted to see the gardens and the property.
This is a type of Epimedium that is spreading in habit - it has bright green leaves and is edged in deep red.
A wisteria standard blooming in a deep purple shade - see the new tee pees that we use for clematis integrifolia supports.
This is a newly planted mature lilac standard - it should look spectacular in a few days.
The old apple espaliers are under-planted with blue muscari

I love the table setting! Glad you had a great day.

Hi Martha, I watch your show everyday I live in Cape Town SouthAfrica. I think we are watching old episodes of your show. Today we watched the programme where the dog trainer was helping to train your little black dog francesca. How far behind are we. We are going into winter here as I see you are getting hot weather. Thanks for a fantastic show.

Martha, your tribute to your Mother was beautiful. The song at the end was so beautiful and the person singing has a wonderful voice. I cried my eyes out. This was my third year without my Mom and I think I am getting better. Thank you so much for sharing your life with me. The pictures of your place are lovely and I am so glad you and Alexis and Kevin had a wonderful day. Love you Martha. Judy C.

Martha - Glad you enjoyed your Mother's Day. Watching your show today, I have to say, as an average housewife, if my family had given me the gift Joey gave to his wife -- having himself and the kids clean the house -- I would have * * *LOVED* * * it!!!

Hi, Martha,
I'm happy you had a wonderful Mother's Day with Alexis and Kevin Sharkey. The rhubarb and asparagus (from your gardens?) look delicious, as do the bing cherries, cantaloupe, and cream cheese. Alexis is quite a baker. Her bagels, graham crackers, fluffer-nutters, and chocolate caramel bars must have been tasty. She is also a fantastic wrapper of presents like the coasters, pajamas, and baked goods; Kevin wrapped that white porcelain lazy Susan cake stand well, too. It must be beautiful.
I enjoyed seeing the beauty around your home once again. The hostas, alliums, epimedium, eucojum, thalictrum, and aruncus are so lovely as are the boxwoods, stewartia, and hormbeam hedge. What sights to see while sitting in that Chippendale-stlye outdoor furniture! Your purple wisteria is gorgeous as are the lilacs, apple espaliers, and blue muscari. Everywhere images to remember. I'm interested to see the tee pees you use to support clematis.
Your lemon meringue tarts reminded me of the ones my Mom used to make, one of my favorites. Thanks for the memories!

What a lovely way to spend Mother's Day. I loved your napkins. When my daughter was 4 years old (she's now 17), I took a class to learn madeira applique using Martha Pullen's technique. I made her a little a line linen dress with a madeira collar. I'm going to get my notes out and try to make some of those napkins.

Martha, You really are special. To have your daughter spend the day with you is so special. I remember the happy times you had with your Mother on the show. You both were happy just to be with each other. My Mother has been gone for 23 years and I still miss her. I can't even imagine how you feel about your Mother not being here. They say if you get through the first holiday without them, it gets easier. I don't believe it. I will always miss my Mom. God bless you Martha and take care of each other (Alexis and yourself). May God watch over you and your family and friends. Mary Ann

I absolutely love the napkins in your table setting. Are you considering adding those to your Macy's line? The decorative cut edge and the bright color underneath are stunning.

I often wonder about what makes a good bagel or a good soft pretzel. Do you think Alexis would show us how to do it? That would be different and interesting. All the people outside NYC or Philly area would be able to see what they have been missing.
BTW, I watch everyday and really enjoy the show. I am looking forward to trying the chicken and dumplings that was on today. It looked so easy. I think I am going to put some carrots and celery in mine though.
Keep up the good work!

Homemade graham crackers? At 12 days postpartum that sounds absolutely divine...especially if the maker is not me. And the blue muscari makes me want to be 8 and in french braids again with nothing to do but search for the perfect specimen!
Happy mother's day.

Happy Belated Mother's Day, Martha!
What wonderful pics.
Thank you for sharing your personal life with us. Your blog is just as exciting as your show.
P.S. I saw your baked goods on your daughter's blog. Yummm!

Martha, I just love being able to see the shots of your day. Outside looks so beautiful it must be a joy to get up in the morning and just walk around to see what grew overnight. The foods and tablesetting all looked really really good. Of course you, Alexis and Kevin are looking pretty good.
I hope you do a segment on the show about the teepees and also on one of your original shows you have the tall teepees that a man built for you (he was on the show), you have them a Turkey Hill I think. Maybe you could have him on the show again. I'm sure the directions for those are in one of your early magazines.

Thank you for sharing your Mother's Day with all of us. I love the green, green grass on your property, and all the plantings are so inspiring. I've planted allium for the first time and am anxious to see how it turns out this year--no blooms yet.
My Mother's Day included finding out I'll be a first-time grandma in January!
Posted by: Deb | May 12th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Dear Martha,
I would really appreciate your suggestions- I am going to Korea for my grandson's wedding on June 6th. My daughter, his mother and I arrive there June 1st. The bride's Korean mother is making a traditional Hanbak gown and shoes for each of us.(I am soo excited)
What is an appropriate gift to give her for all of her kindness. Do you also have a suggestion for some memorable gift for the bride or bride and groom in addition to the cash gift I will be giving them?
I have admired you for many years.
A few years ago a friend of mine was having surgery. Instead of sending her flowers, I took a few of your magazines with flowers on the cover and tied them with chiffon ribbon. I mailed them to her along with a gift subscription to Living. She was thrilled.
I will be grateful for any help you can share with me.
I hope to take several photographs.

Hi Martha, What a spectacular Mother's Day you must have had! The weather cooperated to deliver a lovely day to show off your fantastic flowers, trees, grass all over your property. Your photos are absolutely vibrant with color inside and outside your beautiful home. The food looks so delicious, especially the lemon meringue pies {my favorite!}. The gift packages are outstanding and so typical of Alexis. I'll bet her baked goods were delicious. I love the photo of you and Alexis. Hi Martha,
Thank you for sharing your Mother's Day with us on your blog. I loved the tribute to your mother at the closing of your show on Friday! "Once Upon a Time" sung by your nephew Christopher ( I remember when he sang it to your mother on one of your past shows) added the perfect touch to the tribute. My mother passed away at age 88 last year,so this was my first Mother's Day without her, too. I miss her very much as I'm sure you miss your mom. God bless you, and thank you so much for inspiring all of us with your wonderful creativity!

Hi Martha,
What a loving tribute to your Mom with the crimson king maple. Your mothers day lunch looked wonderful especially the lemon meringue tart. I wonder how your lilac bush's that you purchaed last year at our Lilac Festival in Rochester New York are doing? I haven't seen them in your photos.

Posted by: Nicole | May 12th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Hi Martha,
I am glad you had a wonderful Mother's Day. I was especially touch by the tribute to your mom, I know you must miss her very much I am sorry she was not with you this year.
My mother was just diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago and it was very hard to buy her a gift and card this year. As I was shopping for a card it occurred to me that this could be the last Mother's Day that I will have her with me. How do you buy a card or gift that says all the things you want to say to your Mother, if it might be the last mother's Day gift or card that you will give her.
She loves hummingbirds and plants so I bought her a couple of hummingbird feeder and a beautiful Bougainvillea in a hanging basket and hung them right outside her window so she can sit in her recliner and watch the hummers feeding ans see the beautiful flowers.
My husband and sons cook a Mother's day dinner every year for all the mothers in our family, this year because we had so many people coming they decide to have crawfish boil instead, it was wonderful and my Mother was so happy to have all her children, grandchildren and great granchildren here to celebrate with her.
It was the happiest she look in a long time!
By the way she loves your show and so do I.
Keep on inspiring us!

My hostas should be peeking out soon, the bright vibrant green of that variety from Song Sparrow is gorgeous. You'd probably love Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton, Illinois. I used to peruse the gardens every spring when we lived near there. I particularly loved all the hosta varieties they had.

Martha:
What a blog! Where does one begin?
I'm very glad that you had such a special Mother's Day with Alexis and Kevin.
The gardens look beautiful, especially the wisteria and espaliers. The side terrace, too, seems like the perfect place to relax with the Chippendale-style garden furniture. I'm going to have to stop at Kmart!
Incidentally, I love the way you never "talk down" when designing the Kmart line, making timeless style available to customers at all price points.
I really enjoyed the shot of you and Alexis. You're looking more and more alike. Please have her on the show soon to share her homemade bagel recipe. Poppyseed is my favorite. Alexis can bake for me anytime!
Happy Mother's Day again!

Hi Martha: I just got back from the hospital where I finally had my cast removed from my left foot. I had foot surgery and it was a relief to get it off. But, unfortunately I have been diagnosed with arthritis in my left knee so that could mean a knee replacement. More surgery!!
I am so eager to get out in my own gardens. I have 25 acres and my dream is to have lots more gardens. About two acres is lawn with the house in the middle and scattered flower beds are found here and there. I don't have a greenhouse, and that is another wish of mine. I do start some plants indoors and will be transplanting my tomatoes again soon as well as some peppers, cabbages and some annuals. I have a mini greenhouse that I set up in the dining room as it has south and east facing windows so the plants get lots of light. I grew my own cabages from seed last year for the first time and my grandmother would be proud. I made home made sauerkraute from them and it is very good. I do all kinds of canning and preserves so this for me was the next logical step. I live in a zone 2b/3 so we don't have the longest growing season. I try to make the most of my garden produce, growing and pickling my own cukes, beans etc. A creek runs through the property and I want to make a natural terraced garden down to the creek and a woodland garden there too. We have trout in the creek so preserving nature is utmost in my plans. It's not uncommon to see deer in the back yard and I have a fox that likes to come for the occasional supper meal. Birds are in great abundance and I go through 50 lbs. of black sunflower seeds every couple of weeks, feeding them at the many feeders. The hummingbirds should be making their appearance soon. We only get the ruby throated hummers but they sure are a delight.
I'm glad Alexis is a baker too. I have been making my own bagels for a few years now, and once you have home made bagels there is no going back. I have passed on my interest in cooking and gardening to my daughter, and now there is a new addition to the family. I hope my granddaughter also follows in our footsteps. She is only 17 months old but it's never too soon to get them interested in helping out in the kitchen.

Dear Martha, I am happy to see that this Mother's Day was lovely for you. I also lost my Mom not too long ago, and this holiday was bittersweet for me.
Thank you so much for posting these gorgeous and inspiring photos! Also, thank you for the link to SongSparrow--I have bookmarked their site and will return often in the future, and buy plenty, I'm sure!

Martha,
You and Alexis were in my thoughts and prayers on Mother's Day. We all miss Big Martha so much. What a lovely day you had--the photographs were spectacular. Though the asparagus and cherries looked scrumptious, my favorite would have to be Alexis' baked goods. They were so beautifully presented in their beautifully chosen boxes! And your Lemon Tart...I wish I could have gone to dinner at the Warden's!!
Blessings to you,
Pamela Stump

It all looks so beautiful. It sounds like a wonderful Mother's Day. Olson's cherries are wonderful. I was born and raised in Silicon Valley (before it was known as Silicon Valley) when it was full of orchards. I remember going to the Olson fruit stand as a child and I still enjoy going there!

Hi Martha,
Thanks for sharing you Mother's Day with us! I have been wanting to contact you about a recipe my mom taught me and I grew up making...homemade ricotta cheese. In all the years I've watched your show, I've never seen you demonstrate homemade ricotta. I would love to have the opportunity to come show you and your guests how to make it from scratch and then demo how to use it for lasagna or cannoli. I hope to hear from you soon!

Yes it's sure nice to have space btwn neighbors for sure. Mine put pavers in his yard, pitched the water to me and loads up his less than a gravesite amount of dirt space with pesticides. It soo comforting to know that the water we drink just got a ton of pesticides in them without any filtration whatsoever. yes the idiot puts the pesticides in right BEFORE it RAINS!! I really become afraid when I think of how many idiots do this!!. I guess the compost I have been making for years and years and the natural predators I buy to combat garden pests just went down the drain too. If anything just be glad you and the creatures who share your space have a chance to live good chemical free lives. happy mothers day to you.

Martha,
Please, tell us more about the wonderful napkins and placemats you used on Mother's day. They were a perfect choice to go with a meal that included mellon and smoked salmon. Happy Mother's Day!

What a wonderful Mother's Day you had. Your daughter made your day so special with the beautiful gifts, especially the baked goods. I also wanted to tell you the tribute to your mom at the end of your show was so touching. I cried. I think we all felt she was part of our family as well. It was so beautiful and what memories you have of wonderful times with your mom.

Hello from the UK! This is my first comment on your blog (I'm shy!). What a beautiful day you had. Mother's Day is in March in the UK, and my 17 year old daughter gave me such a thoughtful box of assorted things that were just spot on, including a CD of songs that are special to us both, that made me cry, but in a good way. I love having a daughter....

I am glad you had a wonderful day and could spend it with your daughter. I have 2 daughters that were unable to travel to see me on Mother's Day. However, they are ever thoughtful of their mother and sent me flowers through 1-800-Flowers. Lisa did the ordering because she saw you were associated with it and knew it must be hassle-free. It has been a fiasco. She ordered Gerbera daisies in a mixture of pink, red and yellow. What I received was mums (they ran out of Gerbera daisies) and 3 daisies; one of which was broken and two that had petals falling off. All of the fern greenery was pushed down in the vase and the water was dirty. She was so embarrassed and called. They have promised her the moon and have delivered on nothing. It is Wed. and I have received no replacement flowers and they have not returned her money. I hope you will not put your name with this company as they are not reputable.

Dear Martha,
Happy Mother's Day (a little late!)
Glad you, Alexis and Kevin had a wonderful time.
Thank you for sharing your Mother's Day and your photos of your gorgeous gardens. Your wisteria is beautiful..what is the variety?
Can you tell us where Alexis gets her boxes for her baked goods?
I bet she can bake a storm...just like her Mom!!
I cried too at Big Martha's video at the end of your show. I miss seeing her but know she's watching from above.
God Bless,

Hi Martha: My Mothers Day this yr was bittersweet, as I lost my husband last July and this is the lst. without him, as he always wanted to make my day so nice. He was a retired Baptist Minister. I so miss him, my son (who by the way was born on his Fathers Birthday) asked to spend the day with me alone, his wife went to her mothers and he and I had the most lovely talk and beautiful lunch. I was so lonely but also so very blessed that he wanted to be with me. I know you miss your Mom, I do mine too, Love your show; I sit up until midnight watching it every night........ Sincerely Barbara

Martha,
I loved the TV piece dedicated to Big Martha. Thanks! I live six hours from my mom but she loved my garden themed gift: mostly gift certificates for good things for her garden. You should see her garden! Always the best!
A quick note: I have planted my condo deck container flower garden early. I have an expected busy summer with new clients for my consulting business! I love how it looks and I will take photos. Please continue your terrific garden center line at KMART. I have the bronze window box, three 12 incn bronze plastic pots with saucers and one 16 inch bronze plastic pot with saucer. I came back this spring to add to the one that worked so well last summer. I added a lovely Amelia Island folding table 20" x 19" to sit next to my white rocking chair so that I can comfortably enjoy a meal on the balcony amongst my garden. I move onto planting my 8' x 7' vegetable garden on this weekend with my experienced and helpful neighbor. Our condo association rents us the land for a reasonable price - $25 for the season! My consulting is taking off and I am grounding myself in the garden! Please stay at KMART. Your products are reachable for my budget, of the highest quality and so creative with many choices in all categories. I even treated myself to three ceramic pots on sale last weekend - the multi blue gray at 1.05 quarts. I am saving them for later summer choices and waiting for the more warm consistent New England temps - probably dahlia, portulaca, and a deep purple velvet cohlia which one of my private farmers is waiting to bring to his farm. Farmer Farnsworth suggested that I plant my lettuce seeds in your bronze window box so it sits in the deck garden snuggling up to the bottom of my planter's bench. Happy summer! Just admiring my blue azur felcitas, a variety of pink and white geranioum, shades of purple petunia, butterfly and white aisies, scavola - white and purple, bacopa - white, pink and blue, laguna, labulla, snapdragons, etc, etc.!!!

Martha,
One more comment...
What is the name of the K-Mart set you have on your patio photo in this blog? Is it from this year?
Also, please stay at K-Mart! We love your outdoor furniture and garden tools. Lately, we can't find the "Martha" green rakes, trowels, gardening soil, fertilizers, etc.. in K-Mart...please bring them back!
Thank you again for your inspiration!

Hello Martha
You look so happy on your photographs, I lost my mum 2 years ago, she was my eternal friend and she was a huge infleuence on my life. You are a successful business woman and I admire your love and compassion for animals, I am a veterinary nurse from the UK and have started my own business trying to educate pet owners and pet care professionals, as you are aware animal cruelty never fails to stop rising, if I can make a difference in the welfare of animals then I have succeeded in my mission. Please feel free to visit my site http://www.peted4u.co.uk I may not be as famous as yourself, but we both feel for animals and our mums where a huge part in our lives.
Take care.Lorraine

Can we get the recipe Alexis uses for the bagels? They look awesome and so much yummier than store-bought.

I just wonder if you ate all the homemade graham crackers, butter-butters, and chocolate caramel bars by yourself, or if you had to share so that you wouldn't eat them all! Sounds like you had a delicious mother's day. From one mother to another, happy (belated)mother's day!

Happy Belated Mothers Day! I also thought of your adorable mother and the numerous times she was on your show and was so sweet while being so proper! I really miss her and wish for you all the best now and forever! Thankyou for being the inspiration to all women to want to try to be better in all we do!

I am a new mother (just gave birth almost six months ago). It's only now that I have had the time to really surf in the net and I read your blog almost everyday. Looking at these photos makes me look forward to the next mothers' day. Thanks for sharing them.

becoming a mother was the most exciting and difficult acheivement of my life. My daughter is now 6 and smart and beautiful. I used a donor and currently have 3 embroyos frozen that I do not want to discard. Has your daughter considered the possibility of embroyo adoption? Nice thing is you can see and know the product and there would be a blood sibling. Just a thought from someone who was once crying in her pillow about the same seemingly impossible feat.

Martha - I try to watch your show daily, I t-bo it if I can't ....how about Alexis as a guest cooking her bagels......this may be a duplicate request.....and if it is all the more reason to consider it.
I have every magazine you have published. I believe I am one of your oldest standing fans, your first book got me hooked and then oh was I excited that you started your tv show. I have them on video tapes...crazy. How about packaging some of those original shows and selling them PLEASE with directories......I would pay plenty for them. PLEASE CONSIDER THAT. I like the original shows, but love the show as well.........you inspire me, you make me happy and it is wonderful to witness your survival of life and glass half full attitude....
keep up the good work.
