Eggs to Dye For
This past week on my regular appearance on The Today Show, I demonstrated how to create some fun, easy, and festive Easter eggs. This year, we broke tradition with pastel dyes, and experimented with neon food color and neon glitter, resulting in fabulous fluorescent gems. We also used neon colored thread to stripe brightly colored eggs. I really love how both of these techniques look. If you’d like more terrific egg dying tips, you can download our updated award-winning Eye Dying 101 app.
3 Alyson Hannigan, star of 'How I Met Your Mother', loves to craft. She is currently expecting her second child.
4 Matt Lauer stated that after working together for 15 years, I should remember that he has no crafting skills and wanted Alyson to step in for him during this segment.
6 I explained that for glittered eggs, it's best to hollow out the eggs rather than hard-boiling them. This little egg blower is a very useful tool.
7 Blowing out eggs used to be quite difficult, but this blower makes it a cinch! You can use the blown out yolks and whites for cooking. www.surmastore.com
8 Once the eggs are all cleaned out, you dye them using neon food color and egg dye to get these bold colors.
9 This drying rack is made 1/2-inch thick foam board. You draw a grid using a pencil and ruler and insert pins where the lines of the grid intersect. The eggs rest upon the pins to dry.
10 You then brush the dry dyed egg with craft glue and sprinkle it with the same color neon glitter for a very intense color. Neon glitter is from Martha Stewart Crafts at michaels.com
13 One simple way to give Easter eggs a crafty, homespun look - Add a bold stripe to dyed eggs with neon thread. Hold the loose end of a spool of thread against the egg, securing the loose end with the loops as you work - Tack periodically with Mod Podge. Tuck end and glue.
14 Ann Curry was very interested in the golden eggs, which were first dyed and then spray painted with metallic paint.
15 I explained that before spraying with the gold paint, I first covered the egg with sticky dots. When the paint dried, I peeled off the dots, revealing the original color that the egg was dyed.

Thanks for sharing! I had a question on the golden eggs. On your regular show you mention finding golden eggs during the Easter egg hunts you host and I was wondering what the prize is for finding a golden egg during your hunt.

That was a fun segment Martha! You have always had the best ideas for egg dying for Easter. I have to get the little egg blower, I first saw it when you had it on your show. I also like your idea of the foam board to hold the eggs while they are drying. We here in South Texas know all about confetti eggs. Our Fiesta is right around the corner and cracking confetti filled eggs over each others heads is a tradition! Happy Easter Martha, everyone at MSLO and all of Martha's fans!

The colors you used are beautiful and the gilded polka dot eggs are gorgeous! I got a big kick out of you tossing the confetti filled eggs to Matt-what fun that was! I love all of the different colors you used! These photos are sure fun to enjoy again and again and thanks for the video! Hope you have another great day today and a fantastic time on Easter Sunday with Alexis, Jude, Truman and others there for the Easter egg hunts, etc.!!!!! Happy Easter to ALL! Jan
