A Snowy weekend, see my very own photos from the farm
A winter wonderland at my farm!
Last Friday, around eleven AM, snow began to fall. It became quite a storm and the snow fell all night long. Waking up on Saturday, everything was covered in white and it was very beautiful. Come and see the pictures I took. I hope the snow lasts for Christmas

Up here in Canada we have a lot of snow too. It looks pretty but the sidewalks can be slippery even when they are shoveled.
Have a happy Christmas.

Merry Christmas Martha.
It is lovely to see photos of your property, and the snow has made your home look even more beautiful. I hope that you will show us some of your decorations from inside your house - especially after teasing us with the wreaths the other day. Whilst bonsai's are lovely, they aren't screaming "Christmas" to me!

This winter weekend is beautiful in Boston too. Your land and horses are so lovely. I do not ever remember a white Christmas. It will get warm at the end of the week which is hard to believe with these Monday morning temperatures. I am baking breads, crackers and cookies over the next three days. Your holiday magazines and the online site have offered such great ideas. Thank you..and of course the BAKING handbook has taught me how to do my first breads. I used Thanksgiving as a trial run. The response has inspired me to do all homemade baked goods as gifts this year. The packaging ideas really kicked it up a notch and the products at Michaels. For New Years I am using Lucinda's artichoke side dish. The breads from the handbook that I have chosen are the Whole Wheat Honey and the French Baguette. From the holiday magazine I am using the Rosemary Parmesan crackers. And I always use the Toll House chocolate chip cookies recipe but this year I am also doing your gingersnaps. From the January issue I have been inspired to do a New Year's eve party, a new routine plan - that article was so helpful, and to take control of my work space at the home office part of the condo. Wishing you, your family, friends and wonderful staff a great white holiday season!

Oh, how much I envy you. In my region due to climate changes we haven't seen snow for at least 8 years. You seem to have white Christmas this year. How wonderful!

Martha:
What wonderful Winter photos you sent. You sure have a way of describing life as it is through your photographs.
Our Wisconsin Winters have arrived early this year. Already we have had 25" of snowfall. We have to keep digging out snow from the outdoor Christmas decorations on a daily basis.

What a beautiful ride I had with you. Your property is like heaven on earth. I never see snow like that here in Georgia, and I have always wished for a white Christmas. Why cover some boxwoods and not others? I have one very large boxwood, but I guess we don't have to cover them here in the South.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas, Martha, and your family and friends, too. I pray that 2009 will be happy and prosperous for all of us.

Truly awesome! We had snow in Houston a few weeks ago. My daughter was able to make a snowball about the size of a marble! It was so, so sad. I am envious of all your wintry beauty there. -- Your best blogs are the ones about your home, please do more.

Martha,
I'll need to come back to this blog entry to see all the photos!
Wondering about the corn cribs...what's their function? To hold corn?
Also, loved the update on the chickens! Their houses look great...I'd love to have the blueprint. Needing to build the right kind of house for my hens and rooster.
Beautiful photos of Cantitoe in the snow. Some winter, huh? Happy Solstice and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
P.S. Sending all of our tropical temps. your way!

Thanks for the photos, they are wonderful.
We had ten inches of snow here in Tennessee
in 1993 and everything came to a halt. I'm sure
you had more than ten inches. It is truly
beautiful to look at, but I'm nervous driving
in the snow. I loved the idea of "taking" us
on your ride.

Nothing like a blanket of snow covering the Earth on Christmas morn. Candles glowing and a warm and welcoming fire burning brightly in a fireplace seems more magical when everything is covered in white.
Happy Holidays to you and your Family!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures with us. Your home is so beautiful with all the snow. We loved our 3 hours of snow here in New Orleans. Just enough to make a snowman and have snowball fights then it was gone. We can only wish for snow like yours. Thank you for all you have taught us this past year. Between your show and books I have learned so much and made my life so much more enriched. Everyone in the family is very excited to get your new cooking book for Christmas. I have been busy baking for everyone and using your crafts at Michaels and Walmart. It has made everything so easy and look like it took forever. I hope you have a great Christmas with Alexis and enjoy your time together at the spa. Here is to another great year of cooking and crafting in 2009. I can't wait.

The symmetrical view of the white pines is so...what shall I say, symmetrical. What a great picture but so are the rest of them! Why didn't someone take a picture of you? I think the last time I was in snow was back in '84 and my thoughts were like those of your donkeys and the chickens; let me get inside!
Enjoy your holidays with Alexis and if you are home on Christmas Day, may it be a white one! Trish
P.S. Happy holidays to you too Laura, and of course Eliad also.

I wish I could post photos of our place for you to see. We have gotten three FEET of snow in the last week. We are buried. It is still snowing too. It is quite a sight. The icicles on the house are more than a foot long. I can only see the top rail of our fence. And it is COLD. Eight degrees. We are keeping warm by getting the baking done. Cinnamon rolls for the neighbors and the kids are going to make cookies for their cousins.
Merry Christmas!

Martha,
What did you wear for gloves so your hands would stay warm yet you could handle a camera and the reins? Mingmar looks like he could use two pair of gloves.
If I had to bundle up like that to ride a horse I think I would be herding sheep or driving cows to convince myself to do it.

Hi Martha, Thank you so much for this fabulous tour of your farm, on horseback, after the first snowfall. I absolutely love your photos and commentary. Everything looks pristine, but very cold. We have had huge snow storms here in the Puget Sound area and I can only estimate the depth because of the blizzard conditions on Saturday and Sunday. It has only been above freezing one day since last Sunday. Rather unusual for a marine climate. I really enjoyed the Wedding Cakes program and Leisl and Kevin's Wedding on The Style Network this weekend. Hope your snow last through Christmas. The weather people are predicting that our snow will last the rest of the year. Brrrrrrr!!!!!!!! Jan P.S. The local news just said we had 8 to 12 inches of snow here in the Seattle area! Jan

...look at Ramon's pretty face! - frosted whiskers-n-all...what a beautiful boy! (ALL the animals are beautiful creatures!)
THESE PICTURES!...they were (once again!) wonderful! With the leaves off the trees, we really get a different vantage point being able to see thru the trees! (And) as you pointed out, Martha, it's hard to believe you're using colored film, as most everything came out black-n-white. The sky as you were out-n-about DID look ominous, as if Mother Nature wasn't done performing her magic! I genuinely take interest in your tree varieties and especially enjoyed seeing certain stands and plantings that I didn't remember from earlier photos (beech, larch, and your new spruce plantings - they're going to turn into n-i-c-e trees in 5-10 years!)
It's hard to believe that 4-hours distance can make so much difference climate-wise! Your precipitation resulted in a major winter storm for the northeast, whereas ours in Maryland was a rain event - cold, cold rain, with temps rising just above freezing (38-40). This morning, though, was a different story...we woke up to 11 degrees, with 20-30 mph westerly winds that gave us fair warning yesterday afternoon. (The leaves! - in my [once pristeen!] yard and flower beds!) (BIGbig sigh - here we rake [go] again!) Ironically, warmer temps are due again near the end of the week (40 degrees is warm, folks, in the wintertime!)
Well, have a wonderful Christmas and Hanukkah, Martha! (I took one of the quizzes about your favorite family holiday traditions and learned you recognized and perhaps may celebrate both.)
Grace and peace,
=^..^=

Loved the pics. We've not had a good snow here in Asheville in the last few years. I think the mountains break up the clouds or something. Nice to see someone is having a good ride in the snow! Have a great Christmas.

I've been a fan for many years and have your magazines going back to when they were first published (I think in the 80's sometime). Merry Christmas to Martha and all!
I have been looking at the lovely photos of your farm, in the snow and can imagine how beautiful it must be. I live in Brisbane Australia and the weather here is quite different. We are having varied temperatures from 27c-35centigrade. Thats rather Warm! I have to say how much I love your web site and your show.It is my homepage and its a lovely way to start my day.
Last Christmas we were in the United States and what a wonderful time I, my husband and children Tom & Grace had. We visited the west coast. There is so much to see and we'll save some for the next trip. Favourite place was Yosemite National Park. Such natural beauty.
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family and all your Christmas wishes come true.

Hi Martha - I noticed that you have a bit of of a sore throat which is to be expected this time of year and especially with as many people as you come in contact with.
About 8 years ago I woke up just after midnight in Las Vegas with a blazing sore throat and was scheduled to speak the next morning.
I went down to the bar and had the bar tender mix a tall glass of fresh orange juice with about 8 splashes of tabasco sauce. I drank it down immediately.
When I woke up in the morning, the sore throat and laryngitis were gone!
I now won't get on board an airplane without dropping an Airborne tablet in a tall glass of water - it has saved me from contracting viruses that are so prevelant when sequestered among many people.
My brother Tony was such a big fan of your and I have enjoyed watching you this year becauses it makes me feel close to him, even though he has passed away.
Take care, Sharyn

Martha,
When you post beautiful photos like this of your farm, I get so inspired. Cantitoe Corners is a place of such beauty. If you haven't done so already, you should commission a talented painter to do landscapes of the property.
Beautiful, snowy scenes! Up in Canada, it's the same situation.

Dear Martha,
Needless to say I am blown away by the beauty of your snowy farm... it is amazing, just what my sore eyes needed to see today. In Egypt today it is clear skies and sunny but rather cold. What I would give to ride through your grounds on those be.u.ti.ful horses, you cannot imagine. Thank you so much for allowing us into your private space, it is awesome to behold. Hello Martha! Wow-Your place looks alot like where we live! We have been hit pretty hard this year-we are just a little northeast of Seattle in the foothills, and we have never seen this much snow at one time. It will be a magical white Christmas! Yay! I enjoyed your photos-very nice! I love it when there is snow, with the fireplace a going, hot coca to sip, and baking cookies with my family. What more could a mom want!?!? I am a happy girl!
Wishing You and Your Family a Very Merry Christmas!

Absolutely phenomenal snowfall you have there, Martha. Here in Vancouver we have had similar snowfalls...breaking records for the temperatures as well. I have a very ornamental looking garden and i love how the snow sculpts itself around the shrubs and trees, etc. We are pretty much guaranteed a white Christmas...apparently the last one was in 1998...so quite a treat...even though we have had to dig ourselves out many times over!
Merry Christmas to you...enjoy your spa vacation!

I truly enjoyed seeing your OWN photos of your gorgeous landscape. Seeing the photos of your awesome Fresians has inspired me to ride our Mtn. horses next time it snows! Our weather has been such a roller coaster here in Kentucky, but at least it's not boring! Thank you for your continued inspiration, and Merry Christmas.

Going through the snow photos you took made me remember what winter was like growing up on our farm in upstate New York. I love the old apple tree and the donkey photos, and was fascinated by the way the snow melts leaving little islands in the streams.
Here in Kentucky, we don't have so much snow, so it was a treat to get a sneak peek at what's going on up north now.
It was all so lovely that I've put a note about and link to your photos in my daily gardening blog for our local newspaper in Lexington, Kentucky. You had a great idea... thank you for taking us along for the ride ... Susan

Hello Martha,
It is so very nice to see such a beautiful view of winter at your home.
I am a Canadian that has seen some very cold winters as well as some very warm ones spent in Florida as a teenager with family and friends.
You have been quite an inspiration for me in this last year. I picked up your book "The Martha's Rules" at a time when I was contemplating building my own business. Your encouragement, your memoirs, your insightfulness and your examples have encouraged me to push forward with my dream.
I opened my store in a little town in Ontario, Canada, Ridgeway to be exact. This little town is very close to Fort Erie and Buffalo. In fact Ridgeway is considered part of the town of Fort Erie, Ontario. It is under their jurisdiction. My shop is a shop for Elegant Casual Country home decorating with some giftware thrown in for good measure. We opened on September 27th, 2008 with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Mayor of Fort Erie preciding. With the economy being the way it is I feel we still are doing very well. It is not in the millions but it is money I didn't have yesterday so that is more then I had.
My dream and goal is to become like you but in the Casual Elegant Country home decorating world.
I am so going on here and all I really wanted to do was say a very BIG THANK YOU to you. I admire you and respect you and all your wisdom. Thank you for your encouragement.
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a very Prosperous Happy New Year.
Again, Thank you

Hi Martha!!! Merry Christmas!! My husband and I just opened our gifts, and I received your new cookbook. He is continuing on the tradition of my mom who passed two years ago. She always got me your cookbooks for Christmas. I love the new book!!! I love all of the terminology, and the how-to pictures are great. I like the Joy of Cooking, but sometimes I would look for a definition of a cooking term and it wouldn't be in there. I love that you have the different cooking terms. Thanks for this great book. I couldn't wait to get it.
Have a Merry Christmas Martha and a Happy New Year.
