Here I am with my new kittens, a silver tabby Persian and a cameo white Persian.
These kittens were delivered by Pam Rutan of Top Shelf Persians.
Pam has loved animals all her life and is especially passionate about Persian cats.
I'm calling this adorable one, Ch'in, after Emperor Ch'in, who ruled China in 221 BC and for whom China gets its name.
And this sweet boy is called Kublai Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, who became the Mongolian emperor in 1260.
Introducing the kittens to another emperor in the house, Ghenghis Khan, my beautiful Chow Chow
During the day, Pam works in construction. She devotes her evenings and weekends to her cats, grooming and showing.
I first became aware of Pam when my friend, Grace Coddington, the Creative Director of Vogue, used some of her cats in a photo shoot for the magazine. I really wanted her cats.
Ryan, my gardener, couldn't resist petting these fluff balls, as he was decorating the house with plants for that evening's dinner party.
As with all my new pets, I gently bit each kitten on the face. This is how I let my animals know that I am now their mother.
This is Empress Tang, a dominant calico Persian. She and her sister, Princess Peony, have the same mother as these new kittens.
Dominant calico Persians are signified by being at least three different colors.
Calico cats are almost always female, as the color trait is linked to the X chromosome. There have been few cases of male calicos, but they have all been sterile, a result of carrying two X chromosomes.
Persians are characterized by their large round eyes, rounded ears, short muzzle, large head, short legs, and long and thick coat.
Most Persians have copper-colored eyes, but in some colorings, the eyes can be blue or green.
There are some short-haired varieties of Persians, but they all carry the longhair trait, so there is a chance that their offspring may be long-haired.
Persians are the most popular of pedigree cats in the United States. Many people desire them for pets not only for their looks, but also because of their calm and unpretentious nature.
My housekeeper, Laura Acuna, loved the new kittens immediately!
What a precious little face!
There's nothing like a new kitten, except for two new kittens!
All of my cats are most curious about the canaries.
So I arranged for a meet and greet.
I took the kitties down to the basement where there are several litter boxes and Kublai Khan found one and used it right away.
He then paused to take in his surroundings. He seemed to be very comfortable here, which is a good thing since this is the pet grooming area of the laundry room.
I then took the pair to the third floor craft room, which is a favorite spot for cats. Kublai Khan decided it was time for a drink of water. By the way, these great dishes and the silicone mat beneath are from the Martha Stewart Pet Line at PetSmart.
Ch'in was thirsty, too.
Kublai Khan found more accommodations.
Pam nearly cried saying goodbye to these darling babies.
