Yesterday, I had four of our summer interns help clean and organize my home craft room. Here they are before they started this big project: Rebecca Alger, Casey Brady, Ren Robinson and Nicole Polemeni-Hegarty.
This is my craft room. It looked pretty tidy, but was a lot to do to get it in tip top order.
There were many things piled up in the room - craft supplies and miscellaneous items that had accumulated over several years.
I even had chairs in my craft room that didn't belong in there.
Piles of albums were just lying on the floor.
Our director of video design, Anduin Havens, also came up to oversee the project - she knows how I like things kept and organized.
I wanted all the bins emptied, and all the supplies put away, so everything could be found and accessed more easily.
Before I left for my New York office, I went up to see how the group was doing. Anduin came across a photo taken of my farm when I first purchased it.
Once the team got started, all the drawers were opened, so that everything could be seen, and moved if necessary.
Casey was assigned to clean up the sewing supplies.
Ren got all my notebooks in order.
I have dozens of notebooks where I've jotted down ideas, inspirations, and information through the years - Ren organized and labeled them, and then found an appropriate spot to store them.
All my electronic gadgets needed a better storage place, so they weren't out on the desk.
The group started putting things away first, and then they assessed what needed to be moved.
Sewing supplies were returned to their proper drawers.
I went over where some of the things should go, and how they should be arranged, but mostly, I wanted things put away in an organized fashion.
My sewing stations needed to be cleared, so there was ample room for the sewing machines.
All the threads needed to be re-organized according to color.
I have so many ribbons - wide satin ribbons, Martha Stewart Crafts ribbons, seam binding, etc. They would be better stored in my wrapping room rather than in my craft room.
There were all sorts of printer cartridges that belonged to old printers I no longer use - this pile went to recycling.
Anduin made sure she knew what was in every drawer and every bin, so everything could be put away properly. The back of this room was mostly for sewing projects, but there wasn't much room for any sewing.
Anduin organized one of my drawers dedicated to all kinds of sewing scissors. Always keep your scissors and their functions separated - sewing scissors only for fabrics, paper scissors only for paper.
The interns were each assigned a certain set of drawers or containers to work on.
Nicole made sure every issue of my magazines was present and in chronological order.
Nicole also re-labeled all the magazine holders.
Rebecca helped organize all the storage boxes.
There were containers of glitter found in a couple of different places. They were all relocated and stored in one place.
By midday, there were lots of bags ready for recycling.
Anduin and the team of interns got a lot done - you will love the "after pictures" tomorrow.
I love my craft room - I can't wait until it is all organized again.
