I Hosted A Cooking Demo For Macy's American Icon Campaign
To help kick-off Macy's American Icon campaign, I hosted a cooking demo for the perfect picnic and a book signing at the iconic Macy's at Herald Square in New York City on Friday, May 17th. Macy's American Icon campaign is a nationwide celebration of America; a salute to the people, places, and things we all love - from hot dogs and Hollywood to denim jeans and legendary designers and brands - all that inspire our dreams, fuel our passions, and make us proud to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
My cooking demo included recipes from Martha's American Food, a book that focuses on farm-to-table/regionally inspired recipes. Sarah Carey - VP, Editor in Chief, Every Day Food - joined me in hosting the event. By the way, Sarah has a great daily recipe video that serves up easy weeknight meal ideas. You can sign up for her videos to come straight to your email by clicking here. We demonstrated how to make Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Classic Potato Salad, Creamy Coleslaw, Sour Cherry Lemonade, and Strawberry Shortcake. Two hundred guests joined us to help kick off this great Macy's initiative. After the demonstration, I signed American Food books for guests who purchased $50 worth of Martha Stewart Collection product at Macy's. You can check out all of my products at Macy's.
Here I am with Sarah Carey at the Macy's event.
Sarah and I had so much fun sharing recipes from my book, Martha's American Food - A celebration of our nation's most treasured dishes from coast to coast.
It was a full house, and the audience was most attentive.
We first demonstrated the art of making delicious Buttermilk Fried Chicken, which is among the most emblematic foods of the South.
Sarah gave the audience some great tips. The crowning glory of fried chicken is its crisp, subtly spiced crust, and this recipe, which calls for the meat to be simply dredged in seasoned flour before pan-frying, will not disappoint.
We had such a good time making these recipes together. Buttermilk makes the chicken incomparably moist, so don't skip the important step of marinating (preferably overnight).
Here we are making the Classic Potato Salad, an all-American recipe. It's made with russet potatoes and hard boiled eggs and has a tangy mayonnaise dressing.
This Classic Potato Salad is perfect for picnics. If kept chilled, it travels well, and looks and tastes great some hours after it's prepared.
I love interacting with audiences. The next recipe was Creamy Coleslaw, another great picnic food.
The Creamy Coleslaw contains shredded green cabbage and carrot matchsticks all tossed with a sour cream/mayonnaise dressing, made tangy with the addition of Dijon mustard, cider vinegar, and fresh lemon juice.
Our set was styled with many great items from the Martha Stewart Collection available at Macy's. My line has so many beautiful products for the home.
The next recipe we demoed was for Sour Cherry Lemonade because lemonade and summer are made for one another. This can be made with fresh or frozen sour cherries.
Squeezing citrus is a breeze with a citrus press from the Martha Stewart Collection. You can easily adjust to different sizes of citrus fruits to effectively squeeze out refreshing juice without any seeds or pulp.
Here I am using a cherry pitter. This is an excellent tool for easy removal of pits from cherries and even olives.
This lemonade is made even more refreshing with the addition of fizzy club soda.
Sample plates of what we made were assembled for all the attendees.
The audience really enjoyed the food.
The Sour Cherry Lemonade was also a hit!
For dessert, we assembled and served Strawberry Shortcake, which is often cited as the single most popular dessert across the country. A combination of sugared fresh fruit, sweet biscuit, and whipped cream - Yum!!!
Afterwards, audience members were able to shop for our great Martha Stewart Collection products right in the event space.
The audience seemed thrilled with our collection and the citrus presses were a big hit!
All attendees went home with the June issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine, which contains 56 of the ultimate fresh and simple summer recipes.
Audience members who purchased $50 or more from the Martha Stewart Collection were entitled to a copy of Martha's American Food book, signed by me on the spot.
I really enjoy taking to and interacting with my fans.
Martha's American Food is simple and delicious, robust and satisfying, and genuinely heartwarming. These all-American dishes will make you happy and remind you of who you are.
