A Foggy Morning In Bedford
It's no secret that I am an early riser. I just love the way things look in the morning light and for photography, there's nothing like the magic glow of dawn. On a recent morning, I was delighted to find my farm covered in a shroud of misty fog. I quickly grabbed my Canon 1D and ventured out to capture its wispy wonder. Please enjoy these photos.
1 My ancient apple trees looked so structural in the morning fog.
2 The sun began creeping over the tree line.
3 The day became brighter.
4 The old corn crib is a charming building.
5 The stables shrouded in fog
6 Another look at the old trees
7 And another
8 The light was especially pretty on the house.
9 Looking down the row of espaliered apple trees
10 One of my kitties hiding behind an urn
11 Look - it's Verdi.
12 The taller plant is Blue Rush and the shorter is one that I call Fiber Optic Plant.
13 My Stargazer Lilies were extraordinary this year.
14 Another view
15 The pergola disappears into the mist.

Fabulous pictures Martha - we're lucky you are an early riser!
I love the new feature with the Blog graphics - very smooth transition from one picture to the next.
Always introducing new technology - love that about you!

Martha, I love this blog I want to share a wildlife story with you. But first you need to check out this blog.
http://newyorkplantsandotherstuff.blogspot.com/ You should have her on your show.
Here goes. "Poor thing was trapped in the garage. I asked the lawn people if they could use the blower to gently encourage him out of the garage. This is the second time he came and it was impossible the first time to get him out. They were too aggressive and brought me his tiny little dying body. His eyes were going and his heart was going. I googled, I was instructed to get an eye dropper and encourage him to drink. I did this for about 20 minutes, until I thought maybe I should talk to him, or her. That did it, he or she took it as a nag, and off it flew to a nearby tree. I don't know if this is the same bird that my son had revived earlier this month, he took all the cobwebs off his feet and his or her beak then. I thought we should put him in a little water and then he flew off. I have a knack. A turkey once came to the garage door and was there all day, we couldn't get him to leave, and again as soon as I opened my mouth to talk to him/ or her, it flew off.
Thought I would share."
Regards,
Sally

Dear Matha,
I am one of your fan in Thailand. I could not miss watching your program on T.V. (almost)everyday.
You are my idol lady who is so energetic and dynamic.
Your place (farm) is so beautiful, looks like a paradise. I could have just only a dream to be there.
With my best regards,

Dear Martha,
I look forward to your daily blog, especially the photos. No doubt, you have excellent equipment, but you have the eye of a true artist. It is the person behind the camera who deserves the credit. The lighting and composition of your work is of a true professional level. (I used to be a photographer). I love the fact that you always seize the moment, Martha. Thank you for sharing those "good things" that continue to inspire you.

Hi Martha, Lovely photos, as always. And, really prefer the way the photos were displayed in this entry vs. previous way. Easy to quickly enjoy the photos and not have to leave the blog entry. Faster, as well.
Thanks!

Looks pretty cool, nice light. Fog or mist seems to be a real problem for me when I am shooting pictures--never enough light to capture the details as you did. Of course my cats are always available for a camera poise, or is it their natural state.....

Hi Martha,
I echo Donna Olson, “We’re lucky you are an early riser!” I don’t recall the last time I saw fog except from in your pictures. I do get up early occasionally but anything I might have seen wasn’t any reason to grab my camera. My pictures wouldn’t be anything like your pictures. Btw, I also like the way you have displayed them. They come up much quicker.
Verdi looks so beautiful and so does the planter with the Blue Rush and Fiber Optic plants. So gorgeous! I had to go back in the archives to see when Shaun pruned those espalier apple trees and it was April 17th of this year. What a difference in photos – the trees and the grounds look so fantastic now.
Well, it had to happen, (I should say again), with “Martha” on my brain almost every day. I dreamt your first show was on a cruise ship but it was docked, not out to sea. I had tickets but arrived late because I couldn’t get my DVR to start recording. I always tape the show. Everyone was going to lunch when I got there but I found you and Hannah Milman sitting at a table in some kind of lobby. You had a black suit on with a pink blouse and Hannah was dressed in jeans. Then you started to show me things for the next segment but I don’t remember what they were. Poof, I woke up! Trish

Martha? Martha? MARTHA!!!!
Where are you? Can't see a thing! You're out there somewhere I know, with that camera of yours! I'm lost in the fog...isn't it beautiful? Ha!
PS. Think it would be nice if you installed a fog horn at the farm! More coming I fear (fog, that is) so drive carefully! Please! Rock? Rock? ROCK!!!!

Martha - great pictures. I'm an early riser as well. I think the early morning is the best part of the day. I'm usually up around 5 and it's so peaceful and quite. I enjoy sitting on my deck with a cup of coffee waiting for the birds to start chirping.

This foggy morning was absolutely breathtaking! I just made the comment to someone yesterday that I wished I was a 'morning person' and proceeded to explain that morning was such a special time of the day, with the earth awakening to a new day. You captured your new day exquisitely, Martha, there around your farm!
Today, we see Mother Nature and her goodness. In yesterday's blog, her ferocity was the topic of discussion. She is NOT a force to be reckoned with, and I guess it's not a good idea to try to 'fool' her either!

I'm up by 6am every day and out the door soon thereafter. When I was growing up in Kent, CT ... used to be I'd be up early to do chores and visit the horses, but now that I'm living in the heart of London - I head to Hampstead Heath or one of the local parks for a run. Good for the all important mind-body-soul trilogy. Leads to some poetic inspiration as well:
Yankee Dawn:
With foot a fleet
the dawn we greet.
Clear dew on vine
mist, thin blue line.
Soft summer days of bliss
life's lips we kiss.
____ & for the CT homesick days_____
Vicar’s Path to Home:
I run down the old Vicar’s path
an old route between the chapel
at the crest of the hill
toward the west
and that tidy little cottage
mossy brick
the whole picture
unsurprisingly vintage.
Bluebells are out now
and the young fox
classic white flowers with their
yellow pollen signal
the coming strawberries
long, sweet nights
no rain for days
summer solace and it’s
abiding solstice
one week away.
The vines on my route are
crawling up the fence
a discarded trash bag
the blue kind for vegetables
flips around
trying to escape
the green thorn clutches.
Mud dried up
only gravel and sand
collecting on my shoes
everything is slightly muffled
momentum, sight, sound, and thought.
I’m moving
following the guidelines
set by some vicar so long ago
forward and ahead
breathing in consciousness
and pretending
I’m home.

I always love your pics, but honestly didn't view them very much because the page took so long to reload. Well, no more of that! I am so thrilled about this... I really enjoyed seeing how the farm looks on an early foggy morning - breathtaking.

Morning Mist
Resolute ancient apple trees within a fence,within a fence;
Chiseled out against the morning sky that hurries hence.
Trees that stood the test of time many times bee kissed;
Chuckling for sure in the dawning air under a bonnet of mist.
On the tree sky line wispy clouds and a trickle of warm sun
The summer's day became brighter, but the fog stayed on.
An old corn crib with roof intact holds a certain rustic charm
With fog as a back drop silent witness to secrets of the farm.
Stables are a quiet monument to one of mans' best friends
Shrouded in fog on this day, waiting for a human to attend.
Morning light was especially pretty on the house dontcha think?
In the writer's opinion the Lady of the house is pretty in pink.
Looking down the row of espaliered apple trees this morning
Their arms outstretched to give thanks for another dawning.
Enchanting scene of tranquility and the secret of the urn
Surprise, its Vivaldi who had his eye on breakfast, gosh dern.
The plants Blue Rush and Fiber Optic duke it out, fancy that.
Stargazer Lilies extraordinary this year have a cheery chat.
The pergola with its colonnades disappear into the mist,
Night creatures scurry to hide and hope they will be missed.

Hi Martha, What a beautiful gallery of photos of a glorious foggy early morning at Bedford. I love all of the photos and the new method we can use to browse them. That's really cool. The only thing I miss is the ability to enlarge each photo, but these photos are larger than the others were anyway. The early mornings here near Puget Sound are lovely, also. Some mornings are clear as a bell and others are quite foggy like yours get. Have a great weekend and stay safe. Jan

Wonderful sunrise photos. I could "feel" the wet fog in the lovely, soft photos. I'm an early riser, too, silently exclaiming Thanks For This Day ---Martha, you might find endearing William Stafford's poem "Freedom" with its lines "you can usually be free some of the time/if you wake up before other people."

Ah, numbers 2, 3, and 15 are my favorites! They remind me of childhood early mornings when I would sneak out and look at the world all by myself! Such a deep-breath time. Quiet, like one is the only one awake and aware! Lovely! Being chronically ill, I am often awake at those times and can, some of the time, enjoy them as I did in yester-years!

I am so glad to find you here and also on twitter, I couldn't love it any more. U see, I used to watch your 10:30(MT)show and often late for my first class back in college, I just loved watching your show every morning and couldn't take my eyes away from what neat things you could do and create on the show. It was just awesome! But then now that I am back in Seoul after all schoolings, I don't even have that any more except for few short glimpse on the internet.
Wish your show is aired here regularly.. and maybe someday..

I looked on your website for a recipe to cook fresh salmon and just had to stop and browse through the wonderful photo's you posted this morning! (August 30th) I have to tell you though your Oriental hybrid lily, does not look like 'Stargazer'. The stalk is generally only 3-4' for 'Stargazer' and has upward facing flowers. Your lily looks like 'Scheherazade', an 'Orienpet' hybrid that can reach up to 8' and has flowers that face downwards and curved. If it is, that particular hybrid comes from The Lily Garden here in Vancouver, WA. where they hybridize many lilies. ( I have ordered from that particular company for years)
Also, how about a Martha Stewart calendar again? I have one with recipes from many years ago, which would be great to have one again, but if not recipes, how about some of your beautiful photo's from your property on one?
I love all the information you are constantly helping all of us who love to cook, garden and the like.

What a beautiful image to wake up to. In Wyoming we have deer standing in the mist. Only heads and legs are to be seen. Fog can be so creepy at times and then there is the beauty.
