On Thursday, June 19th, I flew from New York City to Salt Lake City, Utah and took some amazing photos as we approached at 10:30 AM.
The colors of the geography were gorgeous!
Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Utah.
The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, Isaac Morley, George Washington Bradley, and several other Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley.
Although Salt Lake City is still home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church or, informally, the Mormon Church), less than half the population of Salt Lake City proper are members of the LDS Church today.
The city was nicknamed the Crossroads of the West with the economic growth brought on by immigration of international LDS members, mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad.
In 1913, the city was traversed by the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway. Today, two major cross-country freeways intersect in the city.
For the past two summers, we hosted the Alt Conference at my company headquarters in the Starrett Lehigh building in New York City.
I was thrilled when I was asked to be the keynote speaker at Alt Summer in Salt Lake City.
The Alt Summit is a creative workshop event for business owners, bloggers, and creative types hosted in Salt Lake City.
Alt Summit was founded by sisters Sara Urquhart and Gabrielle Blair, who understood that bloggers and creatives needed the connections a live event would offer.
They felt that an organized live event to discuss what is new, what is working, what is not, and what is next was absolutely needed.
This popular event is attended by bloggers from the US and around the world. Alt has grown to be the premier business conference for pioneering and rookie bloggers and creatives in this space.
Here I am at The Grand America, where the Alt Summit was held, with Gabrielle Blair and Sara Urquhart, sisters and co-founders of Alt Summit. Gabrielle graciously interviewed me onstage.
This is Kate Bittman, Director of Communications, MSLO.
Here I am with some of the Grand America Hotel team, which hails from all over. There were a bunch of native Utah folks, as well as one from Peru, and many from Mexico.
Posing with Kate Bittman, Gabrielle Blair, and Alt photographer Justin Hackworth right before going on stage at the Grand America Hotel.
Seconds later, Justin Hackworth shot this wonderful portrait of me just before entering the Imperial Ballroom to take the stage for my keynote. http://justinhackworth.com/
Gabrielle interviewed me before of a crowd of about 450 bloggers and entrepreneurs.
Gabrielle asked me many great questions. I explained how important it is for me to learn something new every day and how I strive to impart that on my blog by developing new content on a daily basis.
Photos of me and images from my magazines were displayed throughout the Q&A.
A view from the audience - I offered some of my views about raising creative children - prompt children towards experiences that will nourish their minds and creative spirits, rather than simply occupying their time.
We are very proud of our American Made Awards, which recognize ingenuity and excellence in the fields of crafts, design, food, and style. We are looking forward to this year's event. http://www.marthastewart.com/americanmade
There were many good questions from the audience - so many, in fact, that unfortunately, we had to cut it short after a point.
Each audience member received a copy of the June Martha Stewart Living with their luncheon menu.
We received a standing ovation!
I snapped a photo of the enthusiastic crowd.
A nice portrait of me and Gabrielle
Here I am with Raphael Aquino-Jose, from the Communications team at Bing, a longtime sponsor of Alt. Raphael designed this incredible flower wall, which was a part of the Bing Lounge at Alt.
