Come visit my blog studio at my home
UPDATE: Bloggers! Please leave a comment on this post with your name and blog address. Make sure to add a link on your blog to mine (you must do this to be reviewed!) and I will pick several of your blogs to be featured on the Martha Blog!
I thought I would take you to a pleasant and quiet area of my home in Bedford for a little tour. Welcome to my studio, which I designed in the elegantly simple and functional Shaker style. This is where I hope to set up my easel one day and return to my love of painting. In the meantime, this space is being occupied by me and my blog team, Laura Plimpton and Eliad Laskin. We love working here because it is a very calm studio-like atmosphere and there are so few distractions from the rest of the goings on at the farm.

Thanks so much for sharing part of your home with everyone. It's very well organized and inspirational. I would LOVE to paint in that studio!

I love the light in the space and also the symmetrical placement of the bird feeders. That is a great idea! I have a carriage house on my property and my daughter suggested an art studio in it (it was once a pottery studio) so this is great inspiration!

I want a blog studio like that!!
Maybe one day..................

Your studio looks wonderful. I like the feeling of a loft for inspiration, and the high ceilings make the space even more wonderful. You certainly are set up with wonderful printers. I love photography because you get to memorize the moment and save it's magic. You must really enjoy this sanctuary. Karen

Martha,
Just love your blog I read it every day before I start my day. Your blog studio, it's everything you need and it's just the right size. You amaze me as to how you can accomplish so much in just one day. I was in NY yesterday to see your show with Diane Lane it was just wonderful. All of your staff seemed very well educated as they make everything run so smoothly. It's easy to see that they get that from you.
You inspire me everyday to try new things and look out side the box.
Thank you

This must be your best blog ever! I love the 'behind the scenes' blogs. Can you show us your office and how you have that set up one day?

Your studio is a dream! I am especially fond of the Hudson photos and your inspiration board. I am a fan of inspiration boards.
I'm so jealous of your two iMacs. I have the most basic macbook, and can't wait to one day upgrade to the 'big boy!'
I'm interested in your storage for you digital photos. I really need to consider something like this as I take more digital photos than I can count.
What a wonderful studio Martha!

What a gorgeous space! I've started "archiving" my photos. I save them on an external hard drive, on an online storage space and on DVDs which I store in a firesafe offsite of our house. I'm paranoid about losing my photos. hah!

I love the restoration of the goat barn! What wonderful space. My "blog studio" is a wireless notebook PC sitting on my lap in the family room. I have a drum table with shelves in it where I hide my notebook PC and camera. Now, you've given me ideas for our upstairs walk-in attic space! I've been trying to decide whether to take up oil painting again. However, it's so difficult to setup/take down quickly. I'm trying my hand with pastels instead which is very different, but I can work on the spur of the moment. Thanks for all the inspiration, Cameron

Wonderful Studio. You don't want to see my studio! I enjoyed the picture of the bird feaders, we also love to feed the birds in our VA backyard and love the little gold finches that visit us all winter. Thanks for sharing your studio with me. I am inspired!

Great post. I love seeing the tools that people use. Which Epson printer is that? I am always looking for the perfect printer. While I love the speed of my HP 2605dn I think the quality of print from my two Epsons is better. Love to know your thoughts on this.

...okay, so this is the building that houses your birdfeeders!! I remember seeing them before on your show, as being a "birder" (birdwatcher), your setup was something I would remember, having passion for these colorful visitors. (Some aren't so colorful OR welcome, for that matter...)
Many post-ers in your blog, too, have asked what kind of camera you use, so their questions will be answered today as well.
The simplicity and clean lines of your studio enable one to remain focused, eradicating clutter in the mind! As I'm getting older, I'm actually relinquishing some cherished collections, to make room for...n-o-t-h-i-n-g! I'm finding that I really don't need it, cleaning is easier, and a better peace and calm emanates in the room. Oh...I loved the Hudson River photographs creating the skyline picture, too...I've done that before...it's really neat! I took pictures once from my upstairs windows of my garden below, taped them together - well, you get the gist...
My wish is that some mornings as you get to read your blog, that as you scroll down through, you'll actually wonder what your friend CB (you know, your undying fan in Western Maryland) has to say that day!

Your blog studio is amazing. I would love a space like that for my crafting and scrap booking. I watch your show everyday and now your blog is on my morning list of have to reads. I would love to see what your home craft room looks like. I am in the middle of trying to reorganize mine and could really use some inspiration. I have a small 10 by 10 room and trying my best to get everything in just the right place for my crafting and scrap booking.
Thank You!

Martha, it was great to see your blog studio and to see you so happy. You are an inspiration to so many people worldwide including all my daughters and daughter in law! (You actually transcend the generation gaps!) I only have one suggestion and that is solely my own perspective: A. You should have windows installed-maybe all around-to bring the outdoors in and with such fantastic outdoor scenery it would be well worth it. B. Being a garden and plant lover myself, I would suggest some beautiful plants, a variety including some tropical plants. (Plants clean the air and make you healthier as well!) C. A water fountain, a medium one not huge, that gently falls upon some beautiful rocks. (This is inspiration in itself, as many famous philosophers sat by a small rock waterfall contemplating their ideas!) D. A couple ceiling fans, that circulate the air and this will also keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It will not get so stuffy. E. A fireplace, yes I said a fireplace, nothing is more comforting and welcoming and warm than a wood burning fireplace, who knows, especially in winter you can have a nice hot cocoa while you finish your book and read your blogs. Earth, Fire, Wind and Water all the elements you need to make this studio you, Martha Stewart! So, you see, sometimes, and I mean sometimes, money can buy happiness. Honey, you can't take it with you! Why not spend it on YOU! Martha, where is the ergonomical chairs and computer equipment? I do not want you getting carpal tunnel or problems with your back. This is from a loving mom, a loving sister and loving grandmother, a loving wife, a loving aunt, a loving neighbor and church member who adores you and you truly have been an inspiration in my life. Have you thought about writing your memoirs? You need to get started on that and you need to carry with you at all times a small tape recorder and when an idea strikes you, just push the button and talk. Take care and God Bless!

Hi Martha,
I'm laughing at...'a cement floor free of manure'. Good to hear!
I think you should call that room The Great Room! You could serve a buffet meal in there for your entire crew. I'm trying to picture one of my comments up on the big screen. Gulp! No actually, it's a nice thought.
Thanks for showing us another part of your immense and beautiful property! Trish

Wow, what a beautiful space! I love the Apple setup you did. Gee, Martha, I didn't know you like to paint! I'm a food blogger, but I am also an oil painter. I hope you get to return to painting soon - although I can't imagine how you could fit it in!

Martha, your blog studio pictures made me want to take a deep breath and get creative! The openness of the room is inspiring. I never consciously thought about how important that physical feeling of spaciousness really is to our ability to open up our minds and let the ideas flow, but once I saw your pictures and listened to your comments on today's show, I could literally feel the effect! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the blog contest too. I entered mine already and I'll be anxious to read the ones you pick. Blogging is such an accessible creative outlet and everyone should do it!

A nice workspace, I am learning, is so important for producing good work. For me, having lots of natural light and a big desk are most important.

Martha, I admire your letting us see so much of your home and your farm; but don't you really somedays feel your privacy as been invaded by so many people's curious nature? I find in my small town people don't respect people's privacy. In fact some are just plain nosy. My Mother was critically ill at our home for 25 years and the people didn't even care, they just wanted to see our home and use our swimming pool. Anyway, I am awed by your open book. Nan

Dear Martha,
I am wondering what the big machine is that is located to the left of your computer in the blog studio photo. I am thinking of creating a blog at some point. I haven't as of yet looked at your internet directions on doing that. I was enjoying a chat forum on a "local" chat site on local news and then a lot of comments started becoming vulgar and off color in their comments and sadly I gave up that site. There were a couple of folks that I enjoyed commenting to. I am so glad that you and some blog sites are scrutinized and edited in their commenting. Sadly so many other sites are going bad and gettig obscene and vulgar and even r and x-rated. What do you think of the bad stuff going on in YouTube and polluting it? I think a lot of these sites need to be cleaned up!

Hi, Martha,
I enjoyed the tour of your studio with its high ceilings, smooth cement floors, work counters, and blog inspiration board. I especially like the mural created from photos you and your niece Sophia Herbert took of the Hudson River. This old goat shed transformed is certainly an "elegantly simple" and inspirational place for you and your blog team, sister Laura Plimpton and Eliad Laskin, to work in at Cantitoe Corners.
Eating at those feeders suspended all along the rear, the birds must thrive.
What a spot for your to paint!
Thanks again for the tour.

I have always admired the birdfeeders that you have. I have tried to do something simple but the bear seems to always make it over the deer fencing and get to the feeders. Do you have issue with animals on the property? How do you deal with it.

Martha not to rain on your parade but sometimes someday's never come to be. Why not get back to the painting, something you really loved to do. Just start painting again and do a little here and there when the spirit moves you, you'd be surprised how much joy you'd get out of taking that little piece of time for yourself again. The way you find joy in Yoga you might find again a great stress reliever in painting. Do a little yoga, a little painting, a ride ,a walk, and then it is worked into that HUGE schedule you keep.
Something to think about as sometimes someday gets pushed off to a back burner and forgotten.

GOT DEER? I do!
I had to rethink how I garden when we built our home and started our gardens in 2005. I blog about testing DEER RESISTANT plants in my outer gardens.
I also blog about my FRAGRANCE GARDEN, BUTTERFLY GARDEN (certified Monarch Waystation), RAIN GARDEN and COTTAGE GARDEN.
When traveling or going to see other gardens, I blog about those experiences and invite other gardeners to share a GARDEN INSPIRATION that I will post for them. My blog includes lots of GARDEN PHOTOS!
I've also created a GARDENING PORTAL...in other words, one big gardening bookmark for gardeners to easily find GARDENING GURUS (like Martha and Margaret's A Way to Garden), GARDENING NEWS, and GARDENING FRIENDS & FAVES.
Here's linking to you, Martha!

Terrific show today, as always!
I caught a question by a woman in the audience who is starting her own line of organic children's clothing. It's fantastic to see so much organic and environmental awareness these days, and you do a wonderful job promoting it.
You've had a guest on a few previous shows who is also an eco-awareness advocate, Wayne Edelman of Meurice Garment Care. He is in the forefront of honest, environmentally-aware garment care, streamlining his processes, exceeding safety standards and shrinking his business's carbon footprint a little more every day. I happen to be a big fan of his--alright, I admit it, I'm actually his wife--and I was thinking that maybe the two of you would be interested in collaborating again on some of these truly timely topics.
Warmly,

Lovely space. I wonder how you free yourself from the day to day clutter? Where's your junk mail? Your unmatched socks? Your half empty boxes of cereal? I'd love a blog post on a naughty, unorganized area of your home- something like "Martha's Junk Drawer!"

I've shared my blog link before but here it is again. I post on home decorating, baking, weddings and style---anything pretty that catches my eye, really. Feel free to come visit!

I love your blog studio! That is such a great idea to have a blog inspiration board
Posted by: Melissa | September 24th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
You are so funny Martha. I love that you don't just do something. You do it the "wish stick" way. I have a blog for my online lingerie boutique and each week I just come up with 2 to 3 story ideas in a list and then maybe do a repeat theme story. For instance, I pair up what items in the boutique would suit certain famous people.
It is neat to see a little bit of your process. Having a separate space for blogging is an interesting idea.
Anyway, the story board is awesome. And, this blog is awesome. I can see how such a thorough job can be done with your set up. I think the minimalist room works well because you are working with so many images.
I love that you like taking pictures so much. It makes it really fun for us. The gallary upgrade you did to the blog was totally worth it.
Thanks for motivating me.

So how does this studio work in the winter? Wood stove, hats and mittens and Martha up an hour earlier to shovel a path......
Must have been quite the goat herd.

A blog studio! What fun. My blog studio is a small room that my husband & I have both our computers in. It's not really a blog studio but I do read & post here along with other business & personal posting & paperwork. I do have a sewing studio though & I'm right in the process of stripping wallpaper, painting & making it pretty. I haved loved watching your shows & reading your publications : )

This is certainly an absolutely beautiful working studio. How will it be heated in the winter? Is it air-conditioned for the summer?
I would love to see the photo panoramas on the wall up close because I can tell the stitching is not seamless. I would suggest that the next time you do this that you use either the panorama feature in Photoshop CS3 or a piece of inexpensive software called PanoramaMaker. Of course, there are simple techniques you could use next time you photograph such a scene whether a cityscape or landscape. By the way, I have no connection except as a user of the two pieces of photo-editing I mentioned.
I enjoy reading your blog.

Thanks for the ongoing inspiration and fun ideas. I also love the question and answer session that you have on each of your shows. I have learned so much from your show.

The inspiration board is my favorite part of your room. You are fortunate to have so much space. My officio (office + studio) is a former bedroom with little space for printers, computers, loveseat, cd player and, of course, the television.
I don't see how you have time to blog. Don't you just love it?

I was so thrilled when you started a blog Martha. I have been blogging for about 1.5 years now and I can't go a day without it. I have made the most amazine network of blog friends. I share my favorite blogs with my daughters and that has been a wonderful bonus to blogging. My youngest wants to be an illustrator and I can show her blogs of real people that do that for a living and she gets an inside peek to their worlds and can see that they are just regular people. It helps her see that she can be like them one day. Keep bringing the posts on, I love them all.

Hi Martha~What a great studio! I am so curious to see what your painting style is. I have an idea about your colors. I do wish you would look at the new colors on my website and tell me if you like them. The rainbow style Longaberger Cake basket and triangle basket. There is a carrying purse in those colors too. I do remember you got that beautiful basket in the camp blog. I hope you have a great day. If I ever get a blog going it will be about children's art.

Wow! I have been a huge fan for years. A fan of your creative spirit - but I think the way you INADVERTANTLY mentioned Obama today and LEFT OFF MCCAIN's NAME was inexcusable! You should be ashamed. That was very tacky! and quite a dig to Sarah Palin, too. Gee - I guess you are quite the Democrat.

Martha, I've been so jealous of your farm. And now even more so that you have a separate studio from which to blog! My husband, Paul Gillin, has written 2 books on social media and speaks regularly on the topic. He often uses BunnyBlab.com as an example of a niche market with a dedicated audience when he speaks to marketing groups. Guess it doesn't hurt that 2 of my BunnyBlab podcast episodes have gotten over 2,000 downloads!
Keep up the good work with your great social media-inspired site and your blog! You're an inspiration to so many people. Thank you!

Hello Martha:
Have a great day!!
I love your show and I listen to it everyday at work. I was listening the other day, when a lady asked about 'having a split on the top of her banana bread'. Well, it just so happens that I have a solution for her. Ask her if she drinks coffee and still buys coffee in a tin can. If so, when it's gone, keep the can and use it as her pan. My grandmother use to make it in Folger coffee can. She would make it, pour it in the can and put it in the oven upright. About 10 minutes before it's done, you can also tip the can on its' side and cook it for the rest of the 10 minutes. I loved how her banana bread was so evenly cooked and it works great for slicing.

Hi Martha,
I'm blogging from Vancouver Island, Canada. I hope that you'll visit my blog. I was born in Québec in a very French family that has strong traditions. I started blogging in French but soon found out that my visitors were mostly Anglophone. I made tons of friends through blogging. It made my move easier one year ago. My husband was in the military and we did move 7 times and this time around blogging helped me go thru that move emotionally.
I love your blog and come visit every morning with my cup of coffee. There is about 300 food blogs that I visit around the world.

Martha; You need an Epson 7800 Pro printer. We have one and its 24 inches wide and its amazing. I first saw it used at the 2006 Photokina Show in Colonge. They now made them up to 64 inches wide, amazing. We have been using it for 2 years now and it produces better images than our pro lab and they are archival for almost 100 years.

I have to say that one of your most appealing qualities is that you are always kind of thrilled with what you are doing or learning. In the picture of you and your blog room you look delighted with it. On your t.v. show you asked for people to be kind as you had not yet had the advantage of makeup and hair attention. You look terrific-like a teenager only better!

What I would give to have a blogging space...
I currently blog from my bed. It's sounds silly, but with four little girls it's the only space that is (mostly) mine. I'm comfortable here in my room, lots of fresh air, and usually a few free moments.
On occasion, I find myself blogging "on location" for vacation or for instance tomorrow I'm blogging a day full of apples (applesauce, apple-cider, apple chips.) Can you tell it was a wonderful year for our apple trees?

Most entries are funny, but some are categorized otherwise... like the time Victoria drank stain remover and a few other things all within a couple days... glad to see you're in the bloggin world!

You have just inspired me to get back to posting on my blog. The last post was about how to make Cube Steak (my grandmother's recipe) and I have to add the one with her making black beans and rice and more.

It's not often you get to see where someone blogs...especially you Martha!
what a space...can;t wait to see what happens when you set up the easel again.
If i were to show my blogging space, it would be in bed, at the kitchen table, in my studio, while I should be working at my desk, late night while watching TV...and my blog team are absolute blogging animals as well! (literally, 2 cats, Icky and Maxine...)

It's owned and updated by one HIP CHICK! Her name is Morgan Moore. She's crafty, an exqusite cook, artsy and crazy about her family! She's INCREDIBLY talented and so HUMBLE! I'm so glad she shares herself with the world! It's quite simply the BEST BLOG out there!

I love the first picture of you in the wee hours getting another post in. I call myself a "jammie gardener". I think you are maybe a "jammie blogger"...but, then again, I suspect many of us are!
I hate to say it, but if I had the choice between a goat shed and a blogging studio, I'd choose a goat shed. I live in suburbiaville, Sacramento, CA. I tell my husband I want some goats and he doesn't quite get it.
That's why I love Martha. She gets it all.

What a gorgeous workspace. We don't have nearly enough space to put together a wonderful studio like that. Although, I'm not sure that if we did that it would get much use. I have my own tiny blogging and work space in a corner of my husband's basement office but I usually end up balancing my mac book on the arm of the sofa. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have been reading craft blogs for the past few years as I found it was the absolute best way to find novel craft ideas. Now I have started my own blog as a way to keep in touch with friends, and to catalogue my interests. I'm always looking for tips, ideas and inspiration. A great many have come from you already, and I see there will be many more to come. Wishing you all the best! Keep up the fantastic work:)

Love the studio--wouldn't it be great if libraries or similar studios could rent space to view, print, share digital photos. I wouldn't mind paying a (nominal) fee to utilize equipment in a library to print photos. I find it challenging creating an archival system for all the CD's, index cards, photos, negatives, etc. Any ideas out there?

Making art in my printmaking studio was heavenly. Now I can do photography and so I do; you'll find some of my recent and "nearly" recent pix albums on my blog. My poetry, too. So, Martha, I'm 68, I've been your fan for so long now and I'm so proud of you, still out there doing what you need to do to stay "Martha". Being a woman this age (68) has it's not so great days.
Losing Paul Newman. I feel such a loss and I didn't get to "do" anything but send $$, but a being a friend of kids as Paul Newman defined that...
You've fought for your life, Paul Newman had a tough fight through his, and me through mine.
That makes the garden, the rose, the beautiful blades of grass, the trout lillies in Spring, the water breaking loose and splashing down the rill, a friends' car coming down the driveway, or leaving the office after a tough day and feeling great about what you've accomplished, or just blue sky, or just rain, all the things you get up in the morning for-you share your way through it all with me, with us, and so now, blogging, we can share too.

Check my blog for descriptive work too. There's a photo of your farm at twilight encased in a narrative of mine as an example.
Would love to help you with your stunning work.

so organized and wonderful!
I really have you to thank for inspiring me to follow my creative spirit. 13 years ago I began to watch you daily following rehab from an accident. Your love and passion for beautiful things, antiques, nature, animals, and making things by hand, seeped into my soul and planted seeds.
So anytime I have said " I really Love Martha Stewart", people assume I am a serious cook , in a perfect house that is totally organized.
They have it wrong on all those points, but those who see the beauty in most things and love animals , always get it!
Thank you for being you.

Hi. Thought you might like to take a peek at the picture your Francesca and the Blue Agave I posted on my kid's gardening blog. Now here's a question on organizing my studio/office...being a bit batty in the area of magazines and books...sort of a hoarder...and living in a rather small house, I feel the moral need to get rid of them so I can make way for living. Even getting rid of my MSL's and my Swedish "Skona Hem" and my BBC garden mags...there's only so much room for saved articles, and so much time to oversee this "collection". I think Martha would say dump it. Am I right? But, how can I? Sigh...

Hello, Martha,
What a lovely blog studio you have!! I'm a fairly new blogger having begun at the end of May of this past year. I began blogging following the passing of my dad. If you were to visit my blog you find that he and my mother inspired me, nurtured me and let me be creative. I tried to instill that in my children and in the classes I teach whether they are volunteer opportunities or paid ventures (giggling here as there are not so many of those but lots of volunteering). My great grandmother's name was Martha and during a time when I worked at a living history farm (near Minneapolis) I "took" the name Martha in her honor. Interestingly, I also learned from a younger member that summer of '95 about "the other Martha" - you. Molly was planning a wedding and your ideas provided inspiration as she planned her wedding. I do hope you will check out my blog. It is "evolving". I have so much to share and more to come so please take a peek. And if you do, "Percy Pumpkin" will be there to greet you!

I live in Germany and we have recently renovated part of our cellar into two offices, one for my work-from-home husband and the other for me! Having seen your lovely photos, I think I should post some of my new study, which is all white floors and walls and lots of bookshelves. Until now, my office has also been my lap and it's exciting to have a space of my own, to blog and also to work on the novel I am writing.
I blog at http://www.charlotteotter.wordpress.com. I would love it if you stopped by for a visit.

Hi Martha:
This is nothing short of spectacular. What a fantastic space. I like the simplicity and clean lines of the design and layout. The windows high above for light but not to glare in your eyes while working, very smart.
Would you come design my artist studio? Just kidding. Thank you for posting these photos. Your blog studio is a beautiful workspace, congratulations.
A few years ago, when things were getting rough for you, I sent you a few of my children’s books as a gift and a note to let you know how much inspiration you have, (and continue to) provide me. I do not know if you remember this, but you sent me a nice thank you letter for the gift. I thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do so and believe it or not, I have it framed in my studio.
Cheers,
Jimmy Pickering
p.s. There was only room for one website on the post so I placed my blog there. I also have a website which is http://www.jimmypickering.com

Hi Martha,
I've never commented here before, but I feel as if I am talking with you personally, which has such great meaning for me, knowing that you may read this.
I know there are millions of people who look up to you and feel so inspired by you, and I am just another of those. However, I still have to tell yout hat I've been following your creations and the life you have shared with the world. Every time I feel like it's silly to follow my creative side or to give up on my hopes and dreams to create the life I've dreamed of-- I see your books on my shelf or watch your show(s)--and I feel energized and inspired again, and again and again. You have really impacted and changed my life in ways you may never know.
As a side detail, your popularity has actually made my "domestic" side (he love of all things with food and homemaking) acceptable to my peers of my age group (early 30's) where before they used to think it was strange that I loved to cook, serve, entertain. What a turnaround!
Thanks again, Martha. And please-- keep on sharing with us! Your blog makes all the difference.

Dear Martha,
Every day I rush home from work to watch your program.I live in a large country town in Australia called Orange on 5 acres. we built a Connecticut inspired house and our garden has evolved in the last 4 years in a way that I imagine it would look like if we were in Connecticut. You are an inspiration "down-under" too. In 2009 we hope to come to NYC and visit your show, next month we head off to Paris for 10 days. I hope I can watch you speaking French!

Two questions........
Did you ever get your instructions on the knitting machine??? Have you used it???
Have three that belonged to my Mother, and still prefer the hand knitting. Love the feel of the yarn!
And two, a few years ago I made the pillows using ???some kind of hulls, but I can`t remember what kind! HELP! Can remember getting them at the local AGWAY store ....two large bags! Want to make them again for friends for the Holidays.
Thank you for any info!

Hi Martha,
My wife does not know that I am sending this message. Christina is an amazing mother, wife, cook, and artist. Her focus for the past 8 years has been with our 3 children. Now that they are getting older, she now has the opportunity to expand her creative and artistic talents. I wanted to share with you a small sample of her abilities via her blog. Christina has been a professional mural artist for 16 years. I am very proud of my wife and your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
