Getting the Acorn Award
On Saturday, September 27, I had the great pleasure of attending the 10th anniversary Founders' Dinner of the Native Plant Center, a project of the Westchester Community College Foundation in New York State. The Native Plant Center (NPC) was founded 10 years ago as the first recognized affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas by Marybeth Weston Lobdell, Marie Smith Schwartz, and Betsy May Stern, who were members of the Board of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in 1998. There are now 22 national affiliates. I am so happy to report that I was presented with the NPC's new Acorn Award, which recognizes an individual or group that inspires people to learn about native plants and to grow them in their own environments. With that being said, please enjoy my photos of the event. For information about the Native Plant Center visit HERE.

Congrats to you on the new Acorn Award Martha! The blouse is a gorgeous color! I bet it was a wonderful time for you.

Hi Martha, What a lovely evening all of you must have had at the fabulous event at the Westchester Community College. How wonderful and deserving that you received the Acorn Award. You look fantastic in your lovely Ralph Rucci blouse. It's so nice to see your dear friends, co-workers and others who attended the event. I can only imagine how wonderful it was to meet President Johnson's daughter, Lynda. She certainly resembles her mother and is very tall like her father. Ill bet she really enjoyed the brunch at your beautiful home. The wonderful food from your garden looks absolutely scrumptious! Thanks for letting us enjoy the event through your fantastic blog! Jan

Once again, Martha, my heart is palpitating!...mainly due to the subject matter of your award. What an honor! (And) what beautiful people! It is sooooo neat to see these folks assembled, with like minds, having the love of gardening and the perpetuation of Lady Bird's legacy. Some portions of our highway system here in my Maryland town have been planted in wildflowers in the wide grassy median, and it makes me happy to see that as I drive along.
I've always been interested in joining a garden club but can't seem to find the time. (This is why I think many members are retirees - they have the time to devote! [grin]) I also aspire to achieve the Master Gardener certification (someday) through our county cooperative extension office. We finally have the program available now in our county but the classroom hours are currently during the business day. This has always been a point of interest for me. ("If it's to be, it's up to me"!!)
Your table for Lynda's brunch was so nice! (and yes, "Lynda Bird" IS looking like her mother, isn't she? - I noticed that, early in the photos). Your garden's bounty, Martha, was absolutely beautiful (and I'm not just giving you lip-service here - I mean it from my heart!) - the colors of the berries/flowers/radishes all together - well, they were a beautiful, rich array - a true feast for the eyes. (And your dinner plate dahlias!...omgoodness!) (Have you ever just stood in the supermarket in the produce section and were just in awe of all the different colors on display?!!...folks, try to remember to notice the next time!...)
Except for holding my dear, sweet Edgar-cat in the evenings on my lap, your blog, Martha, is my most favorite part of my days!
I reiterate how much you are loved!

What a gorgeous blouse!
I lived in Austin for 19 years, just moved away a year ago, and I miss it. The LadyBird Johnson Wildflower Center is really awesome.

Hi Martha,
You are definitely most deserving of the Acorn Award but I'm surprised you're just getting one now. You've been inspiring me to garden for a long time and your Gardening 101 book has been out since 2000. Well, maybe there's a waiting list.
No doubt Lynda Robb felt right at home on your spacious farm and I bet she loved the horses. These are the things that impress me about you; you might have been out collecting eggs in the chicken coop, then maybe you cut all those dahlias and pulled a few carrots while you were outside and then you sat down to brunch with the daughter of a former president and a few other guests. All in a day's work, huh Martha! Fantastic! Trish

Today Martha asked if there was a faster way to cook potatoes for mashed potatoes. I use a small pressure cooker and cook mine in five minutes. Its a great time saver.

I think that the Ralph Rucci blouse is beautiful - a great fabric, color and design for you. I like it as much as the golden gown that you wore at the opening of the Metropolitan Opera evening. You look so tall and slender in that blouse and it shows your beauty. I was wondering about where you found that lovely brooch.
Congratulations on the acorn award. It is great to remember Lady Bird Johnson's legacy to the country. She was years and years ahead of her generation in vision, action, and her belief in public service. It is important to remember her.
