Our interns have a crash course in glittering
This year, at MSLO, we have 51 summer interns across 33 departments. Our interns come from all over the country and even from places as far away as Korea! This summer, I have had the pleasure of having two of those interns work with me -  Emily, a student at Syracuse University, and Christina, a student at the University of Scranton. They have been busy doing a variety of projects in our Bedford offices, as well as attending intern events at our offices in New York City. I recently asked them to report on one of these events.
As you know, we are really into glitter and our summer interns were taught how to glitter various designs on everything from shirts and aprons, to canvas bags and coin purses. The course was conducted by Hannah Milman, Executive Editorial Director of Crafts and Holiday. This is the very same project that is being demonstrated at Beaches resorts.  It was a fun experience for our interns and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The trainees were pleased with their final products – they turned once simple shirts and other ordinary items into works of art! The glitter adds beautiful sparkle to almost anything. Please enjoy these photos taken by my intern, Emily.
2 The first step is to make stencils using the Craft Punches. The stencils are created out of freezer paper.
4 Here, Hannah is demonstrating what the stencil should look like. Using the Craft Punch she put a star-shaped punch through the freezer paper. She then cut around the punch creating a small square. Once the stencil is cut, you can place it on the item to be decorated.
6 This is the freezer paper and small sponges that are used to dab glue on the item being decorated. The glue should cover the surface area inside the stencil.
7 Here are all the supplies needed - Craft Punches, glue, freezer paper, a sponge, and of course, glitter.
10 Molly, a Cornell University graduate and Events Intern, Melanie, a student at Cornell University and Digital Editorial Intern, and Laura, a student at the University of Michigan and Editorial Intern for MSL Magazine, begin making their stencils.
11 Here, Francesca who attends Georgetown University and is a Corporate IT Intern, is placing cupcake stencils on her apron.
12 Product Design Interns, Jeni, a student at Pratt and Rebecca, a student at RISD begin glittering their canvas satchels.
13 Here, Carrie, an Intern in the International department and student at Ohio State University, is cutting out an anchor stencil.
14 Retail Marketing Intern and student at the University of Pennsylvania, Courtney, made stencils using the crab Punch.
15 Once the stencils are made, the next step is ironing them onto the item being glittered. The freezer paper should be placed shiny side down. Hannah helped Abby, a Book and Special Projects Editorial Intern and student at Trinity College, iron whale stencils onto her shirt.
16 After ironing the stencils, Amy, a student at the University of Maryland and Consumer Marketing Intern, added gold glitter to her shirt.
17 Angelica just peeled off the stencils. The glittered butterfly, apple, and sun came out perfect! Angelica attends the University of California at San Diego and is a Finance Intern.
19 Abby with her finished shirt. She created a pattern using the different colors of glitter. The whales look great!
21 Art Intern for MSL Magazine and student at RISD, Melissa, proudly showed off her canvas bag with glitter ice cream cones.
23 Hannah with Francesca, Allison, Rachel, Ann, Jeni, Anna, and Rachel. The Interns were delighted with the end result.

Who can blame them getting excited at Martha Stewart glitter? I have never seen glitter in so many unusual, bright and interesting shades of colour.

All that glittering looks like fun. I know they had a good time.
I didn't realize you had so many different interns.

I would like dress with glitters because it does not only gives emphasis on the dress but also the one who wear it..

Smokes, do the interns have to look like models? I'm in college and will want to do an internship further on in my studies. Any chance you'll take a "short, fat, middle-aged woman who cooks"? (My coworkers always wanted me to get a cooking show on TV and that was my title.)
I'm currently unemployed and crafting, sewing, etc all the time. I love it. Unfortunate for me, the hours of unemployment are wonderful but the pay sucks.

Hi Martha,
What a rewarding opportunity for these young people to intern in your offices. It must be like a dream come true for them! I just watched you on HSN and even though I love all of your craft items, I purchased the Crafty Scissors Kit for now. I was intrigued with those fringing scissors! I have quite a bit of your glitter & craft decorating tapes already and although I don't do any cake decorating, that Cricut Cake machine is so nice for those who do. It makes fantastic decorations! I might get on HSN site and order one of those punch sets since you mentioned cutting out a border for a wall. I want to do something like that for my white bookcases. Thanks to you and MSLO for all your great ideas! Trish

Hi Martha, Love seeing Hannah, again. She sure did her usual great job of crafting and teaching all of these young interns how to craft. Emily did a great job of photographing this project. Sure hope all of these interns were able to see you and Alex present so many of your craft items on HSN last night and today. They would have learned even more. How lucky they all are to be interns for MSLO. I watched you and Alex on HSN for 2 hours last night and 2 more hours so far today and will watch again later today. I was totally awed and overwhelmed at all of the fantastic craft items that you presented on HSN. I would love to order every item and give them to my young niece who has really gotten into crafting since I gave her your craft encyclopedia book. How great that so many people ordered items during each episode on HSN. I think I will go back to hsn.com and order all that I can afford for my niece later today. Once again, love your blog and your presence on HSN. Love, Jan

WHAT FUN!
Martha, how can you get so much done? Arts and crafts are not my forte but I love demonstrations such as these on glitter.Interns are all beautiful people so thank you for having them there this summer. I never have seen HSN but might watch it once, but know that will never compare with joy of Tag sales.

How nice to see this summer's interns. I hope they are all having a good time. Are they required to wear black? Why do they have to stand while doing this activity? Sitting is more in the congenial spirit of decorative crafts, though I imagine they weren't given hours and hours to work on this. Rather a perfunctory job for those who are going to or attended arts and design schools. Funny to see Hannah Millman give a benediction over the project at the beginning.
Does freezer paper adhere to fabric simply by ironing the shiny side down? What a discovery!
What glue was used that makes the cloth items washable? What glue is used on glass that won't peel off?

What a fabulous day in the life of a "ms" intern. How I would love to work for your company. I am relocating to nyc in two weeks, and love all things Martha. You have a fabulous and inspiring company. As a graduate in architecture, I am always encouraged in creative ways when I visit your blog and site. Have a blessed day.
Best! Julie

Let's all get heavy into using products that do not "off-gas". I know Martha likes to use products that are good for all living things and the environment. Thanks Martha.
