Have You Seen "Martha Bakes?"
In case you haven’t heard, I have a new show on Hallmark Channel called “Martha Bakes.” This 13-episode half-hour weekly teaching series is a definitive resource for home-baking novices and experts alike. There are so many cooking shows out there that really don’t teach very much. I thought the public should have a series of very fine, instructional cooking shows where you actually learn to cook and it was decided that we would begin with the topic of baking. The series was taped last July in my very own kitchen in Bedford. It was an intense three weeks, made even more intense, as a heat wave with soaring temperatures settled over the region. Not the best conditions for baking! However, I am very happy and proud of the show and I hope you will tune in and let me know what you think. To find Hallmark Channel in your area, click here. You can also watch past episodes in our Show Archives.
1 From looking at this photo, you would never know that it was nearly 100-degrees F outside. It was definitely hot enough to melt!
2 Working in my kitchen at home, was a tight squeeze for the camera crew.
3 As always, Gary Nardilla's crew was highly adaptable and made things run smoothly.
4 Thomas Joseph - TV kitchen chef and Charlie Green - makeup artist between takes
5 Charlie does a fine job making me look good.
6 Thomas walked me through every step of the recipes.
7 Being one-on-one with the camera made me nostalgic for my old television format.
8 I've received several comments and apparently, many viewers feel the same way.
9 For the best desserts, use only the best ingredients. We used Callebaut chocolate from Belgium.
10 And fruit should be at its peak of ripeness, like these greengage plums.
11 We scoured through many of my favorite cookbooks for inspiration when creating these desserts.
12 Anduin Havens was checking the iPad to see what was needed on set for the next segment.
13 Laura Acuna, my longtime housekeeper, was at the ready to chip in when help was needed.
14 Getting very tight with the camera
15 It was very convenient having the recipes right next to me on the iPad screen.
16 Another example of how crowded the kitchen was
17 Catching up on property news between takes
18 The baking show looks so crisp and colorful.
19 Sharkey was puzzled as to why her living space was so crowded with equipment and crew.
20 Well, if you can't beat them, join them!
21 Action, Francesca!
22 Believe me, these lights really heat up a room!
23 Another segment was devoted to the pastry known as pâte à choux.
24 Versatile pâte à choux is used to make profiteroles, croquembouches, eclairs, French crullers, beignets, St. Honoré cake, and gougères.
25 The dough contains only butter, water, flour, and eggs and it puffs and hollows when baked or fried.

Martha, I, too, miss the old format. I really liked the shows made at Turkey Hill. I'd like to see you go back to that, but...I don't guess it matters too much, since I, and many others, can no longer see you and my only link is this Blog.
That chocolate cake looks really good, and would go well with a glass of cold milk.

I really dig "Martha Bakes." And, I, too, love the nostalgic format. I just wish that this new show was on each day, also! Bake away...

Martha,
"Martha Bakes" has definitely been one of the highlights of 2011 so far. It truly is a great way to teach the audience techniques in baking, as I've been DVR'ing the show weekly. Can you please fill us in on some of the bakeware you use, I notice some of it is your brand but other stuff isn't- i.e. the springform pan you use, the muffin tin, etc... would really appreciate that. Thanks, and looking forward to more baking!

This show reminds me of the last iteration of The Martha Stewart Show - I love it (and I love your current/audience show too!). It's beautiful to watch - the lighting and everything is so perfect. Every moment is an inspiration and the classic recipes are fantastic.
I had no idea it took 3 weeks to film 13 half hours! Thanks Martha - the show is fantastic!

It looks like a great show and I will have a look at the show archives - I love all things baking.
And you made a good choice with the Michel Roux Pastry book it is one of my favourite books. Easy but precise. Perfect.

I love Martha Bakes!
It does remind me of your previous format, which I loved so much and watched throughout my 20s and 30s -- you taught me how to cook, bake, sew, craft, decorate. In some of those disciplines, you helped me become very accomplished. Please offer more of this!

I am really enjoying "Martha Bakes", and yes it does happily remind me of the old "Living" format. Just Martha one on one with the camera.
Posted by: Jason | February 16th, 2011 at 6:46 am
Martha, I really like this format as well. And yes, it reminds me of your older shows tapped in CT. Can you tape the Martha Show from your house more often?
Posted by: David | February 16th, 2011 at 8:00 am
For many reasons I cannot watch your shows, but I am sure I would love them. I will let my husband know that you use Belgium chocolate because it is the best, it will please him, yes because he is Belgium! And I agree with you, Belgium chocolate is unique.

I'm enjoying your new program "Martha Bakes". I do miss the old format also. You're such a wonderful teacher showing easy to follow instructions that guarantee a great result. Thank you.

Martha, you should be nostalgic for your early shows that had the one-on-one format; that was reality television at its best, both for you and the audience. I've always felt those were some of the best shows I remember.

I am so enjoying "Martha Bakes"...DVR is set to record each episode...and i will REFUSE to erase them for as long as i can
. I love that it is taped in your home--it feels personal again. Thank you Martha,,,for sharing more of your excellence!

Martha,
I love your new show! I loved the cheesecake with the bing cherries on the last episode. Perhaps, I will try them for my next Martha Stewart Sunday on my blog. Thanks for all the inspiration!

how many years have i been BEGGING for you to go back to the old format and film from home. really, i should be a producer or something on your show. LOVE m bakes. you should do a half hour segment also on homekeeping or repairs, like your old show, but this time from maine or lily pond. now that would be cool as you rarely shoot from there (and that's what viewers want to see, how martha's homes look, their upkeep. i treasure those segments). a viewer since cbs's half hour format early on the weekend - c

Martha, yes, I've watched Martha Bakes and I love it. It's just you and I love that format. Keep baking and I'll keep watching. Thanks for sharing this blog post.

Good to know I'm not the only one who misses the "old" Martha show; so calm, entertaining and educational.
As for your baking...I am reminded of when I made pate a choux for eclairs for my French class in college, ambitious, yes, especially since I hadn't bake a single thing in my life until then!
Posted by: Rhonda Hayes | February 16th, 2011 at 9:59 am
This program is like a wonderful gift. In my humble opinion it far and away exceeds the hourly program. It is just Martha teaching in an intimate setting without an audience.

Hi Martha,
The thing I like especially about Martha Bakes is the caption under picture #24: ‘Versatile pâte à choux is used to make profiteroles, croquembouches, eclairs, French crullers, beignets, St. Honoré cake, and gougères.’ I didn’t even know those words before I started watching your Martha Stewart Living Show years ago, a show I lived to watch so I could learn! The old format will always be my favorite but I also like the current format where you are more personal about your travels and your daily life. I like hearing about the things you do which is something you didn’t discuss as often on your old show. You are such a trouper to work under intense conditions such as you did for Martha Bakes, but as long as you want to produce a series of teaching episodes, I will gladly watch. But I also want to watch the daily show. Thanks Martha, you’re the best! Trish

Hi Martha, Yes, yes, yes, I watch "Martha Bakes" religiously as well as all of your other TV Shows! I find that your teaching affects are far superior to anyone elses and I just love watching everything that you do! This blog post is really terrific! It's so much fun to see the behind the scenes activities of all of your shows and they are put together so well that it's hard to believe there is anyone else there besides the camera guy, Gary. How long does it take to put together one "Martha Bakes" TV Show?! I'm anxious to see the pound cakes show next Monday and the nine others. It would be fun to see your baking show from the kitchen at Skylands and Lily Pond, also! Sure was fun to see 'The Sisters Show' yesterday. Having three brothers and no sisters makes it fun for me to see how sisters react to each other. Have another great day! Jan

Martha I LOVE the new Baking show! I do have to say I do watch you each day but as with so many also miss the old format and hope you at least do other shows in the future that remind us of that for Hallmark, maybe a cooking show?
Keep up the great work, you can do no wrong!

Can't imagine how uncomfortable it must have been to tape those segments. It's a high quality, well crafted and educational show. Last year was the first time I had ever seen your "old" show, and I would rather see your "new/live" show on a daily basis.
Posted by: Julia | February 16th, 2011 at 11:24 am
I loved show and your boxing today. BAKING is good. I have you taped on my old VHS player along with vast collections of much. Just a word about Roses here after seeing Michal Marriot and David Austin varieties. My beloved aunt Maxine and I dug up heirlooms at the old Viking Hotel here and they are hardy here in Dakota. Can you imagine how hard it is to water our cattle with frost line depth here?

I hope, hope, hope this series will be available on DVD (and you send me the first copy !) and on demand on tv. It's brilliant. I miss you doing this format. I still pop in the old VCR tapes when you did that gorgeous ham and displayed things in a wheel barrow. You've come a long way baby but I think this is your true calling !
Posted by: Isabel | February 16th, 2011 at 11:51 am
Martha, I think the new baking show is the best and it is beautifully produced. Glad to see that is so well received by your fans. We can only hope that more series ideas will spring from this. The format may be more work, but the quality of the finish product is superior to what can be done in a talk show format. Your production team should be very proud and you should be sure to have “Martha Bakes” submitted for review for instructional programming for the Daytime Emmys. This is a show that you should be very proud of!
Posted by: Brian | February 16th, 2011 at 12:05 pm
Wow, look at that kitchen! Your cheeks do look quite rosy Martha. I watched your show for years when I lived in the U.S., but now that I live in a small mountain village in Mexico I do not have access. I'll have to be satisfied checking out your blog. I'm curious if you made any chocolate recipes?
Posted by: ChocolateCentral | February 16th, 2011 at 12:19 pm
I absolutely love MARTHA BAKES, and as we all learn maybe you will have to learn to do the series in the winter with the snow piled high at your windows.
I too have a question about your cooking pans and utensils. I often read a glass pie dish is best but when you chill the ingredients and pie before baking I do wonder how the glass reacts in a 400 degree oven.
You always make me smile.

I wish I could see this Baking series, but I don't subscribe to cable. Having you teach us directly one on one, is something that I thoroughly enjoy. You're right, all of the cooking contest shows that are out there teach us nothing. Having clear, methodical instructions & your inimitable way of conveying them is why I got interested in baking, cooking, collecting, gardening, etc... We need to see more of this!
Posted by: David | February 16th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
I'm happy to see that so many people feel the same way about your old format. I so loved the segments you did in your backyard. It was like a private lesson. Would love if you could incorporate some more of the old format once again.
Posted by: Kitty McKnight | February 16th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Fantastic! I too really have missed the old format and this is exactly spot on. Martha inviting you into her home to show you one on one how to do something was the thing that gave the old half hour weekly show that special something. Can't wait to see the other cooking shows and hope for some home and garden shows too in the future!
Posted by: Tim | February 16th, 2011 at 1:28 pm
I so wish I could see this show. Are any of the episodes available online? We recently switched to AT&T Uverse and I was very dismayed to find that they do not carry the Hallmark Channel. So I can no longer watch Martha or Mad Hungry. I'm not very happy about it, but there is nothing I can do, except hope AT&T and Hallmark work something out, or that MSLO puts the videos online to stream. And baking is my favorite aspect of cooking, so I really wish I could see these

Thank you for returning to your original concept of "teaching"! I must say I really enjoyed your old programs where you went into depth on subjects, and the same with your old magazine issues. You taught me so much about things I had never even thought about.
Please, please go back to the old concept on your shows and magazines!
Posted by: karen | February 16th, 2011 at 1:36 pm
I am happy to hear these episodes are available online! I signed up this past summer for ATT Uverse specifically so that I would have the Hallmark channel, only to have ATT remove it from their lineup 3 weeks later!!
While I like the new format, I LOVE the old format. I find it more educational. So I know I will love this format as well!
Posted by: Niki | February 16th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
I could not be more please to see Martha Stewart return to her old format of one-on-one. No one does it better. Hope there will be another series in the future.

This was so nice to see! I love the kitchen, and I just love the blue blouse you were wearing. It just is so fresh, clean and makes the picture just pop.

I enjoy Martha Bakes very much. As you mentioned, most cooking shows don't teach much. I have to agree, I long for the old format too...one on one! Love to see Sharky and Francesca get into the shots too.

Martha, I LOVE this show, yes, it does remind me of the older show, which I loved dearly. This is just such a wonderful, simply idea and so needed in the world of TV food shows today. Plain and simple baking 101! I love the ipad, I am hoping you will make these shows available for it.That would be such a plus to have it all right there like your cookie app.

I love martha bakes. I too wish that the martha stewart show would use your old format; your talent for instruction shines.

Martha, I agree with all of the above posts! I told my husband that I didn't understand how Oprah could have her own network, she doesn't DO anything! Whereas you, however, are a wonderful teacher. I homeschool my twin girls (age 9) and we frequently watch your shows for the educational value!
Posted by: Kim Sparling | February 16th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
I also long for the old format!! I watch your daily show when I get the chance but much prefer the old formats of the cooking shows, the decor, the gardening! They were so beautifully shot and also entertaining , inspiring and informative! I miss them! Will definitely check out this new baking show!

Being Canadian I watch all your shows on your website, so thank you for putting them on there for us who can't get the Hallmark Channel. I recently upgraded my satellite to get the Food network and I agree with you, too many of the shows are reality based. The closest I came to your quality of show has been Ina Garten. So many of the people I talk to all share the same opinion, that we miss the old instructional format with you one on one. I am so happy you have added Martha Bakes to the selection.

Martha, your new baking show is wonderful and so informative. Even though I am a veteran homemaker, I never tire of learning new ways to bake. Thank you for many years of teaching me the domestic arts and elevating them to a high level of importance. I have learned so much from you since being a young bride in the 1980's and now an empty-nester!

I am so glad to see the "familiar" programing.
It is so refreshing and informative. Reminds me of the original programing. Keep this going.
It is so informative for those young bakers and us old ones too.
Thanks

We just love ya Martha! I think you're rather "impish" so serious on the outside, but full of mischief on the inside. Bake on baby!

Really enjoying the new show. Sorry to hear it's only 13 episodes. Would love to have the old format show back. Even if only once a week like the early years. Very educational. It's nice not having to see celebrities fumble through segments. Just simple instructional and entertaining.
Posted by: Richard | February 16th, 2011 at 6:19 pm
One of the reason I think we all loved the old format of the show is because we saw all the steps needed to do a craft, or cook soup, or grow some vegetables. Now the show is rushed. I like both of the formats but loved the old format better. Nice to know so many others did too.

I agree with others that the Baking Show is really good. I like that it is 30 minutes, and I appreciate the focus and the reliability of your recipes and techniques. However, I must also put in a good word for your NEW format. I find that you have relaxed so much more with a live audience - you are much more accessible and fun! And you're still teaching all the time, really. So don't go back to the old format for anything but specifically focused series - like baking. I tape you every day and watch in the evenings when I have the time. Always rewarding; great guests. I'd love to have tips on how your housekeepers manages keeping your house clean and ready for all of your projects and guests. Most of us are totally overwhelmed and a schedule or way of thinking about it would really help. How much support staff does she have inside the home? I don't remember if you've done a show on joint health. But that would also be a good segment, especially how to keep your range of motion, and what are the precautions you still adhere to, after hip replacement surgery. Thank you, Martha.

I very much enjoy "Martha Bakes" and like the format, like the older shows. The new show is more of a talk show and I really enjoyed the older shows better with mostly just Martha. Hopefully there will be more like "Martha Bakes"! I'm very grateful I have the Hallmark chanel.
Posted by: Dee | February 16th, 2011 at 8:56 pm
And I'm another one who REALLY misses the original show; I think what I liked about it was that it was created by adults for a thoughtful adult audience, a format which pretty much doesn't exist anymore. I have many fond memories, particularly of field-trip segments; the grounds at Skylands, ice-climbing in Alaska, harvesting blueberries in Maine, touring Palm Springs, hiking up the mountain in Acadia National Park. However the thing that I remember most is when the show resumed airing again after pretty much all programming had stopped in the days following 9/11; it was VERY comforting to have it back during that difficult time.

Martha, LOVE mb...baking(--and gardening--) has become fashionable again! Now, we need you to bring back sewing (and crafting), that I'm afraid will be a thing of the past. There are sooo many home projects that can save a ton of money in this economy....also gifting can be economical when it is crafted. Thanks again!

Martha, I love this show. If I am not at home I set it up to tape so that I can enjoy it later. I have so much confidence after watching you, that I always try at least one of the items you prepared. I loved the Cheesecake show. The ricotta cheesecake was something entirely new and different. I can't wait to try and duplicate it for my family.
Posted by: Diane in Texas | February 17th, 2011 at 6:55 am
I'm casting my "vote" for the old format, too. The thing I like best about your work is the instructional element and that was the over-riding feature of the old show, so I'm looking forward to the 13 segments of Martha Bakes. I come to MSLO for information and instruction; there are only so many hours in the day and, although it is sometimes entertaining, I don't really care to invest my time "chit-chatting with the stars." I can get that anywhere. I like to "learn something new everyday" and, in my view, the old format was more instructive. Thanks for all you do...in whatever format.

Yes to "Martha Bakes"!! I am not a baker but love watching you, so at home in the kitchen, in spite of all those cameras and heat. The closeups of batter...everything was beautifully filmed and gorgeous in HD!

THANK YOU!!! I have been trying to figure out, and have tried so many different things, to prevent my cheesecake from cracking. I watched Martha Bakes...I am not sure which step makes the difference but I have baked 3 different kinds of cheesecake this week (Key Lime, Baklava, and Turtle) and all of them were perfect! You are my insiration!

Martha Bakes is exactly the type of program I have been waiting to see! The entire show stays on topic, and by having one main recipe per show, the viewer stays focused. I am savoring every episode!

I've been watching and appreciating your shows since the first airings! Recently, I viewed some old videotapes of your original format-what a wonderful look back. I'm glad your baking show has that feel! Thank you for all that you have taught and given us, Martha! Are you going to bring back your "Field Trip" segments someday?
Posted by: John DiSanto | February 19th, 2011 at 1:03 pm
I was really excited about your new baking show because your old shows were really inspirational. The baking show is a little dry and colorless. What works is what you had before but now updated. You need lovely music at the intro with photos of your farm and all that it includes. Then field trips we can view also walks on your property to the garden for baking. Looking at all of the beauty they you now have on the farm is a break from simply watching you at the stove. It isn't as interesting as the old format. I may stop watching. Just hearing an inspirational intro song use to make me get up and do something. At the very least it put me in a wonderful mood for the day.

Hi Martha! The chocolate cake looks great even without the icing. I hope you come back to visit Canada Blooms in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We loved you here and you had a full house of course. You all loved your pretty mud boots, too. I hear you are coming to speak in Toronto this spring (2011). Great! Here's a pic of your boots from last year. http://bit.ly/cSX6YP

I heard you being mentioned on the "baby bullet" train from San Jose to San Francisco by the young men of Silicon Valley. They were discussing your deep legacy. One item was that you invented a paper of parchment on one side and aluminum foil on the other. Since I was eaves dropping, I wonder if this is really in the works?
Thank you

Howdy, Martha! I love and appreciate your new baking show! Thank you to you and your team for creating a superb learning experience for us. Yesterday was my birthday and my husband gave me the I-Pad I am sending this message with. Wow! So far, I have downloaded your January issue...brilliantly beautiful. Michael said that you were significant in his decision. Plus, he knows how important a teacher you have been for me. It is a lovely day here on the bay. I hope you and the pups are able to hike or ride the trails this weekend!

Dear Martha,
I really do LOVE watching "Martha Bakes". Just like everyone else who commented, I also miss the format of your original show. Your unique style of informing and teaching, one on one, is a program that I hope you will bring back. Watching your original show always made me feel like as if I was right there with you and had received a personal invitation to visit with you in your lovely home. I enjoyed how you occasionally had a guest sitting with you in YOUR living room to discuss a book or other informative topic. Watching your original show evoked a style of living that I wanted to emulate and achieve even if only to a small degree. Martha, I love Martha Bakes. It reminds me of the shows from Turkey Hill I loved so much. Would love to see more of Martha At Home too. After divorce, you restored my interest in my home and entertaining. For sometime, I have wanted to thank you for that. You are the best!

"Martha Bakes"...best thing happening on the cooking shows today. I LOVE IT and am SO glad you are making available this great instructional program to us. You are such a delight to listen to as well as watch in the kitchen and the world of baking. I always loved your format, just you and your viewers, an occasional guest (loved when your mom was on) and I have been a fan from the beginning and have learned so much. I have to tell you, some days you have been the only bright spot with your wonderful programs and personality, and now "MARTHA BAKES" It's too too cool ! Thanks Martha. Your great, and continue to inspire us to get back into that kitchen and create. Everything you bake ALWAYS looks sooo beautiful.and we love your detailed instructions on how to do things...thanks so much

I love you in this style of programming. I like the style of the one on one teaching and entertaining. You provide so many creative ideas and useful information in your shows and on your web site. Many thanks for all that you do. Wanda from Texas.

I too enjoy your Baking show & loved the old format of producing your shows as well. Guess I always felt you weren't rushed & you always explained things so well. I have admired you & you have taught me so much throughout the years. Thank you for all your hard work & willingness to share with all of us every day.

I love, love, love the new show Martha Bakes. I'm hoping that will be a cookbook. Or an AP with video. I just got the pies and tarts book and I carry it with me everywhere to read. Thank you!

I agree with Martha that most of the cooking shows on tv do not really teach anything. I LOVE Martha bakes! The instruction are so thourough! I loved the lesson on the different types of chocolate, I didn't even know there was a difference between natural and dutch-processed. I thought all chocolate came from Belgium!

Love, love, love Martha Bakes! Where is your rolling pin from? Trying to find one just like it.

I made a Pavlova and "iced" it with whipping cream, topped that with sliced bananas, crushed English Toffee Bars (Heath) and chocolate sauce. It went in a flash at my church fellowship. Then I made another and topped it with lemon curd- I had all those egg yolks! and put blueberries on, frosted the edges with cool whip, and sliced strawberries. Beautiful. Those gluten free don't have to feel deprived with a Pavlova to celebrate.

I also love Martha Bakes - but unfortunately we don't get the Hallmark Channel anymore (Uverse) Ugh! I wish I can watch the shows on my computer. I also love the old Conn. home format - I have learned so much throughout the years, and have been able to share much of what I've learned with my daughter who will be getting married soon. Just bought her a new Stand alone Kitchen Aid mixer!

I love Martha Bakes. I hope she puts this series out on DVD and prints a Martha Bakes cookbook to focus on the exact topics of this show.
I love to bake, it is my favorite kitchen activity. This show is great. I love the cheesecake cupcakes.
I bought a new Kitchen Aid Professional Mixer just to bake along with this show.

I love Martha Bakes, but my husband is bugging me to remove some episodes from the DVR. Is there anyway we will be able to find these episodes on DVD or a digital format?

It looks like I'm a year behind in time. Today, 1/16/12, I saw Martha Bakes for the first time. It was the first time the art of baking pound cakes made sense to me. Thank you.

I am enjoying watching Martha Bakes on the Good Food Channel in the UK. I love the good clear instructions that help rather than sound pretentious like most shows these days. I havent seen many of the dishes before and of course the measurements are different but I am looking forward to trying many of the cakes when i get some spare time.

I had a bad experience using hot water with my spring form pan while making cheese cake. I found if I put the water on the oven rack below the cheese cake rack it still keeps it from cracking. Of course I make sure it is a little jiggly and take it out before it is too done.
