My new adopted fluffy Himalayan cats!
A very sad consequence of the economic downturn is that animal shelters everywhere are filling up with the pets that many people can no longer afford to feed and care for.  So many of these animals are sweet and loving and would make wonderful companions for individuals or families willing to adopt them. I urge anyone wanting a pet to check out their local shelters, as there are more and more very desirable animals to be found there. Â
As many of you know, I love fluffy Himalayan cats and I have been considering adding a couple to my family. It came to my attention, recently, that ARF, the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, had two blue-point Himalayans.  Apparently, the family that gave them up had some allergy issues, so I decided to drive out to the Hamptons, on Long Island, and pay a visit to these little cats. I was introduced to Miss Snowflake and Sir Frost and I decided to adopt them. I like to call them Snow and Frost – it seems less formal. These cats are going through a transitional phase, getting used to their new surroundings and the rest of my menagerie. They have been rather timid and shy. But, as they open up and feel more comfortable, I will share more photos of them soon.  Â

It is extremely sad that so many, including animals, are going to be so badly affected by the current financial woes. Everyone who can, should do what they can to help. I applaud you for doing so. Who could resist Snow and Frost - their names suit them perfectly. I hope they settle in soon to their new home.

Animal shelters are special places, with staff and dedicated volunteers who are true animal lovers. We strongly believe that adopting an animal from a shelter is saving a life. These animals have so much love to share with their new families.
Thank you, Martha, for promoting shelter animals; so many are victims of the faltering economy now.
(Our shelter "pound puppy" as we call her is 14+ years---we love her dearly, every single day. She continues daily to enrich our lives.)

Hi Martha, I've enjoyed the photos of your lovely Himalayans. Thank you so much for encouraging people to adopt "shelter/pound" animals. It's heartbreaking to see the number of loving creatures that suffer, even in good times, but in the hard times that many are faced with lately the pets are deprived of the love of family and sadly, sometimes life. Again, thank you for your efforts.

What does it say under the kitty? "Martha couldn't sleep. It was well into July and not only had she misplaced the recipe for the Halloween Creep Cakes, she hadn't even begun the beaded snowflake ornaments."
Haha, Adorable.
Those kitties are super cute at the ARF. Good job on adopting Martha! Lead by example.

Glad these cats found a good home with you Martha. I wish we could adopt them all, so many cats, dogs, rabbits, horses and many other animals in need of good homes. One by one & sometimes two at a time some are lucky and some never find a home and that is the saddest thing of all.
Senior pets need adopting too so I am glad you took home these two 8 year olds,. Frost and Snow goes great with your farm in winter doesn't it? The other day on your show you and Joey had a heck of a time getting Frost was it out of the carrier lol!
I am not a cat person but am so glad others are and will adopt them from shelters around the country.
Thank you for adopting these two very lucky cats, and you are lucky Martha they will give you lots of love for years to come.

We adopted an 8 year old, beautiful female Shitzu from the Humane Society of Clearwater, Florida, after my mother's other old Shitzu went to sleep with the angels. It makes you wonder what happened to her human companion(s) that they had to give away a dog they've had for eight years, but many times older folks pass away and there is no family to take the dog.

The kitties are so beautiful with their fluffy coats! I wish I weren't allergic because I love them
The day you brought them on the show I was laughing so hard when Snowflake wouldn't come out of the carrier! That was so funny and part of what being a pet owner (as you know) is all about!
I hope they get settled in very soon and am always glad to hear of shelter animals being adopted!

Hopefully, the previous owners saw Frost on your show the other day and were happy to see that they have a new and loving home. I am sure they hated to part with these two beautiful animals. I think they resemble Teeny and Weeny a little bit; so sweet! Trish

Blessings to you, Frost and Snow..so beautiful! I am looking forward to watching the cupcake show today. I made the Boston Cream Pie Cupcake recipe yesterday for the local Inaugural Party held by our local Democratic town committee while I attended a fun ball in Boston. It was my contribution to the committee which I am a part. I am waiting to hear from friends what they thought of the recipe. I tasted one and loved the taste. The February issue is chock full of great ideas and recipes. I thank you and your staff for a great winter read.

I having a neighbor who lives on a large ranch. She probably feeds a ton of food every two months. Cats find her haystacks and she finds them. Her husband knows better than move any hay bales/hay stacks once she has declared them cat havens. He just buys for semi-truck loads of hay.
I would take all the cats out of the animal shelters to her except shelter cats are not supposed to be allowed outdoors.

Martha, I was so excited to watch your show to finally find out what type of cat I have. I went outside one day to find this beautiful cat on my patio. I had never seen it around before and I thought it might belong to one of our new neighbors. After checking with them and the local pound, no one claimed her.She was very nervous at first but now acts like a queen. My son calls her Diva! We're thinking someone might not have been able to care for her and they left her at my house. She could be a twin to Frost! Now I want to learn how to care for her properly. Thanks Martha...enjoy your new additions.......

Thank you, thank you! First the Obamas and now Martha--hopefully with your examples more people will adopt from shelters. Too many think that surrendered animals have 'issues' and would rather buy a 'perfect' pet. Because of you there is more discussion, which should lead to more adoptions of these WONDERFUL pets!!

Your two new additions to your menagerie are as fortunate to have found you as you are to have found them. There are so many deserving animals waiting for homes and love in pounds and rescue centers around the world. If only more people reached out their hearts and arms to them as you have!
All three of my cats are rescues; my Sealpoint Ragdoll, Dulce, from the Humane Society, my Russian Blue, Sparkle, from "Mewtopia" in Memphis, and the baby of the family, an orange and white Tabby, Maxine, was nursed back to health by a friend after the mauled kitten showed up at her door. A fourth, a big, fluffy tom showed up a few weeks ago and is in the process of adopting me. The three females think they don't want a brother, but he is winning my heart. If he knew the purpose of a litter box he'd be inside with the others now!

(...Frosty!...Snowflake!...here kittykittykitty... =^..^= )
Well, as many of your readers can imagine, I'm loving your blog today, Martha! I saw Frost on Friday's show last week...hope he and Snow get acclimated really soon there at your home, so they can be an active part of your wonderful family! I would get absolutely nothing done around the house in a day's time, as all I would do is play with, and talk to, and hold anything on my lap that would permit it... I talk to my cats all the time, explaining what I'm doing, or eating, or where I'm going and when I'll be back. I absolutely l-o-v-e to hear their voices - one (Edgar) mrrrows freely, the other (Mandy) doesn't - I try to encourage them to talk to me, but each has his/her own method of communicating, and that's what's really neat!...I am really tuned in to them as individuals, with v-e-r-y different personalities.
How old are your cats, Martha - Bartok, Vivaldi, Beethoven, & Mozart...I remember you saying you've had cats that lived to be 21 or 22 years old. I'm dealing with an aging cat (dear, sweet Edgar =^..^=) who is 17+, and the heartbreak is juuust starting to begin, seeing his eminent decline before my eyes. Such are the cycles in life, but... (it's hard!...)
As most of us conjure, cats are aloof and show no affection...ahhh, don't let them fool you! They're v-e-r-y sociable little animals (some are dog-like, and follow you around) and provide wonderful company.
=^..^=

I was at your show this past Monday, the 19th and had a wonderful time! I keep bragging to all my friends what a great show you have! Just wondering if you tried out the Japanese sushi restaurant yet, Kodama?

Sweet, sweet photos!
Pets are so loving. My 50 yr. old brother, Ronnie, lives alone ...but not completely alone. He has two very large and very old cats, Cote and Zack (weighing 21 lbs.) and they are his world. He hardly does anything without them in mind. Including purchasing new living room furniture. I went shopping with him for his new living room and we visited a dozen furniture stores. In each store he would sit in the sofa and chairs saying, "Zack wouldn't like this" or "Too hard for Cote".
When I talk with him on the phone, I can sometimes hear him talking to them in the background like they are his children. I am so glad that he has Cote and Zack. It is comforting to know that Ronnie isn't lonely.
Ronnie lives in a small antique cape in New Hampshire and his decorating skills are a mix of Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren.

Hi Martha, Thanks for another wonderful blog. It was so much fun to see Frost on your show the other day and now to see both new cats and the place where they came from, is like frosting on the cake. The photos from ARF bring happy and sad feelings. I am so happy and proud that you adopted Frost and Snow, but sad to see all of those still waiting, especially the dogs in the cages. It's hard to understand how anyone can give up an animal {I could never do it}, but rewarding to see that there are shelters like ARF. Bless you, Martha and bless all of your beautiful menagerie. Jan

Hi Martha! Congrats on the adoption of two beautiful Himalayan cats. I love Himalayan cats as well. Right now I have a 10 month old Himalayan Ragdoll and I am adopting another Himalayan ragdoll kitten who is due to come home on Valentine's Day! I'm so excited! I hope that you do a segment on ALL of the pets you have some day and how you care for them. (cats, chickens, chinchillas, dogs etc..etc..)They live such a good life. I would love to have chinchillas someday but I would love to know how to care for them properly from someone who loves animals so much! Will you have your chinchillas on your show someday? Will you show us where you keep them? Are they caged? Thanks again for sharing your life and inspiring us all! I look forward to reading your blog everyday!

I want to thank you for adopting these beautiful cats! They are lucky to have found a wonderful "forever home." I am in CA and the recent foreclosures have left many shelters overcrowded and the budget crisis has led to our Governor proposing a tax on vet services, yikes!! I am glad that you adopted your new cats and have shown your viewers that you ADOPT purebred pets instead of going to a breeder. Thank you again Martha for adopting. Remember, don't breed or buy while those in shelters die!

i am happy you rescued these beautiful cats. martha, there are so many animals whose owners havent been able to keep them. you seem to only desire the purebred animals. with your resources you can provide such great homes to animals who are not fancy, expensive breeds. there are many horses, especially lovely older horses, whose owners can no longer feed them. can you find it in your heart to open you barn to a non-fresian horse who is in dire cirucmstances? embrace the mix breed martha

A few weeks ago, I told my brother: "my goodness, she looks so much like her!" "Well, who does she look like?" my brother asked (he was watching something on Vitaya - a Belgian tv channel - often reporting the wonderful weather in Belgium).
I said: "Brigitte Bardot!"
Brigitte Bardot - is she not the most attractive being?
Or as they say: and then God created... Brigitte Bardot.
Quite a compliment, Martha.
To those who think it is just honey or vinegar -study auras and judge for yourself.
Also very interesting the previous blog (very gentle with the horse's mouth, horse looks relaxed and happy. As they say, feet tell the truth, and horse ears don't lie.
Maybe a video next time?

Hi Martha,
I know you are a great fan of pets. I have invented a cool new dog waste bag. I would like you to check it out at http://www.parachutedog.com.
It pops open/seals shut, converts into a scoop if desired, is biodegradable, and the dog carries the used bag via a leash clip.
My press release is on page 1 of prweb.com today. (Jan 22).
I would be happy to forward one if you are interested.
Sincerely,

Hi, I just wanted to tell you how very excited I was to hear that you adopted Frosty and Snowflake !!!! I am the Cat Manager at Pets Alive, a No-Kill animal rescue in Middletown, New York. It was here that Frosty and "Miss Flakey", as I called her, were first surrendered. They lived here for a few months before moving to ARF. I am so happy we took the chance and sent them there. What a wonderful outcome for such a sad story. Please give them both very big kisses from me, I do miss them so. They both have such great personalities. I will be looking for more pictures
. Again, thank you so much for giving our Kitties such a loving home.

You seem like a wonderfully, kind=hearted pperson when it comes to animal care, which I think is super duper.
speaking of bad economic times- without going into it-currently I am going through a BIT myself.
I live in Cambridge, MA=pershpas one day we'll meet or chat- by phone 617-953-1406 I don't know how many people reveal thier numbers in this forum? Just thought I'd give it a shot.
I am an extremly trustworthy and honest person. I better be. I was born in Manhattan (Washington Heights) which my family left for Teaneck NJ when I was six. So I am a NJ girl like you!
Love to hear from you.

Big fan, Martha. I record your show everyday and watch it when I work out on my eliptical. I am addicted.
Snowflake was a hit! Being a cat owner myself I found the "cage"scene too funny.
I too wanted to thank you for adopting adult cats. I have 2 right now myself from shelters and they are wonderful part of the family. Amazingly there isn't enough encoragement for people to adopt instead of buying pets. I would love to see more segments about pet adoption this year on your show.If I could afford more-I would rescue more in a heartbeat.

Hi Martha,
How did the ARF application process go?
We live on a small farm on the North Fork, but its near the North Road, so they "rejected," us as unfit! So my sister went later in the day for us, and got through the vetting. She lives on the Boulevard in Laurel, on the water, so her home was acceptable. Now keep in mind, this is for a house cat, that never goes outside, except for vet outings.
That said, ARF does great work and the facility is the best I have seen for a rescue operation.
The funny part is we thought we were getting a fluffy black and white kitten, which turned into a huge Maine Coon Cat; kept growing and growing for three years, but we love our Molly!
Took horses' blankets off for a few hours this morning, but it looks like they will need them again later tonight. They start getting cold when the temp nears 20. They will be happier than us, when this weather breaks!

Hi Martha Steward,
I was inspired by your story to search for a rescue cat (Birman, ideally).
I found a rescue in WI that has a Sealpoint Siamese named Chelsea with a rather horrid past, and who now looks particularly attractive to the right family. I thought I'd post the link here in a small effort to assist in finding Chelsea a new home:
http://www.purebredcatrescue.org/purebredcat/available+for+adoption/default.asp
Here's a excerpt from her bio found on the rescue's site:
"Chelsea has probably the saddest story of any cat we have seen in a long time. Chelsea's owner decided she didn't like having a cat any more so she put Chelsea in a cage, put her in a dark basement and left her to starve to death. Fortunately the owner's son heard about this and rescued Chelsea right as she was on the edge of death. Chelsea spent the next 3 weeks in intensive care at the Animal Hospital of Gurnee in Wadsworth, Il. The staff generously treated her at the clinic's expense because she had suffered so much and also because she is such a SWEET cat."

Martha I just want to say I commend you on adopting cats from a shelter & also recommending shelters. I myself adopted my baby Kimora from my local shelter, and she was a stray that someone just left out to fend for herself, but she seemed to adjust well and is very loving & has basically taken over the house. lol.. I also want to say to others,PLEASE CONSIDER OLDER CATS AS WELL AS KITTENS, THEY ARE USUALLY ALREADY BOX TRAINED AND CAN BE JUST AS PLAYFUL AS A KITTEN & PLLLEASE HAVE YOUR PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED, THAT IS ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF SHELTERS, THEY TAKE CARE OF THAT FOR YOU !!

Hi Martha!! I live in Mexico and people do not care for their animals so they simply throw them away. Very sad, I know.
I had found two little cats and fell in love, now they are part of my family. I think adopted animals are very grateful with you for the rest of their lives.

My husband and I have loved and been loved by Shih Tzus for years. After our Rosie died, and with the cost of these wonderful dogs so high, we never dreamed of having another one again, until Elvis entered our hearts. Last year I was recovering from a very difficut knee replacement surgery, my hushand came home and told me about a dog he saw at the pound and wanted to take me there to see him. We went and me using a walker looked at the saddest looking dog, he was dirty and stinky and very unhappy being with other dogs. I held him, and it was pure love. My husband had to go back the next day at 8am to bid on him because two other people were interested in him, but nobody else showed up and my husband paid for him and brought him home. I cried when I saw him. We washed him and brushed him, and under all that dirt and matted fur, was a Shih Tzu. We are so happy to have found him and we saved his life and he enriched our lives.

I'm so happy to see the two himalayan cats you adopted. I inherited a himalayan cat and find I have difficulty keeping her groomed. After several trips to the vet, (sorry for the visual description)for brown chunks in her ears and a lot of brown caking around the eyes, including her nose, and chin, I was told she probably has allergies and to try different cat litter and/or cat food. The treatment they gave her in the past was antibiotics and a steroid shot. Since I am not happy to continue with steroid shots I try to treat her myself. After having a first time incident for me with my other cat, a 12 year old Tuxedo, getting out and missing for four days (I live in a rural type setting with lots of woods, fox, racoons, etc.) I had to give the two cats frontline flea treatments, all this to say, the flea treatment seemed to help the himalayans eyes and ears! So I am now using a ear mite treatment, and cleaning her ears with that. I also have a MAJOR problem with finding a groomer for her. She has drawn blood and now no one wants to groom her. I know I'll be tisked but I have had to have her shaved several times. She is very upset when I try to groom her! She did not grow up with being brushed and groomed regularly. I am working on that when I can. My tuxedo loves to be brushed, but the himalayan is the one who needs it. Perhaps one day you could do a show on grooming these special cats, with some tips about any known problem areas, and remedies. This information is difficult to find. Thanks

Hi Martha,
What a cuttie pie. I had a Himalayan that was given to me by someone who could no longer care for him.
Although he was not well from the get-go, he lived 6 wonderful and joyous years and brought me much happiness.
I hope one day to adopt another Himalayan (I have to work on my husband as we already have an active 7 year old boy and a beautiful Siberian Husky that we adopted from the SPCA).
Enjoy your new ball of fluff.
Maybe you can show them more often on your show so I can live vicariously through you until I get another Himalayan.
Be well,
Jodi L.

So great! It's important for people to know, EVERY single pure bred cat and dog can be found at a shelter. Thank you for saving 2 lives Martha!

My soldier son had a friend adopt Beauregard-"Bo" and bring him to me when he was stationed in Iraq so I would have something to worry with instead of worry about-- him--my youngest son--Bo is half Jack Russel and Schnauzer. In other words he bounces around a whole lot. He wears a "real" dog tag as a name tag. So Bo's life was saved, my mind was saved and yes my son is back in Louisiana safe-for now!

I adopted my male, applehead sealpoint siamese from a breed rescue http://www.siameserescue.org/ Great organization. He is gorgeous and just the type I was looking for. Very true to his breed. I'm a big big fan of breed rescue orgs. They know the breed so well and can be such a font of quality info on the animal. Congrats on your kitties! I hope they have settled in nicely! I love himalayans! Sooo sweet and loving!

What lovely kitties! Our Rescued Himalayan, passed away two years ago. He died in my arms and I miss him so. His name was "Muppy" (aka Zaphod Beeblebrox - the vet techs never got it right, so we switched to Muppy. We found him abandoned (declawed and neutered) near death next to our compost bin. He was our friend and comic relief for ten years.
Love you Martha!

I would like to say thank you for adopting instead of purchasing your newest 2 family members. Those of us who work in rescue organizations see way to many beautiful animals be euthanized because of the shear number in the shelters. Too many lives are lost too young because of over population and irresponsible pet owners. Thank you for being an animal advocate.
